Again, strong lyrics in this. But the video is so good I couldn't pass it up.

SGP is a part of the current wave of mixtape rappers (see also: Lil Ugly Mane, Gorgeous Children) bringing back the mid-90s Memphis sound. His mixtapes are full of pops, hiss, and really poor mastering. He was signed to 4AD last year and brought out Mysterious Phonnk, which was a collection of his best mixtape tracks re-done with far, far better production values. This session has Purrp in a mic'd up room performing three tracks: "Mystikal Maze," "Get Yah Head Bust," and "Don't Give a Damn." The songs and visuals are both on point.
Well, I messed up rating this. I thought "Get Yah Head Bust" and "Don't Give a Damn" were after the jump, so I rated on just "Mystikal Maze". "MM" didn't grab me at all, so I stopped listening to it before it went into the 2nd and 3rd tracks. The second and third tracks bump it up to 5, maybe 6 stars.
Overall, I was a little underwhelmed. I would have liked to see a bit more complexity in both the beats and the rhymes.
The beats definitely lose something in the way they were reworked for this release. They were way more dense on the mixtapes, but I cannot emphasize enough how poorly they were mastered. Lyrically, he's mediocre at best, really poor at worst. His music ends up greater than the sum of its parts. I've listened to Mysterious Phonk quite a few times, but the times it worked for me the best was driving down desolate highway in the dark North Dakota night.
