  1. Rochester lost to Norfolk 5-3 yesterday. I couldn't find out much about the game, but apparently Oswaldo Arcia and Clete Thomas each homered. Joe Mauer caught, but I don't know how he did.

    1. From LEN3:

Mike Pelfrey threw five innings in Sarasota for Class AAA Rochester. He gave up five runs on seven hits and no walks, three strikeouts and two home runs. Joe Mauer caught him and was 1-for-2. Mauer is trying to get familiar with the new members of the rotation before the e regular season starts.

    2. From PiPress. Not sure who to believe about Pelfrey:

Twins right-hander Mike Pelfrey made his next-to-last start of the spring Thursday in Sarasota. Pitching for Triple-A Rochester, with Joe Mauer behind the plate, Pelfrey went five innings and allowed

      three runs

on seven hits, including two home runs. He struck out three and walked none while throwing 72 pitches.

      1. Thanks for the updates. I can usually find stuff on the games at the Red Wings' website, but their link to yesterday's game result doesn't work.

  2. hey Doc, just saw that UP abandoned some North Milpitas industrial lead tracks so that the VTA (Vasona Transit Authority?) could work on high-speed rail there

        1. I'm getting it second hand. I'm betting it ties into BART, so a BART extension makes sense. Unless it's the north end of a high-speed line that will make connections to BART? Who knows.

  3. went to The Sample Room last night in Minneapolis. The pig confit is to die for. Nice to go to a place that isn't expensive, has high quality food, and fills you up without gorging you

    1. I was there a couple years ago and definitely enjoyed it, though I'm rather more on the vegetarian end of the spectrum. There's a nice atmosphere there too.

Tomorrow night I'm going to Victor's 1959 Cafe; I've been waiting for a while to check it out.

      1. Victor's is amazing, but I've never been there for a meal other than brunch. Budget your time because you will likely have a decent wait before getting a table.

          1. Love Victor's. If you decide to go off the vegetarian wagon for a night, consider the ropa vieja. I didn't think I'd like plantains, but the sweetness combined with the spicy meat is incredible. Also, tiny may be a bit of an understatement. I've heard that Tony O. dines there on a semi-regular basis, too.

  4. The Twins trimmed their camp roster some more by optioning outfielder Joe Benson and lefthander Pedro Hernandez to Class AAA Rochester and reassigning righthander Luis Perdomo to the minor league camp.

I think this means Hicks makes the team, and I can't imagine they would bring him up unless they planned to start him.

    1. We had a limited discussion about The Roots here a few weeks back. My experience of this is what first led me to this. Sad to lose his voice.

      1. That's all I've read, too, back in college. I think I'll seek out some of his essays now, though.

        1. I'd read that and an essay or two. If I remember correctly, my general takeaway was that it seemed like he was giving voice to stuff that should probably be said, but that I was never quite convinced.

      2. I believe I've also read No Longer at Ease, that and TFA were texts for a non-Western-civ history course in college.

    1. Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this son of York even fucking longer by a stubborn northern jet stream.

  5. Hey fellow gaming nerds, this is kind of exciting:

  6. Via Tom Ricks, today I learned:

Another interesting moment came in February 1944, when Churchill mistakenly had the songwriter Irving Berlin to dinner, believing he had invited the philosopher and diplomat Isaiah Berlin. He kept pestering poor Irving with questions about his thinking about when the war might end.

Oh, to be inside Berlin's head during that meal.

      1. I hadn't realized they'd extended the pay wall that far (I'm an FP subscriber). You got the meat of the Berlin thing in the blockquote; the only other interesting tidbit was that Berlin told Churchill he thought FDR would run for and win a fourth term.

            1. I can see FP stuff fine when it comes from a Book of Face link. This link, however, took me to a sign-in page.

      1. I'd be okay with this.

Though I'm not sure how I'd feel about paying him whatever silly amount his FA contract will be worth.

      1. With all the Yankees' injury issues, I was thinking this could be the year that the Twins win the season series against them. Then I thought about our starting rotation and did an epic facepalm.

  7. Bizarro baseball today. Yankees take a 2-0 lead on a sac fly and an infield out. Twins tie it on back-to-back bombs by Morneau and Doumit. Twins add another to make it 3-2.

  8. My daughter has a Justin Bieber notebook. I just asked her who's cooler Bieber or Mick Jagger.

    Miss SBG: Mick Jagger
    SBG: Why?
    Miss SBG: Rock and Roll
