Game 14: Twins @ White Sox

Baseball's back! Again!

Did you miss it? I'll bet you did.

Worley takes on Jake Peavey today. The Vanimal has been pretty dreadful so far, but that .455 BABIP will probably come down at some point. Even if it doesn't, he's only affecting one game out of five. The guy we traded him for isn't doing a lot better, and he's in every game.

I'm predicting a 13-0 away team victory.

  1. I'll be surprised if there's anyone in the stands, because EVERYONE AND THEIR MOTHER ATTORNEY ENTOURAGE EVERYONE IS AT ST. PETERS, MO MENARDS GRAND OPENING!!!1!!11!

    1. NU had a Menards opening a few days before Easter. Brad Radke was there. I was not notified until afterwards.

  2. the great Howard David on lead vocals for FOX. Loved it when he called that poor relay throw 'incomplete'.

      1. Early returns do have me happy the he wasn't the main prize of the trade. I hope he pulls a Doumit and turns it around.

  3. Jeebus, Plouffe. I think someone pranked him by nailing the bat to his shoulder. I also doubt the legitimacy of strike three to Arcia.

    1. maybe the Halos will tack on 9 more runs, then FOX is forced to switch to a more competitive game.

  4. Let's interrupt this baseball game for a Neil Diamond song during a break in a different city!

        1. I dunno. If they were to replace the 7th-inning jingoism with Sweet Caroline, I'd be ok with that.

          1. I'll agree with you there, at least. I'm more mad that they left a game in progress to show us turds.

          2. I don't really care what they sing during the seventh-inning stretch, but it annoys me when I'm subjected to what is being sung during another game's seventh-inning stretch (and interrupting the actual game I wanted to watch).

The terribleness of the singing was the icing on my crabby cake, though.

    1. Right. How dare FOX show Neil Diamond singing Sweet Caroline at the Red Sox game? These Bostonians seem to think of this awful song as an anthem of sorts, and that FOX would subject us to this sure is dumb! Yeah, there was a bombing at their marathon, and this heartless, heinous attack could just as easily have happened in any other city (Mpls, StL, Sacto, etc...), but don't let that get in the way of my enjoyment of a Brian Dozier at-bat!

Just another example of those ESPN Yankees, amiright boys?

      1. Oh yeah, to be trolled means you've made it, or something. I heard that once.

          1. But on a more serious note (and really - when I've devoted the last half hour in the middle of the night to replying to myself on this website, which I'm sure some of you have noted - I surely am someone to be taken seriously), it really sucks when a network broadcasts a performance of an awful song like anyone outside of a city might care a few days after a tragic attack on that city. This all has something to do with an east coast bias, or something. They never show the Twins on their 4ltr or whatever non-flyover conglomerate they are in times of crisis or sadness or anything. Jerks.

Go Twins. Go Dozier. Go one at bat, in one game, of 162 games, in which the team you root for will (may - don't be so negative) finish 20 games under .500. Go misuse of commas.

Hawk Harrelson is the worst. Seriously. I mean that.

            I GONE.

    1. When the game's on, the only diamond I want to see is the baseball diamond. Or Scott Diamond.

  5. I hate to make any light of a terrible situation, but the Red Sox are going to get annoying extremely fast. To hell with Sweet effing Caroline.

    1. This is insufferable. Stupid remote doesn't work anymore. Probably atrophy from only watching Qubo on this TV.

      1. My receiver was shut off as soon as I realized it wasn't a brief cut away, so I haven't heard any of it. I don't think I should be so upset, but that was the most annoying thing that could happen to me today and in no way honors anyone.

    1. also, they couldn't give him an earpiece or something so he's not trying to sing along to a song that's being played from thousand of feet away?

    2. They did, on the back side of the 7", but didn't have a way to play it.
"Recorded several years ago"? I have a different definition.

      1. Heh, I thought the same thing at the "recorded several years ago" line. Several decades, more like.

  6. so there was an 8-4 putout while Neil was singing and the only replay FOX showed was from a camera stationed at Wrigley Field

    1. This game is gonna ruin Arcia's Major-League future. "In the big-leagues, the strikezones are gigantic!"

  7. probably could have called batters interference on that too since De Aza was standing on home plate when Mauer was throwing.

  8. It's probably the right move to use Doumit, but I was hoping Arcia would get to bat.

  9. huh. So Neil Diamond decided to jump on a plane, fly to Boston, then called the Red Sox to ask them if he could sing.

Still, the Sox should have had a karaoke version of the song on hand.

      1. I wonder what the Twins would do if Prince decided to drive down to Target Field and asked to sing on spot.

  10. I know we really don't have another center fielder, but it makes me a little sad that Hicks is going to have to hit here. Maybe Hicks can turn my frown upside down.

  11. How many years does Adam Dunn have to fight a losing battle against the Mendoza line before he's no longer considered to be "slumping"?

    1. coming into this game, Dunn has played 288 games for the Sox. His slash line is .180/.308/.376/.683 OPS+ 83
$15 mil this year, $15 mil next year

  12. Well, his WHIP is already ruined, so my fantasy team doesn't care anymore, so here's hoping for a Crainwreck.

      1. For instance, leaving Dunce in to face Konerko with Perkins existing. Let's watch.

  13. Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino
Plouffe grounds to second to end the 9th. 14 stranded, 1 for 11 RISP for Twins

    belch

  14. that ball must have caught an updraft or something because I didnt think Willingham had a chance to catch that one.

  15. Twins have had 3 cancelled ballgames this week, lets make it up by playing extra innings!

  16. That White Sox fan must be thrilled he knows how to pronounce "Mauer" properly with how much he's shouting it.

    1. yeah, i would've turned down the on-field mic a couple of innings ago. i'm looking at tickets for tomorrow's game with an eye on getting as close to the field as (cheaply as) possible, so maybe you'll hear me tomorrow. anything in particular i should be yelling out? anyone in particular on field Pete and i should attack?

      1. Huh. Wikipedia lists Stillwater, but baseball-reference.com says that was just for high school.

  17. Minnesota came into the game hitting .296 with runners in scoring position, which ranked third in baseball, but stranded 14 runners and went 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

I guess we can give them a pass on today's game, especially considering the strike zone.

  18. After striking out 20 times in his first 10 games, Hicks now has three consecutive games without a K (two starts) and has five walks in those three games.

    1. That would seem to be a very good sign. Once he starts forcing pitchers to give him hittable pitches, it'll only be a matter of time.

  19. I didnt think much of the play at the time, but I guess the Mauer 'hit and run' play was a controversy on the Twitter machines
    Mike Berardino writes about it

on another note, the PiPress seems to have hit a home run by hiring Berardino. Interesting on Twitter and seems to find interesting angles to write about. Cant remember the last time I clicked on an article written by the beat writers at the Strib.

    1. From that article:

"I've never put a hit-and-run on with Mauer in my life," Gardenhire said. "He hits .340. I don't put hit- and-runs on with him. (Dozier) just had a straight steal. Green light with my runner at first base. He ran, and Joe swung. So you guys can stop that second-guessing."

In what fantasy-land is Gardy living? I can remember numerous hit-and-runs with Mauer during his career. I highly doubt that on every single time Mauer swung at a pitch with a player running and less than a 3-2 count, he just happened to swing at the exact pitch the runner was running. Just say you didn't call for it yesterday, Gardy. Don't lie to everyone who has actually watched the Twins play.

  20. We haven't lost in a week! No reason that shouldn't continue! We're still on track for 155-7!
