June 3, 2013: Little Swimmer

My Sour Cream is in swimming lessons now and seems to be progressing quickly. I'm glad these things are at 9:30, because a couple of hours later the heat is unbearable.

      1. Five seasons in ten years. Ol' Doc takes his time, eh?

Coincidentally, I finally got around to season four on Netflix last week. I'm done with the first half - the second half arrives today.

      2. I'm only 3 seasons into Venture Bros. That's as far as I got two summers ago before I went to Prague. Now that we have Netflix again, it's on my list to finish right after Bob's Burgers.

      3. jeesh, Im 2 seasons behind on Venture Bros.
I was following along on the AdultSwim website, but at the time it was not well organized and I got frustrated and havent been back

    2. Regarding the GoT spoiler, for those who have read the books

      1. Ours was about 60/40 in my time at Minnesota State, but the - uh - general "friendliness" of the women made it seem like a ratio that was easy to work with...

        1. Dude, you were a drama major (or somesuch). Sign up for an engineering class sometime and then get back to me. We would have 60 people in a class and sometimes there were zero females. Zero!

          1. Yeah, I certainly never figured our ratio to be that bad. I can't imagine having no females in the room. I think I would have just about gone crazy.

          2. Ahhh yes, I remember those days. There were two women in the program during the time I was in college. It made the end of major projects quite the sausage fest at the bar afterwards.

          3. Sheenie's mechanical engineering program was 50/50 at GW. Of course, all the other engineering programs were very lopsided.

        2. I went to SCSU intending to become an English teacher and later changed majors to journalism. No shortage of women in either program there.

      2. Right. NDSU's two biggest colleges are engineering and agriculture, neither of which were coed friendly. Between those two colleges, that was almost half the undergraduate student body.

    1. the male/female ratio of students at NDSU is 57/43

So that's where all the guys are going to School.

Actually I think UMN Twin Cities campus is closer to 55-45 female to male, it's the coordinate campuses like Crookston and Duluth which bring the ratio down to 52-48 system-wide. Some of the liberal arts colleges we visited this past year were nearing 60 percent (and above) women.

    2. Social work here. 10/90 ratio. I didn't date any of them, but I generally enjoy being around women.

  2. I am traveling tonight and will most of it, I think. That game on Saturday night was something. I think the Heat win tonight, but I would not at all be surprised if they don't.

    1. Just think if Vogel hadn't overcoached and kept Hibbard on the court at the end of game 1, Indy could have already punched its ticket to the Finals!

      1. I've thought about that. If Miami wins, that will be a bitter pill for Pacers fans. This Indy club, win or lose, is darned good. Hibbert is a man. George is fantastic. When they get Granger back next year, they will be a force.

        1. I'm happily eating crow about Hibbert, absolutely hated that draft pick. His development has been shocking.

I wonder if they try to move Granger in the next year or so (even for pennies on the $) to help keep the core of this playoff run together. George is about to get PAID, Stevenson needs a new deal, and West is a free agent. They are already pretty thin at guard.

          1. I remember watching Roy Hibbert in the 2006 Kenner League (DC Summer league played in an old gym on Georgetown's campus) as he was getting absolutely torched defensively by all these little 6'5" guys from American and Mt. St. Mary's and other smaller regional schools. He was way too slow to keep up with anybody on defense and his offense was a disaster. It was HILARIOUS as all the Georgetown fans were treating him like a five year old, "It's ok, Roy." "You'll get him next time, Roy." "Just keep shooting, Roy." P&R has made me appreciate him more, but I'll always remember a giant pushover.

(After his game, he came back and ate two Chipotle burrito bowls in the stands while watching the later games.)

          2. He's still got room for improvement on the offensive end, but defensively, he's a beast. He already made the play of the playoffs (Melo!), and he's basically stopped LeBron from getting to the rim when he's in there. He's been awesome.

  3. Anyone have any sense of what a reasonable cost is for a 2-day a week (mornings only) preschool?

      1. We have the single greatest deal for daycare ever. They're part time, and she goes hourly for part time, and... yeah, it's pretty much awesome.

        1. When my daughter was first born, we had the actual single greatest deal for daycare ever. My wife was working as a nanny and the family was cool with the Trinket being there as well. So we were getting paid for the daycare.

            1. And then lost when they decided to put their kids in a regular day care. Man I miss that money.

        2. sorry, Phyllo, but the single greatest preschool deal EVAH is at this school. It might be a bit of a long haul for you in the mornings, however.

      1. We looked at one this morning that was $100/mo. That works out to a little more than $5/hour, but we can drop off up to an hour early for no charge (not that we'd use that service much).

    1. Philo, hit me up outside the WGOM and I'll put you in contact with a good (and relatively inexpensive) preschool.

      1. If it's in the north metro, I'd be potentially interested. We're looking at Elim Baptist for GRZ currently.

    1. When you can cut a young player (I don't think think Robertson is particularly good even) to make room on the 40 man roster for Clete Thomas you gotta do it.

      Clete.

