I'm allowed to do it for the first time in ages. It's probably not more than a week, realistically, but I need to do it more as I age...

Sounds like a stormy morning in the Twin Cities. Stay safe, everybody.
I think it's been three or four months since I saw a drop of precipitation, at least. I'll take some, Minnesota, to lighten the load.
well then

ROSTER MOVE: The @Twins placed Mike Pelfrey on the DL with a back strain & will recall LHP Pedro Hernandez - Hernandez will start today.
I wonder if the 'back strain' (never heard of it) is something that doesnt really need a DL stint, but with Swarzak and Pressley burned up last night its just easier going this route
No. They would have DL'd Swarzak or Pressly, then. This is disastrous because Pedro is fourth or fifth on the list of pitchers to come up and pitch for the Twins, but because Gibson and Vanimal just pitched, Pedro was the one available to pitch today.
Oh wait, I see what you're saying. He is hurt, but maybe not that bad. They couldn't go with a bullpen game, so went the DL route. I wish they would have called up Gibson or Vanimal and just moved the next pitcher (Correia?) up a day.
listened to the Gardy radio show and he said that Pelfrey was doing some running yesterday and felt something in his back. So Then it sounded like they called Rochester during the game last night because of the short start and Hernando (Gardys nickname) drove up from Louisville) Sounds lie they will retroactively place Pelfrey on the DL and he will miss 2 starts
Pedro wasn't even in the AAA rotation. His last outing was out of the bullpen. Nice.
I dropped off Dr. Chop at the airport yesterday bound for London. She just skype'd me from a pub in Islington with a pint of Fosters* in her hand. I'm impressed / frightened with the march of technology.
*it's her go to English pub drink. It's not my fault.
Foster's. It's Australian for p*******r. 😉
There is a letter in today's Strib in response to Souhan's article on Mauer. The first sentence says it all:
I normally agree with Jim Souhan, but Sunday's article defending Joe Mauer's $23M salary borders on comical. Yes, relative to the other overpaid bums Souhan listed in his article, you could make an argument that Mauer is worth the money. However, when taking a peek at the numbers for the AL leaders in today's paper, Mauer's numbers are laughable! I thought it was Souhan who coined Mauer "the highest priced singles hitter in MLB history." I think that is a more apt description. Yes, he plays decent defense and has a high on-base percentage, but his hitting numbers sound like those of a utility infielder at best.
in his career, Joe Mauer gets and extra base hit 8.1% of the time, league average over that 10 years is 7.8%
not enough dingers.
I want to know what utility infielder has a .323 career batting average.
If you really want to stretch the definition of utility player, how about Pete Rose or Paul Molitor? (One of the two isn't even in the Hall of Fame!)
Joe Mauer also has a higher SLG% than Torii Hunter while playing ~100 less games.

I took a long lunch and went down to the Royal Mile. I remember hugging and high-fiving complete strangers in that way that only comes from unadulterated joy. The only similar sporting situation emotion-wise I've ever felt like that was when Ireland won the Grand Slam when I lived in Dublin.
I have this entire game on my external HD (along with the Ireland clincher).
I remember watching this one with, among others, Tony Sanneh and LEN3. I'm pretty sure LEN3 and I hugged while jumping around like idiots after the goal.
I got my bike completely fixed. Total cost - $21 for parts. It's an 18-in frame mountain bike, so it's too small and too heavy for what I want to use it for. I'm gonna put it on Craigslist and use the proceeds to custom build something.
Now come fix up the Boy's old bike. The Girl needs it for her summer o' science in Davisville.
I'm sure it'll cost you more in airfare to fly me out than get it serviced locally, but I'm willing to make the trip if you really want me to.
I'll make lentil salad!
dude, you don't win friends with salad.
That's a winner.
the White Sox lost to the Royals in hilarious fashion. In the 8th, Jesse Crain walked a guy with the bases loaded then the next Royals batter hit an easy DP ball to Alexi Ramirez, who let it go right through him and two runs scored.

"Saber people get all worked up over BB's, Joey Votto is paid to drive in runs, and he's on pace for 80 RBI."-Marty B, 700 WLW #Reds

If Cincy wants to dump Votto, I'd hope the Twins would be willing to deal. I think Gardy could find a place in the lineup for 327/442/521. I love the Mountie, but I'd rather have Votto at 1b.
Byron Buxton gets promoted for Fort Myers. Dougie Baseball does the happy dance.
Jeff Sullivan's write-up accompanying #4 here is really, really funny.

this sounds like the Cincy version of 'singles hitter Mauer'
