April 8, 2013: A Store Divided

I shaved my head about a week ago. I had no idea how strong the reactions would be, both positive and negative. I suppose it's nice to know that people care.

  1. I'm in Sioux Falls until Wednesday for three days of pastors' meetings. 1) Yes, that's every bit as exciting as it sounds; and 2) the way the forecast sounds, I may be here until Thursday or Friday.

    1. If April showers bring May flowers, and Mayflowers bring pilgrims, what do April snowstorms bring?

      1. I can probably get through the temporary return of winter with a minimum of grumbling, but at this point my winter jacket only barely zips over my growing belly, so that may be a bit of an issue...

                1. Actually, I've been around almost two months. But . . . what? Beau's got something going on with my husband?

                    1. I believe poco de pimienta will be making his appearance late Juneish. Feel free to come up with equally great nicknames for the husband and the toddler, by the way!

        1. I thought I was maybe the only one that missed any discussion on this, but I see not. Anyhow- congratulations!

        2. As Pepper started hanging around while I was on hiatus and I'm not a CdL regular, I just now realized she's a she. And all this time I've been eschewing pants. Apologies (and congrats)

          1. Thank you! Given the amount of time my toddler son spent pants-less during potty training last summer, I'm not sure you really need to make the effort on my behalf. But perhaps there is a case to be made for reviving BKaC. (Actually, I would sort of like to see one for everyone here.)

              1. That was partially my bad, as sean mentioned it, but I was taking a break and I never really got back to him on that. We really should reboot the whole thing, perhaps along with a podcast portion?

                1. I've called out a couple of times for people to be interviewed, and nobody has answered the call any of the times.

So, I'll do it again: I'm available all day, people. Well, I actually have a different podcast to do tonight, but that's not for five hours.

  2. I walked into spoons's company's Richfield store on Saturday for the first time in a couple of years. It might as well have been an entirely different company based on its appearance in contrast to my last visit. Very disorienting (but sleek!) and, for someone like me who had not visited in a long time, confusing to navigate.

    1. As many times as I've been to corporate, I've never been in that store, which is the closest one to corporate. I'm not sure why.

      1. Right, I know they closed it for three months last year to remodel to make it the "BB of the future." This was my first visit since (to get that microphone), and I wandered in circles for awhile as many helpers in various uniforms (I would say only one-third of the employees were actually wearing blue), were helping other customers.

      2. I’ve never been in that store, which is the closest one to corporate. I’m not sure why.

well, unless they open a closer store or move corporate....

  3. Twins batters lead the AL in walks and are tied for first in hbps. That's a lot of free passes.

    1. I am very, very pro this trend. With the exception of this last game, Twins batters seem to be working the count better than I can remember any other Twins team in recent years.

Shift in organizational strategy? New hitting coach?

    1. my vague memories say I was watching it live (on tv) as well. But recovered memories are suspect.

    2. Long story, but my brother Larry and I watched it live in the Fort Wayne, Indiana airport bar with Bob Griese sitting at the table next to us. We both got Griese's autograph, too.

    1. The Dread Pirates' WS prediction is just the matchup. I see that's what he wrote originally, so I think we should force him to make a decision.

  4. Interesting.

Apr. 8, 2013 — In the early days of baseball more than 125 years ago, fun at the ballyard was a sure bet -- quite literally. Players, fans and perhaps even umpires gambled on every aspect of the game and that's usually how most players made any money, says a Texas A&M University professor who has written a book about the relationship between baseball and American culture.

  5. I'm totally excited to send my next kid to Reid Primary and Middle School in Springfield OH.

    a. It is the intent that all dress and grooming guidelines be equitably applied to all students district wide. The administrative team will provide guideline interpretations for students and parents as circumstances warrant due to changes in fashion trends, differing grade levels of students, etc. Student dress and appearance must meet conventional standards of dress and modesty during all school functions. Any student dress or grooming which is disruptive or distracting to the education process will not be permitted regardless of whether a specific guideline has previously been issued.
    (1) Hair styling or coloring arrangements which are disruptive or distracting are not permissible. Hair shall be worn above the eyebrows and must be kept clean, neat, and trimmed.
    (a) Length of boys hair shall not be longer than that which would extend below the bottom of a dress shirt collar and a portion of both ears must be exposed. Ponytails, rubber bands, tie-ups,etc., are not permitted.
    (b) Beards are not permitted, and moustaches are to be neatly trimmed and may not extend below the lip line nor wider than the width of the mouth.
    (c) Sideburns are to be neatly trimmed and shall not extend below the line of the mouth and shall be of reasonable width.

Umm, ok. Boy's hair that goes below the collar or covers the ears is "disruptive" by definition. And those kindergartners with full beards!

Also, do they hate Joe Mauer?

    1. And one of my fantasy pitchers was responsible for 7 of those runs. A WHIP of 18.00 is actually impressive, in a bad, bad way.

  6. Wednesday Night Snow likely. Cloudy, with a low around 27. North northeast wind around 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 7 inches possible.
Thursday Snow likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 36. Northeast wind around 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

Good thing the Twins aren't returning home until Friday.
