2013 Game 100: Minnesota Twins at Seattle Mariners

Scott Diamond

Felix Hernandez

Finally a game I will be able to stay up late enough to watch. Except I will be at the end of a move and internet access may or may not be enabled yet. I hope to come back to an awesome gamelog.

  1. Took the wife here for our delayed anniversary celeb (26 clicks, pallos).

2T Not bad - she had the veal saltimbocca, me the hangar steak.

    1. Way I remember our marriage year is the Twins winning the World Series - thank you TK!

      1. I remember that year, too. Santa Claus was good to me and I was excited about joining Little League

      1. I use the WS reference too, the Mrs. & I were married in '91. Tomorrow will be 22 years.

  2. Ryan Doumit had a hot start to June, but since June 9th, he has a slash line of .238/.290/.308/.598 and only has 1 HR (155 plate appearances)

      1. I like how we have only two outfielders on the roster so that one of the catchers has a defensive position to man.

          1. Eh, they could drop a pitcher out of the bullpen to call up an outfielder if they have one that they aren't trying to teach a lesson to.

      2. I just realized that while writing a comment below. Bench: Colabello, Bernier, Plouffe. This might be the worst depth the team has had since the '90s.

  3. A Dialogue on 3 Catchers:

    Q. What's the point in having 3 catchers?

    A. If one catcher starts the game as the DH and that day's catcher is injured, then you must lose the DH to replace your catcher. (Potential downside: you might score 20 runs even if you lose the DH.)

Q What's the point in having 3 catchers if none of them is going to DH?

    A. Wait, Doumit is DH'ing tonight? Really, they couldn't go 5 days without DH'ing Doumit in order to avoid calling up Butera?

      1. Thanks, Twayn. I just moved (within town) earlier this month and we splurged on cable, so I have a better chance of catching the Twins if they are on MLB Network or elsewhere. (Or playing the Mariners, like tonight.) And of course, I'll be able to see them in the first round of the playoffs on TBS.

    1. so far, Herrmann has played 5 games at C and 5 games in the OF. If there is an injury, slide him from OF to C.
      That's nice versatility.

      1. I suppose there chances of Butera and Herrmann both getting hurt in the same game are fairly slim, but I'm surprised that didn't keep Gardy from starting them both in the same game with Doumit at DH.

        1. as recently as last Sunday, Gardy trotted out Herrman C, Mauer DH, Doumit RF
so he is not against using the 3 catcher/hybrid lineup

        2. If any two position players get injured, they are in danger of having to play a pitcher in the field.

    1. Butera is my kryptonite. I try to ignore the (s)crappy players, but I can't get past his presence. The Twins calling him up is the equivalent of that random girl you convince to play on your co-ed softball team even though she's never played softball, just so you don't have to forfeit.

      1. Reminds me of the submarine movies where the captain takes the boat below where specs say they can run and the pipes are bursting, hands running back and forth with wrenches. A few have to be sacrificed due to the tilt underwater. Classic sub movie.

  4. former Twins great (although that one year....yikes!) Jim Deshaies is the color guy for the Cubs on WGN. He is spouting off things like LOB% and the luck involved. crazy.

  5. Just joined the game a few minutes ago. Mariner feed is focusing on Bend, Oregon for some reason that was probably spelled out when the game started. They talked for a bit about Deschutes brewery (specifically Mirror Pond) for a while.

      1. Nothing special good or bad, but I'm not so sure the Twins will get to the bullpen.

  6. Is Nick Franklin wearing the safer batting helmet (rated to a higher pitch speed) or is his head just tiny? I can't convince myself one way or the other though I am leaning towards the former.

    1. Every time I see somebody with the double ear flap helmet, I swear they have a tiny head.

      1. I feel like this is a new development--Knoblauch had the double-flap and the flaps seemed pretty thin and flimsy.

  7. Okay, everyone sees the beautiful weather on the TV? I'm going to go hang out at a park with some friends, drink some beer, and enjoy that weather. If the Twins come back to win this, I will not regret the Butera PAs that I will miss.

  8. Mariners feed helpfully shows me this:

Felix Hernandez: 7 Career wins when offense scores 1 run or less

Um...I think you can just say "one run," guys.

    1. the modern day Bert Blyleven? (ok, Blyleven has fifteen 1-0 shutout wins, which is pretty wow)

      1. So, we can look forward to decades of Felix as a Mariners commentator, mocking young pitchers for their reliance on the strikeout!

    1. tough stretch for the Twins with nemesis Jared Weaver and King Felix in the span of 3 games.

  9. Felix is one of the only guys that's so good, I want to applaud even when my own guys strike out against him. Though I probably wouldn't if my team was better.

    1. Im just glad the Twins only face him once or twice a year.
I would hate him if he was in the same division and have to see him 4,5,6 times

      1. I...might, although I admit I sorta liked Cheeseburger when he was with Cleveland. But any idiot can sell out Cleveland for money, so screw him.

  10. what kind of parade does Seattle have? they have to play a baseball game in the day, thus blacking out everyone because its not of the FOX mothership.

      1. I was just thinking when Florimon was up that it would be nice to have someone on the bench that could pinch-hit for him. Well played, Gardy.

  11. I'm really starting to think that Florimon needs Gold Glove consideration. Dick is right, his footwork around the base was beautiful. Morneau did great, but Florimon did excellent there.

  12. Correia's short start last night is looking worse with each passing extra inning tonight.

  13. Duesning walking a thin line here

    woo, got out of it

how about winning this game now

  14. Hi. I'm here now. Good thing this game is going so long, I get to tune in for once.

  15. I have a lot to do tomorrow. I think it might be time to head to bed, so I can't spend tomorrow saying that I stayed up for nothing in the case that the Twins lose.

            1. Wait, what? That's not supposed to be that way, according to my notes. And it might be very very problematic, given some people's access to internet.

                    1. Mine is sitting in my draft queue, just biding its time. I don't want to send before I know how the rest of the story turns out, I might need to change something.

  16. Oof, good. If the boys had lost this one after I stayed up this late, I'd have been miffed.

  17. That was sweet. We watched a movie, so I turned on the game late but started from the beginning thanks to MLB.tv. Once the Twins tied it up in the ninth, I looked at the option to jump to an inning and saw it was in the 13th, so I skipped to that inning. That was a good decision.
