    1. On weekends, I tend to blow past the reasonable quantity because I've got a whole pot and no one to share with.

Last weekend, I went to make a pot and the damn thing smelled like vanilla. My sister-in-law lives here during the week and was making vanilla flavored coffee. Had to run vinegar through the thing to get that out. I need to get a new French press for myself one of these days.

      1. I'm the opposite- I go through one or two pots per day while I'm at work, but I rarely make coffee while I'm home, since no one else there drinks it.
I'm also thinking about getting a French press. It's gotten enough rave reviews here that it's on my short list of Christmas/birthday presents that I'm asking for.

          1. Buffalo, would that work for cold brewing?

I cold-brew in my french press. As I only drink one mug per morning (and the Mrs prefers crappy, hot coffee from the drip machine), my 48-oz carafe lasts me several days. (I heat in the microwave by the cup)

              1. that shows using hot water, then icing it down. I'm talking about long steeping times with cold water, a la the Toddy system.

                1. Use the same preparation method, sub out cold water, refrigerate overnight, voila.

        1. I believe if you go through one or two pots in a day, you don't anyone to drink coffee with you.

    1. Part of my weight loss was cutting back on fruit juice (not eliminating it, but cutting back on it) and eating more fresh fruit instead.

  1. Did we already address this with a discussion about the most popular pr0n names? "Spooky" is only the 4th most-common name. Huh.

    1. so the Yankee get the Evil Empire copyright because they used the copyrighted song 'Imperial March' after the nickname was given to them.
      cool.

  2. When the Wolves are firing on all cylinders it really makes me miss Kevin Love.

  3. after that tech to Jarret Jack, the Wolves limped to halftime
    just like the FSN predicted.
    sigh

  4. Some good stuff from today from LEN3. Some highlights:

I've never seen Daniel Santana before this camp. I immediately took a liking to him. He was signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2007. He batted .286 last year at Class A Fort Myers with eight homers, 60 RBI and 17 steals. He's one of the most athletic middle infielders I've seen since covering the Twins. Hope he figures it out and becomes a prospect. ``He's a bag full of skills,'' GM Terry Ryan said. ``He's got all kinds of ability and athleticism. It's just a matter of consistency.''

Kyle Gibson threw a pitch in the fourth inning that registered 96 miles an hour on the stadium radar gun. Say what? I checked wtih a scout in the stands, and Gibson topped out at 95. That's pretty darn good for a first outing. Gibson has to fine tune his command in future outings, but if he's feeling good enough to let it loose like that, wow.

  5. Dwill made some sort of crazy circus shot
he cut tot he basket and it looked like a reverse jam, but I think he really threw the ball up and it went in.
    I hope someone gif'd that

  6. listen to the crowd. they are going nuts.
look at the crowd and everyone is sitting on their hands.
    nice

  7. Gardenhire raved afterward about four young starters who worked a combined eight innings between the camp game and the main event: Kyle Gibson, Alex Meyer, Trevor May and J.O. Berrios. "Fun to watch," Gardenhire said.

  8. Jon Krawczynski ‏@APkrawczynski
Ricky Rubio has 23 steals in the last 5 games. Most in a 5-gm span for Wolves since Ty Corbin in 1990. He'd trade those for wins, though

    Ty Corbin!

      1. I came home from curling to see Peter Griffin as a teddy bear and the corpse of Ann Hathaway. You may be right.

  9. Ok, I'm hoping for a little bit of informal advice from a Citizen or two.

I'm trying to sort out my tax return with respect to allowable educational credits/deductions for the Boy.

We paid all but $1k of his fall and winter bills out of a 529 account that he owns -- a rollover from a UGMA account. He turned 18 after the fall bill was paid, and before the winter bill. I'm claiming him as a dependent on our taxes, but that money was owned by him and spent on him, so it really should not count towards our calculations for the American Opportunity Tax Credit or Lifetime Learning Tax Credit, right?

So, does the AOTC just get lost? He's a dependent with very little income (not required to file). Or do I get to claim the educational expenses? I'm soooo confused.

    1. Ask Mr. Quicken, like I do.

I think regarding education spending, even though your dependent may file for himself/herself, you should still have all of the 529 & education expenses on your taxes.

      1. If you mean ask the "Turbotax community," Ya, I've asked. Hoping someone will answer credibly right quick. Gotta get FAFSA done, which required getting the taxes done. This is my sticking point on finishing the taxes, and it means a couple of G's difference in my refund, depending on the answer.

        1. aaand here's part of my answer, from IRS Publication 970:

Qualified education expenses paid by a dependent for whom you claim an exemption, or by a third party for that dependent, are considered
          paid by you.

so, distributions from his 529 used to pay his "qualified education expenses" are considered paid by me.

          but then:

An American opportunity or lifetime learning credit (edu-cation credit) can be claimed in the same year the beneficiary takes a tax-free distribution from a QTP, as long as the same expenses are not used for both benefits. This means that after the beneficiary reduces qualified education expenses by tax-free educational assistance, he or she must further reduce them by the expenses taken into account in determining the credit.

          ahh, shit. I'm still confused.

            1. pretty much.

So, I've re-read the TT instructions about a dozen times now. My conclusion is that I have a three-step plan:

Step 1. Send kid to college and pay for it in various and sundry ways
Step 2. Read Turbotax instructions a dozen or more times
              Step 3. ...
              Step 4. PROFIT!

                1. In my case, I've almost convinced myself that it does. Remember, I am making the transition from "no kids in college" to "one kid at a fancy-pants college" during tax year 2012.

Because I rolled over a UGMA to a custodial 529 account last year (and the UGMA was in zero-coupon bonds to begin with), the basis of the 529 ended up being pretty close to its face value. That is, my withdrawals for the Boy during 2012 were almost all principal, not earnings. As I read the instructions, only earnings in excess of adjusted, qualified educational expenditures are problematic. But my AQEE were large and the earnings were small. Hence, lots of AQEE to apply to the tax credit. Profit!

So, don't burst my bubble (unless you really do see a fundamental flaw, in which case save me from the slammer!)
