  1. Mauer catching a day game after catching a night game? What's Danny B going to whine about? Surprising to not see Mauer at 1B with Morneau getting the day off.

If Danny B had a radio program in the 1960s do you think he'd constantly harp on Harmon Killebrew's low batting average?

    1. There was some wondering by Dick'n'Bert if Mauer might catch today due to Doumit's heel.

Most definitely. That and too many walks (not being aggressive enough in RBI situations, etc.). Those complaints are probably why it took so long for him to get into the Hall of Fame.

  2. With Brian Dozier batting, missed catch error by Tom Koehler on the pickoff attempt, Clete Thomas to 3rd.
    What?

    1. Is this game televised on FSN? If so I bet DicknBert are practically foaming at the mouth.

  3. I couldn't find the DirecTV remote here at work until just now so all I've managed to see is Parmelee's bases-loaded groundout. Sorry, dudes.

    1. I haven't checked, but I think this is about the 206th game in a row where Diamond sailed along for four or five innings and then fell apart. At some point, shouldn't the manager be prepared for it to happen?

        FTFY

      2. This has been way overstated for him. In this game, it was one pitch that scored two runs after a flair single. The other scored on an infield out following two bloop hits and a ground ball that went through the infield. The fourth run he allowed came after the silly decision to pull him and the next guy gave up a home run. Why allow Diamond to hit and then pull him after another ground ball single? Even the home run he gave up was because he had a three-run lead and was challenging a bad hitter who hadn't hit one out since last August. He hit it out. Give the guy credit. I agree with Bert that they should have tried to go away instead of inside, but it was right down the middle (but low) so it may not have mattered where they set up. Diamond came into the game with a .333 BABIP. The Marlins made eight consecutive outs on balls in play and then suddenly went 5-for-7 on balls in play against Diamond with none of them being classified as a line drive. That's just the way it goes sometimes. When stuff like that happens, our inclination is to say that something changed with the pitcher. We don't like to use random chance as an excuse, but it does happen. Fangraphs shows that his xFIP today was 3.16.

  4. Interesting listening to Dazzle and Provus discuss Slowey's history. While not approving what happened, at least they're not excoriating him for it.

    1. So if Twins don't score any more runs, Kevin Slowey is your winning pitcher. That might even make Dick Bremer swear.

      1. I hope that a few of you guys who, as Pek would say, "Got Twitters" are trolling Dick right now.

      1. I don't get very much after the game, but they were pretty decent about it during the game. Didn't make much commentary about Slowey with the Twins. Pretty much left well enough alone.

  5. From the PiPress:

Add in Ed Lucas' bloop single on another 0-2 count, and Diamond's lack of a consistent put-away pitch was a glaring weakness on this day.

Nevermind that Diamond had a season-high four strikeouts in five innings today.

  6. Also:

MIAMI -- Scott Diamond had a three-run lead before he ever took the mound Wednesday afternoon at Marlins Park.

    And still he couldn't win.

Three whole runs! Wow. That's like a week's worth of runs, isn't it? Three runs and only nine innings to protect it. Can't be the offense's fault.

  7. Well, we can't really expect to beat a juggernaut like Miami. Fortunately, we don't play them any more, and next week we get to fatten our record against the weaklings of the American League East. So, we'll just have to settle for 122-40!
