    1. Sheenie and I spent four hours sorting books at the Books for Africa warehouse. The New Lawyers Section of the Hennepin County Bar Association collected nearly 2500 books during the past two weeks that will be sent abroad.

        1. Heh, I spotted one of the books someone was donating and pulled it out to show Sheenie. It was a Trademark Law textbook she helped write (she was the research assistant for the professor).

    1. Segura was later caught stealing second.
MLB and b-ref boxscores put it as Braun caught stealing second (Segura unmoved), then Segura caught stealing third. WTF?

(What are the chances this embed works?)

      1. YEs, (unless you count that second tag when he wasn't touching the base after Braun was tagged which the ump missed). I don't remember the wording, but as he was the original possession of the base, he was entitled to it, not Braun. Which is why Braun was called out when tagged despite having a foot on the bag.

If his dugout had been on the third-base line, he might've stole third.

    2. So Braun was out because he ran to an occupied base, right? Then why wasn't Segura out for having moved backward? That's not allowed either...

        1. Once Braun was out, first was no longer occupied. He remained within the baseline. (or however that rule's written).

        2. Rule 7.08(i).

After he has acquired legal possession of a base, he runs the bases in reverse order for the purpose of confusing the defense or making a travesty of the game. The umpire shall immediately call “Time” and declare the runner out.

          It's the "Germany Schaefer rule."

Also, from the wikipedia article on stealing:

In a game on April 19, 2013,[25] Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Jean Segura stole second base in the bottom of the eighth inning. After the batter up, Ryan Braun, walked, Segura broke early for third base and the pitcher, Kevin Gregg of the Chicago Cubs, threw ahead of him. As Segura was chased back to second base, Braun advanced to second as well and was tagged out. Segura, thinking he was out, began to return to the home dugout behind first base, but first base coach Garth Iorg directed him to stand at first. While not technically safe, no Cubs player tagged Segura while at first. On the next pitch, he attempted to re-steal second and was thrown out by catcher Welington Castillo.

          1. So basically... I read that as "he would have been out, had he been tagged after leaving 2nd."

          2. for the purpose of confusing the defense or making a travesty of the game

I don't think either of those things applied.

            1. I agree. He attempted to steal first for the purpose of being confused himself and then desiring to be safely on a base.

Phil seems to suggest that if they would have tried to pick him off of first, he would have been out, even if on the bag when the tag happened. I would never have come up with that, but I guess that I can see it as a possible interpretation. Sadly, the Cubs never tested. That could be why the boxscore says that he was tagged stealing third. Should instead be picked off second, but that's a quibble.

              1. I think it could fall under the "travesty of the game" theory. Just because it's generally not allowed, and it's embarrassing that a player not know the rules. But I also think the only base he was entitled to was 2nd, and could have been out on that theory. And I also agree picked-off of 2nd is the proper box score.

      1. Braun was out because he was tagged while occupying the same base that was already occupied. Seguro was entitled to that base, so although he was on base, that fact provided him with no safety. (Again, I'm pretty sure I'm using all the wrong words.)

  2. Does anyone here use the HTTPS Everywhere extension or equivalent? I am going to enable SSL support for the WGOM and want to know if anyone might hit it before I make it default.

  3. Does anyone here use the HTTPS Everywhere extension or equivalent? I am going to enable SSL support

    Huh?

    1. HTTPS:

Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) is a widely used communications protocol for secure communication over a computer network, with especially wide deployment on the Internet.

      For the why:

HTTPS began to see widespread use for protecting page authenticity on all types of websites, securing accounts and keeping user communications, identity and web browsing private.

        1. Nothing, I hope. I'm just curious if anyone uses the browser extension as they might see it sooner. I think I will try to implement it Sunday and allow people to optionally use it for a while. The Youtube plugin forces HTTP, but except for that everything else will switch.

Another reason besides privacy, I think it will allow access to the WGOM behind more work filters/censors.

            1. Excellent. I think the extension uses whitelisting, so it won't automatically trigger for the WGOM. However, you do have my email so if things suddenly stop working, do email me.

            1. I am concerned about work proxies mucking with HTTPS connections. I'll keep both open for a while and let people try the secure version at various computers.

    1. My 80's self says that I have a copy of Kiss' Destroyer somewhere in the basement. I could have made a cassette tape of that for you

      1. Wrong Destroyer. This is the one that left George Thorogood and went solo. Or something.

    2. That explains the line outside the record store across the street from the brew shop. (I went to the brew shop)

      1. Record Theatre on Main and Kenmore. They also have a location on Lafayette and Main. Spiral Scratch on Bryant should have some promos going on today, too.

  4. For the record, appendicitis hurts. Like, hit by a truck hurts. No 420 for me, I have to make do with Percocet.

    1. Glad you're still around, Twayn. I know a few people in the last couple years that had their appendix rupture- it doesn't seem to be as life-threatening as it used to be, but it's still dangerous (and painful- they have all agreed on that!).

  5. Well, the Newmark Rays lost to the team that was winless, but Trey had his first two-hit game. He wasn't allowed to pitch due to pitch count and day off rules, and we had two of our best players missing, so a kid that had pitched only once before had to pitch the whole game. The only other kid that had pitched was the only one that had ever played catcher, so he played there the whole game. We only had nine, so the kids got to play the whole game at least. Trey got to play first for the first time, which he liked. I think he made our only out in the field on a two hopper right to him.

  6. My hands smell like a mixture of polyurethane and gasoline, because I sealed up the picnic table I made, then used gas to get the poly off my hands because I'm a very messy painter. I'm going to be so high later, with a killer headache to follow. Not looking forward to it.

      1. Had to go with what was on the premises, and the Zamboni runs on LP, so that was out. But thank you, I will keep that in mind if it's ever an option.

  7. I put the boy to bed in just enough time to enjoy an awesome 4th quarter of hoops here.

  8. Rick Porcello (DET): .2 IP 9h 9r 9er 1bb 0k 1hr
    Phil Humber (HOU): .1ip 8h 8r 8er 1bb 0k 1hr

    oof

    1. In fact, when the Twins did their routine ultrasound examinations of all their pitchers' arms at the start of spring training [emphasis mine]

Wonder how long that's been in place. Makes a lot of sense to do I think, assuming the ultrasound can reliably show the condition of the ligaments.

  9. since the Wolves season soured, I kind of lost interest in the NBA as a whole (it didnt help that all the NBA talk on ESPN revolved around the sorry ass Lakers), but I am super rooting for Memphis to win its first round series against the Clippers.
