  1. From Berardino's story about Jack Goin:

    The topic is ground-ball pitchers.

Specifically, whether the Twins set out this winter to acquire this particular sabermetric-friendly subset in transactions for right-handers Vance Worley (trade), Mike Pelfrey (free agency) and Kevin Correia (free agency).

I'm not sure how "sabermetric-friendly" ground-ball pitchers are when "keeping it on the ground" has been preached for a long time.

  2. Anyone got advice for moving up to better seats? Taking HPR tonight, Tix are 3rd row, section 325.
I'd assume that we could find much better seats with no-one in them.
I've never really moved around before, what do ushers accept and what is verboten?

    1. Here's my advice, and I do this ALLLLLLLL the time:

Grab something at the concession-stand (hot dogs or something; perferably something that could be missing if you're fumbling around with it) and have that in one hand, and hold HPR's hand in your other. Then just look past the usher and walk right down to a good seat. Find a mostly empty row, and sit a few seats in from the aisle. Then, if someone comes, you can slide in if you're actually in their seats.

If the first usher nails you, just walk away and try again a few sections down. The biggest thing is to act like you belong.

    2. Yeah it's all just a matter of looking like you know where you're going. In addition to DPWY's concession advice, I would recommend waiting until the third or fourth inning. By that point it's obvious which seats are empty and will stay empty, and the ushers don't really care anymore. Last game I went to (the almost no-hitter against the Mets a few Saturdays ago), I had tickets in one of the 300 sections. We moved down to the section right behind home plate and nobody batted an eye.

    1. Full, official caucus? Sure, I think I will be able to carve out an afternoon and evening for it.

      1. i've no plans that day (that i know of) so anytime would be fine by me. i'd suggest some baseball game activity, but as it's the red sox in town, i'm guessing tickets will be unnecessarily expensive (and i'm going on sunday anyway).

    2. Ooh...I'm so tempted to conscript you all to move heavy furniture and paint the baby's room--I make a d@mn good pizza and would have plenty of beer on hand. However, I suspect someone else will come up with a more compelling option than that one!

          1. Our cask tomorrow afternoon is going to be IPA with Sriracha. That's right, it is back. Our classic English-style IPA with the Vietnamese-style chili-garlic sauce. It is a perfect combination.

We're just saying... we have an Oyster Stout on tap, and we'd like to think it is better than Guinness.

            1. I still have the Oyster Stout meat procured for me in Dublin. I'm waiting for FTLT to have a free weekend so I can share with him.

Related note - meat, I've gotten your return beer. I'll let you know when it ships.

                1. I should add that I found a bottle of oyster ( and a bottle of wrastlers) at my local whole paycheck last week. I enjoyed them with the last of the cold weather.

    3. I've already turned down a family reunion in NU for that weekend because it's the only weekend otherwise free from like Next week until the 4th of July. I'm unfortunately a no until July.

      1. That reminds me of the futuristic baseball ad that had three pitchers throwing at the same time.

  3. Great game between New Britain and New Hampshire. Tied at 1-1 in the fifth. Alex Meyer is pitching. Listen to it here. Gameday is here.

    1. Rock Cats win 4-1. Meyer went 7 innings, and gave up just one run on 8 hits and 1 BB with 7 Ks. Lowered his ERA to 1.64.

  4. Wild Playoff Chase

For the first time since 2008, today is a day that the Wild could clinch a playoff berth.

But first, Detroit won again, keeping the 7-9 spots very tight. San Jose and Los Angeles both lost in regulation, and so failed to generate any clarity as to who will play each other once the playoffs start.

    4. LA — 57 pts (one game remaining - Sat. v. SJ)
    5. SJ — 57 pts (one game remaining - Sat. @ LA)
    6. STL — 56 pts (clinched playoff berth)
    7. MIN — 53 pts
    8. DET — 52 pts (Wild’s Magic Number = 4)
    ————
    9. CLB — 51 pts (Wild’s Magic Number = 2)
    10. DAL -- 48 pts

    Tonight’s Games

Columbus @ Dallas - Dallas is still technically in the hunt for a playoff spot. If the Stars win in regulation, the Wild are in!

Nashville @ Detroit - If Dallas gets 2 points while Detroit gets 0, it sets up that Red Wings @ Stars matchup on the final day of the season quite nicely.

Calgary @ St. Louis - Potentially interesting for seeding purposes. 2 points for the Blues means the Wild can't catch them.

        1. It's been nice to catch these updates - thanks Ghost. Been very busy with new job, selling house, moving (soon) and life so I haven't been paying attention (plus loosing streaks).

    1. That's pretty cool. I downloaded that episode yesterday but haven't had a chance to listen to it yet.

    1. Correia is tied for sixth in rWAR for pitchers with 1.2, which is the same rWAR as Mauer.

      1. If Correia pitches like a replacement level starter for the rest of the season, he will be worth about $6.5-$8 million dollars. The $6.5 million figure comes from assuming $5.5 million/win, which could be argued was a bit low even when the Twins signed Correia.

  5. Nothing is more exciting than when Jacksonville is on the clock in the 7th round. Boo-yeah!

    1. I was flipping around channel and stumbled onto ESPN and this was the question I heard asked to Mel Kiper

      'Mel, can you teleport?'

makes me want to stick around
