well, dang, they DID use opening day. usually they're lazier than that.
Perhaps Opening Day 2012? Markakis thrown out at home in the bottom of the sixth.
the game was a K-fest last night, the MVP thing was...a thing. Neil F'ing Diamond? Ugh. Where the hell was "Take Me Out to the Ballgame"??
but the game log was dynamite. Well played, Citizens.
Seriously, non-pro games are the best to go to (Northwoods League, FTW). We get to buy peanuts and cracker jacks every 7th inning.
Northwoods League games are pretty fun. I haven't been to any Beetles Blue Anchors games (Blue Anchors? Really?? meh.) yet this summer.
I love every single name in both divisions with the exception of the Rox. Seriously, St. Cloud, you could have spelled it Rocks and it would have worked great. I love the generally quirky nature of the team names, even if they sound a little stupid sometimes.
Also great is that Madison looks really good this year and won the South division in the first half. So, winning baseball!
I liked the Beetles, but that's partially because I liked the purple in the uniform. Also, "Blue Anchors" is just... I dunno, it doesn't work for me (though I agree in general, re: quirky team names).
I have no idea how the team is actually doing. I never really do. I just enjoy going to the games.
A quick check of the standings says that plenty of tickets are probably available for Blue Anchors games.
Also, yeah, I'll agree that Beetles would be better.
I love minor league team names all over the place - the goofier the better. Everett AquaSox, for instance. Tri-Cities Dust Devils.
We've got the Frontier League here around StL, and the Rascals usually put on a good game for us.
Blue Anchors? ugh.
Neil was in DC on the 4th singing a new song and sounded great. Last night, not so much. I love it that he sang the BoSox (traditional for their park anyway) song in NYC though.
seriously? I watched the part of the Capitol Fourth that inflicted him on the world and thought it was awful.
better than Barry Manilow.
Hard to beat Weekend in New England.
Turns out the whole pregnancy thing was a false alarm. This was the third time she thought she was pregnant, and the other two times she was right, so we were a little worried about this. We would have figured it out somehow, but we've gotten too close to getting out of debt to derail it now.
At least we got to hear citizens tell their vasectomy and Natural Family Planning stories because of your false alarm!
And possibly spawned a mini-caucus splinter group gathering
I actually really appreciated the conversation.
And I'll admit to having been excited about the idea of another dairy product running around.
I was too. We're probably done, but this experience did show us that if we're not, that's okay too. It just isn't a good time.
When it is a good time, we'll likely be too old. So, back to "probably done."
What my mom thought was menopause turned out to be my youngest brother. "Too old" ain't a thing until it's really a thing.
Well, yeah. I meant "Old enough that we'd consider ourselves too old to have kids."
Almost universally in my experience, when the youngest leaves home, the parents say to themselves, "maybe we should have had just one more..."
<--- exception
I'll admit my experience is largely limited to family, who might tend to have similar thoughts on the topic. But I've heard it plenty.
what Rhu said. I may well help the Girl pack.
I was also excited for a spookymilk jr or Dairylass IV.
Still curious what the signs were.
Late for her time of the month, tender rack, exhaustion.
Well that's boring. I was hoping it would be like "Mercury is in retrograde and a plague of locusts appeared at Alexandria."
Incredibly boring. Try again Spooky, but this time be creative!
I'm thankful my vasectomy wasn't half-baked.
amen
After Colin (Grey)'s vasectomy story, I didn't realize there was a non-horrifying type of vasectomy.
Really, there was a vasectomy thread? What about a reverse vasectomy thread?
just think it's ironic that this was mentioned recently... hopefully I'll have an addendum to this story in a couple months π
Not at all ironic; I think it's mentioned every 2-3 weeks or so π
We are obsessed with our packages.
To be fair, I'm more obsessed with everyone else's packages.
and this is why kids don't shower after gym class any more.
So I ordered an SD card for my phone today because I want to put my music on there so I can stop carrying around two devices and so I can never ever look at iTunes again. Any recommendations for a good mp3 playing app for an Android device? I don't really want to use the Google player that came with it.
I actually think play music is pretty solid, but if you are looking for something else Apollo is solid although you might have to google it, or Winamp is also on android which I've used and been happy with.
For a company that's supposed to be good at creating intuitive interfaces, iTunes is a pretty big fail.
Alright peoples, I need recommendations for (or against, I suppose) smartphones and data plans, if you please.
I'd be really tempted to go pay as you go with one of the smaller providers. My brother and one of my co-workers do that, and if you get a Nexus 4, the up front cost of the phone isn't too crazy. You also own everything free and clear, so if you don't like the service you're getting, it isn't too bad to switch, unlike the big 3 or 4 providers.
I recently switched to Virgin Mobile on the 300 minutes/unlimited text/unlimited data plan for $35/month, no contract. I bought the Kyocera Event for $60 and it works pretty well. I get fine service (they use Sprint towers) outside of Madison, so I'd imagine inside Buffalo would be ok. They do have a coverage map if you want to check it out.
I had a coworker praising this very plan this afternoon.
I've been very happy with Sprint's pricing. I've not been particularly pleased with Sprint's coverage in our area (YMMV).
As far as smartphones go, I'm in love with the Galaxy S3. We had Samsung Transforms before, and those were the worst phones we'd ever used, but the S3 is just wonderful.
I and a bunch of coworkers switched to T-Mobile's $30/mo prepaid plan. 100 minutes, unlimited text, and 5 GB of data at 4"G" speeds (really slow after that). As rpz mentions above, most of us opted for the Nexus 4. I ended up getting the more expensive, 16 GB version for $350 due to the cheaper one not being in stock.
Upsides: great phone and coverage here in the Twin Cities is pretty good. Any phone with a SIM works, so you have great flexibility of changing phones whenever you want.
Downsides: can't temporarily change plan (say, to get more minutes for a month or two). You can go over anyway for $.10/minute.
mc just got that plan. I've been heavily considering it, since I rarely talk on the phone.
I upgraded to the Droid 4 early this year and have been pretty happy with it. It's more than I need; I'm not a big "app" guy so a lot of the functions go unused. However, I wanted a phone with both touch screen and keyboard (the largest device-limiter), ability to hold and play music, a decent camera, large screen and this one has all of that in spades.
As for service, my wife and I use Verizon. I have unlimited text and 2 GB of data at 4G speeds (rarely used but available) and we share 700 minutes. I'm not very happy with the pricing but haven't shopped around much so I don't know if it's reasonable for the plan we have.
I waited a while for an upgrade to the Droid 4, as I wanted a phone with a keyboard since I was coming from the Droid 2. Device makers moved on from that type of phone though, so they all sucked in different ways. Now, I find I don't miss a physical keyboard except when ssh'd somewhere. That doesn't happen often, so I live with it.
That will likely be my progression as well...dang kids and their touch screens and apps and what-not.
I was not looking forward to the touchscreen when I got my iPhone a couple months ago, but it has pretty much been a non-issue for me.
I've got almost exactly the same Verizon plan as CoC mentions, too. Definitely not the best pricing, but it's the best service available in SD (and only service, in some of the western parts).
Looks like a slow news day. Let's try this card -- from this year's Topps Opening Day "Play Hard" insert set, so it should be a 2012 game.
Opening Day 2012 - Markakis out at home from Willingham in the bottom of the 6th.
Video