    2. The Twins have had Eduardo Escobar batting leadoff the past two games. He's probably the worst hitter on the roster, Clete included. Too bad the Twins don't have a center fielder in Rochester with a career OBP above .400. Oh wait, they do.

      1. Gardy should put Florimon at leadoff. He's a middle infielder, scrappy, and has a .331 OBP.

          1. Hitting Florimon there wouldn't actually be that crazy (sadly, perhaps.) Following the maxim that you want your 5 best hitters in the top 5 lineup slots, here are the Twins with 95+ PA sorted by wOBA this season:

            .392 -- Mauer

            Gap

            Big Gap

            More like a chasm

            .351 -- Willinham
            .334 -- Arcia
            .332 -- Plouffe
            .318 -- Morneau
            .308 -- Florimon
            .306 -- Doumit
            .299 -- Parmelee

            Big Gap

            .270 -- Escobar
            .269 -- Dozier
            .257 -- Hicks
            .250 -- Carroll

With Arcia and Plouffe unavailable, the Twins' best 5 hitters are arguably Mauer, Willingham, Morneau, Florimon, and Doumit. It also seems pretty straightforward to arrange them as Florimon-Mauer-Willingham-Morneau-Doumit.

      2. Nice piece, socal. But where are you gonna play him? The Twins pretty obviously have committed themselves to Hicks in CF. Too bad he's not a middle infielder....

        1. I'm thinking more of just a fourth outfielder. After Clete's last run with the Twins, I can't believe he'll be any good this time. Maybe an occasional homer.

          1. we hope, because that will mean that his power has developed and, hopefully, Buxton is ready. But two years is a long time.

            1. Well, I, for one, am willing to pump the team up in my mind over the next two years for Buxton-Sano-Hicks.

                1. I'm prety shure thats wear that panzy $$$Mauer will be waistin a roster spot with his milions dollar singels!!11!

            2. If you give Hicks a mulligan on the first 14 games of the season (it being his first experience in MLB and having skipped AAA), he's had a .231 ISO since. For comparison:

              .194 ISO -- Kubel, career
              .207 ISO -- Morneau, career
              .187 ISO -- Torii, career
              .187 ISO -- Cuddyer, career

Last year in AA, Hicks hit for a .174 ISO, so .231 is probably too much to ask for the balance of the season, but I think he has the power to play a corner, especially since he should be a plus defender in a corner. Maybe not a Carl Crawford or Ichiro, but someone who helps fill the gaps. It's probably a bigger question if he can hit for enough average, but it seems reasonable enough to expect that he will.

I don't know what the Twins' internal discussions were like around Hicks when he was hitting .059/.200/.059 on April 21st, but I really like that he's been able to improve on that start. It's like the boxing cliche, everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face. Hicks got punched in the face and he's weathered the storm.

              1. he just needs to have more plate appearances in the 4th inning (316/350/947!!!!!111one1111!!!!)

    3. 🙁
I witnessed TyRob's debut striking out the side. And he's got an impressive beard.
Furthermore, it should be well known by now that my favorite players are middling Lefty relievers.
Will someone claim him or will the Twins be able to keep him?

      1. If he's lost, just remember that the Twins could have DFA'ed Drew Butera and I'm pretty sure he makes it through waivers and ends up in Rochester.

    1. I'm sure Catherine Zeta Jones is thrilled at his admission.

@dadboner has some good commentary on this.

      1. He's just getting back at her for her refusal to spend time with him in the hospital when he was fighting for his life. I suspect that War of the Roses is kind of how his home life is.

  4. So, the police can take a sample of your DNA if you are arrested according to the US Supremes in a 5-4 decision handed down today.

Edit: I should add that the decision is more nuanced than what I wrote above. I really only pointed out for the purposes of what I wrote in the spoiler.

                1. Gentlemen, thanks for the conversation.

I don't know about the rest of you, but for my money the spoiler function works like a beauty, eh?

                  1. I agree, and thank you all for using it. I still think we should have some limits, but as long as such things stay under cover of Spoiler I don't think there's a need to complain.

    1. Jeter with 380,000 votes. Why not 2 million? ii in third place in the outfield!?!

  5. My dealings with the City of St. Paul regarding the towing of my car in February have been less than pleasant. I got my letter back from the office of risk management last week which offered to reimburse me for the towing and storage of my car, but not for the ticket. I was less than pleased. I've now spent the last week attempting to get a hold of the one person who I can speak to regarding this claim... who was out of office all last week and has been unavailable today. I just want my money back.

    1. Adderall use without an exemption is prohibited under the Joint Drug Agreement between Major League Baseball and its players' union. More than 110 players were granted exemptions in 2012, according to the independent program administrator's report released in November.

who knew that ADHD was so prevalent in elite athletes?!

    1. Who's this guy on the Pacers who keeps jacking up threes all over the place? I wish he'd stop.

  6. Is it pretty safe to assume that Justin Bieber also has a Patriots jersey and Yankees hat laying around somewhere?
