April 18, 2013: Riders on the Storm

Yesterday was a reprieve, but today is yet another day of rolling thunder and lightning (and hail?). We still have siding to fix from last week, and the dog is freaking out.

  1. Here's what the roads looked like this morning on my drive to work.

I think that qualifies me as a rider on the storm.

    1. April 18th and the kids are being let out of school early because of snow/dangerous icy roads
      crazy

      1. Yeah, it's been snowing quite a bit since midday. Started as rain, then sleet, and now big flakes.

    1. I don't think it was that bad. He was only about three steps from the plate when Pena caught the ball after the Tigers executed a good relay. Plus, the Mariners only get a hit once every week or so, so I think the percentages make it a little closer. Here's another issue with the stupid bullpens. Is it really that much more valuable to have a 12th man on your pitching staff than to have a player who can run faster than Justin Smoak when he's the tying run on first base with two outs in the ninth?

      1. That was the 14th, so regardless of the length of the bench, I doubt anyone would have been left to run other than a pitcher but I agree with your statement.

    1. it took me 80 minutes to go 10 miles on the highway this morning. oh, and i don't think they'll be getting a game in since one isn't scheduled.

  2. Kendrys Morales breaks up Verlander's no-hit bid with a double. OK, it was only in the first inning, but anytime a pitcher like Verlander pitches against the M's, it's always a strong possibility.

        1. "I also know it must be tough to root for the Yankees while living in Miami and Cleveland."

I'd suggest that's pretty easy no matter where you live. Don't think Cleveland or Miami would make that much harder.

          1. It's a hell of a lot easier to root for the Yankees while living in Miami and Cleveland than it is rooting for the Marlins or Indians while living in NYC.

        2. No kidding. Is that some in-joke?
It reads like the worst writing about Jeter.
Does Jeter believe all the wonderful things people write about him?
Please tell me its a clever joke.

    1. Dan McLaughlin:

Yankee doctors told Jeter he can't play again for a while, but it's OK because they gave him a gift basket to take home.

    1. Good for him. Nishi was a total disaster as a major league player, but he was easy to root for.

        1. Still HPR's favorite Twin. And without any games on broadcast, likely to remain that way for a long time.
          #2: Ben Revere
          #3: Denard Span
          #4: Joe Mauer

  3. Wild dont play until 9:30 tonight. ugh
BUT, an hour block of fresh Parks and Rec episodes (Patton Oswald is in one) will help tide things over.
And its a Christmas episode of Community, with the fresh snowfall it wont feel that out of place.

        1. Hell yes. Constable Bob was awesome. I loved the lines from Raylan about Bob in the episode where

      1. ok, just watched that YouTube clip, and that is awesome. If someone started a Kickstarter campaign for that pitch Id donate.

according to Ken Tremendous, the filibuster was improvised.

    1. Wild have a magic number of 7 points for a playoff spot against Columbus, Detroit, and Dallas.

They only need to get to 0 against two of those three.

On the road in San Jose is always tough (also the Sharks are 15-1-5 at home this year, yikes!)

Vancouver loses tonight, tightening that division race if the Wild can steal a point or two tonight.

  4. Trey had his best game tonight. Pitched 2 1/3 innings and threw a lot of strikes. Had three or four strikeouts. Gave up two runs with help from the closer, who stranded a runner at third. Trey also got a hit, "stole" second and third (the other team didn't attempt to throw out base runners) and scored on a wild pitch. His Rays team won 5-3. Trey is now 2-1 for a team with three wins on the season.

  5. Alex Meyer did not allow the ball out of the infield tonight in six innings. The only hit was an infield single to SS Danny Santana. 0 runs, 4 BBs and 5 Ks. 86 pitches, 50 for strikes. New Britain won 17-1.
