An assistant manager had the decency to approach a couple of us yesterday and admit that the general manager's tactic at this point is to do absolutely no promotions from within. I'd sort of gotten the hint, but it's clear now. This interview today means essentially nothing.

After three consecutive seasons out of the playoffs (in which they underperformed their Pythag by a combined 21 games!), the Minnesota Empire Builders were back in in 1978 and won in the bottom of the ninth of game 7 of the League Championship Series last night to advance to the World Series. Bert threw a 142-pitch complete game in game seven, and the winning run was scored with two outs in the bottom of the ninth (a bases loaded walk to Richie Hebner).

    My top two second basemen (Davey Lopes and Mitsui Motoi) are both injured for the World Series against the Denver Rams who will be led by ace Steve Carlton.

    1. What was the final score of Game 7?
      Bert's 142-pitch CG in a game 7 has to get him into the HOF earlier, right?

        1. No, Morris is no longer a Twins announcer (he just signed with the Blue Jays' radio & TV), so that would be completely off.

          1. Bert throws 142 pitches on the 19th and today (the 21st) he's listed as "Rested". Looks like he had a slightly rougher start to his career, but seems ready to pitch 270+ innings through 1982.

            1. I'm thinking (hoping) that Rogers will start game 1 with Bert getting game 2. I yanked John Denny from the rotation in favor of Phil Niekro for game 3.

  2. All you can do is make the best of the situation. Go in and try to kill it. Really, you have nothing to lose at that point.

    If it doesn't work out, maybe I buy you a beer this weekend. I will be in Phoenix but I don't know what my schedule looks like.

    2. I work both Saturday and Sunday, but Saturday's just a morning meeting that ends around 10:30. I think I close Sunday. If Saturday works for you, it sure works for me.

      1. I will let you know. I will be helping my parents with things. I don't know if that is an all weekend commitment or not.

  4. not to trend close to the forbidden zone, but I find it odd that both my State Senator and House rep are not on Twitter and only my House rep is on the Book of Face.

      1. Funny. I was just there yesterday to get my name off a Representative's mailing list. Rec'd his legislative update e-mail and thought, "I don't recognize this guy. *takes closer look* Rep. X from 10B? Huh. I don't live in 10B...do I?"

        2. I just emailed my state senator yesterday. Once they start discussing laws that affect my beer purchasing, I let them know what I think.

                I assume the people against this are one subset of liquor stores and the WCTU.

                    2. We usually sit up front, so we gotta sip. Don't want to be accused of Bogartin' it for the rest of the faithful.

                      But I'm not as gifted with speaking and persuasion as you lawyer-folk, and I prefer not to rock the boat until the bottle-shop opens.

  6. Looks like the Twins Links on the homepage could use some updating (the Geek and Seth still to their old sites rather than Twins Daily, for example). I admit that I rarely go reading any other sites for Twins news, so I don't have any to suggest.

  8. I don't want this to head in the direction of the Forbidden Zone, but is anyone else watching the Netflix reboot of House of Cards? I've watched through Chapter Four and am thoroughly hooked.

    1. Haven't seen it yet, but I'm a fan of both the genre and Spacey/Wright so I'll definitely check it out.

    3. Rather than watching the Super Bowl I spent all of my Sunday night burning though House of Cards. Just finished up. It is well worth any citizens time.

      1. UPDATE: General manager Terry Ryan revealed that Swarzak suffered the injury “playing around and wrestling” while in town for Twins Fest last week.

        That's code for freaky sex stuff, right?
