March 4, 2013: Unfortunate Start

My mom and stepdad got here yesterday for a month-long stay (my stepdad got a contract to build some houses down here) and last night one single customer kept me at work for six extra hours and took away my first day with them. Well...money, I guess.

  1. I am supposed to go to the Wolves game tonight with the first grade basketball team. We are supposed to get 10" of snow.

  2. Bob Collins posted my good friend Carl's latest Boundary Waters video on NewsCut today. (That New Years 2011 video was at my parents' house and features pretty much my entire family (close-up of Sheenie dancing at the 36 second mark) except me somehow.)

  3. Making the rounds this morning: Scientists report first cure of HIV in a child.

Science Daily's report on the same.

Dr. Persaud, an amfAR grantee, detailed the case of a two-year-old child in Mississippi diagnosed with HIV at birth and immediately put on antiretroviral therapy. At 18 months, the child ceased taking antiretrovirals and was lost to follow-up. When brought back into care at 23 months, despite being off treatment for five months, the child was found to have an undetectable viral load. A battery of subsequent highly sensitive tests confirmed the absence of HIV.

  4. I've been invited to participate in a Scoresheet Root League this year, and was wondering if there was any interest in rounding out the last six teams of my AL-only league. The teams already spoken for are:

    Twins
    Orioles
    Blue Jays
    Yankees

The league fee for first-timers is $29.99, so factor that into your interest.

  5. one of the hidden bad things about having a cold is in inability to taste or smell anything

I curse the person who gave this dadgum thing to me

    1. Since my second bout with bronchitis a few years ago, I can usually only smell what's extremely close to me. It's handy on occasion, but for the most part, I miss it.

  6. I got an email (about 2 months ago, I need to check that address more regularly) from the professor I wrote my journal article with. He's got a new article he wants me to help him with. It actually sounds fun, and I think I'll give it a go.

    1. first, cheers.

second, before i got my iphone (which i can link my [many] email accounts together in one place), i had an auto-forward set up on accounts i wanted separate from personal accounts, but would rarely check. i know gmail has that functionality, but not sure about other services.

  7. the Wolves play the Heat tonight

How many points will they lose by?

    I'll set the over/under at 25.5

    and I pick 'over'

    1. despite the Heat just playing a game of alley oop (they must have about 10 of them) the Wolves are somehow only down by 7 points at the half.

But its the 3rd quarter which means the Wolves will be outscored by 30

          1. yeh unbelievable.

the Rick Adleman channeled his inner Gardenhire and got a T after that

    2. JJ Barea got ejected from the game because he was being JJ Barea

Serge Ibaka literally punched Blake Griffen in the nuts yesterday and got nothing.

      1. He probably should have received an award for punching Griffin in the nads, honestly.

I am out of town so I missed tonight's game. Sounds like the Heat got some home cooking in the Target Center. As if they need the refs to help out when they're playing a team who has like 8 healthy bodies.

        1. To further prove that point, I never get emails about the NBA because I don't ever remember requesting I be added to an emailing list. However, this morning I was greeted with an email about how awesome it is that the Heat won their 15th straight. Clearly, we are but pawns in David Stern's horrible plans.

  8. One of the great advantages to taking time off from work to recuperate from surgery: time to fill out IDOC and FAFSA!

    #killmenow
    #thesurgerywaslesspainful

      1. ugg, i had to fill them out regardless of their futility. i filed taxes independently starting at 18, received negligible assistance of any kind from my parents, and was still stuck under their money for something like 6 years. they didn't make a whole lot either, but something like 20-25% of their income was their EIC. my ass.

    1. I don't get why colleges ask for the IDOC, when the same information is in the FAFSA. I think it's all a money grab by the colleges and by the College Board.

Also, this is the 3rd year I've had to do the FAFSA and I don't find it too difficult, although to be fair, our financial picture is pretty simple with no investments outside of two IRAs.

The first year I did make the mistake of including my IRA amount on the FAFSA and a friendly college financial aid person told me I didn't have to, which got me an additional $1,500 in free $$$.

Sorry, those with younger kids, paying for college education -- it's coming.

      1. Yah, my out-off pocket for Fancy Pants College is similar to your for Big State U, rhu. But I gotta fill out the paperwork to make it happen.

I have multiple retirement accounts (three pensions, plus 401k plus 403b plus 457) that I have to locate balances on for IDOC. I guess I should be grateful for the opportunity to check my portfolio once per year.

    2. Grand Canyon University had a rep at the open house at my kids' school. She claimed that 78 percent of the students graduate debt free. I'm definitely going to check that out when the time comes.

  9. Nice outing by the Twins, particularly shutting out the Cardinals. HR by Hicks & Boggs, minimum faced by DeVries Institute, but what's with all the BB allowed, guys?! Knock it off.

    1. Pitch around a guy so the next guy can hit into a double play (Twins turned five). No problem.

  10. "You just want to stay on his fastball, try to stay away from his off-speed," Hicks said. "He threw me a change-up on the first pitch, then fastball in, fastball in." That last one? Fastball way out.

I could really get to like this guy.
