What a beautiful day. The afternoon was spent changing out mulch around my hops and maintaining the yard. Now it's time for sitting on the deck with a couple of Alaskan Ambers and some grilled chops...

...and hopefully another Twins win.


Kyle Gibson takes on Erik Bedard today. Gibson's had a fairly rough go of it so far. Luckily for him, the 'Stros are (to put it very kindly) a AAA team at this juncture. If he keeps it on the ground and doesn't nibble too much, he should be fine. The Twins batters, on the other hand, might have some trouble with Bedard. He strikes out a lot of folk. It might be a low scoring game...

    Joe Mauer caught all 13 innings of last night's victory, but he insisted he be behind the plate again tonight to catch Gibson, manager Ron Gardenhire said. He's trying to learn more about the rookie's pitch selection, his strengths and weaknesses. He'll bat second for a second straight game.

    False hustle ... Just a compiler ... would be sitting against the Yankees ...
    I can't think of any others. I seem to notice a name showing up in those leaderboards with some regularity.

  7. Brian Dozier has 9 home runs. One more obviously puts in double digits. Only 9 times, by 7 players, in Twins history when a 2Bdude (defined as playing at least 50% of games there) has hit 10+ HR. How many can you name?

    3. I got the three most recent ones, which I don't feel too badly about. Of the other four, I've only heard of one of them before.

        1. Nope, I hadn't. His replacement's name is slightly familiar, but not one I could have come up with on my own.

          1. He was before my time, but I remember his name was brought up a lot when Knobby and Cordova won their ROY trophies.

  8. Kyle Gibson is not very efficient with his pitch count

    but then again, not many starters on this team are.

      1. So all of that contact by opposing batters is unintentional? They're not very good at striking out, then.

    1. Since, you know, they have so many other center fielders sitting on the bench waiting to play.

    2. I'm hoping he pulls a Garza and has a much better second season in the bigs.

      And if he does I'm hoping he doesn't get traded for the 2015 version of Delmon Young.

  19. Hey, gents!

    I got myself a new phone today, went for an 8 mile run, and am now settling down to a dinner of Indian food with Skinny Cow for dessert. Overall, not a bad day.

    1. The Girl is back home today, so I'm making Indian food for dinner (chana dal over rice).

      1. Your Indian food is probably better than mine. Mine was just Amy's, but it was still delicious.

        1. I'm familiar with the brand, but never purchased.

          Amy's Tom Kha Phak, on the other hand, I've had. It is pretty darned good for a canned soup.

            1. Huh. I'll keep my eye out for that. I used to eat a lot of Amy's. I'd be the vegetarian stuff, then grill up a piece of chicken on the Forman and cut it up and mix it all together. I like the vegetable korma a lot. It's good stuff.

                I love the "vegetarian" restaurants that ask "what kind meat you want with that?"

      2. I have never tried Indian food. There is a place in North Mankato that I hear is pretty good. Just never been curious enough to try it.

        3. Don't listen to these guys. There's plenty Indian food that's crap. Also, that particular restaurant is just down the street from me and displaced one of the two best Mexican restaurants I've ever eaten at (not counting Jaleo). But I suppose it really just filled the location vacated by the Mexican place, which may or may not have become the new Mexican place over on Madison drive. I digress... the point is, I've had Indian food I don't love, and some that's been good enough, so if you're interested in trying it out some time, drop me a line and I'll make the half-mile trip over and meet you.

    3. as mentioned above, chana dal and jasmine rice. I bought a case of Blue Moon recently at Costco because they were giving away a "free" "Keep Tahoe Blue" pint glass with the purchase. Plus, it is pretty palatable stuff, for Coors. So I'm about to go pour one.

  27. Day three and this &#%@ing tooth is still barking. Advil knocked it down but not out, at the price of some pretty bad gut rot, so I switched back to Tylenol. Penicillin not yet doing its job with the infection. I'm about ready to get a figure skate and do a frigging Castaway on the damn thing.

    1. Took a couple big shots of Penicillin to the posterior to knock mine down, if I remember right. Only pain I had was from the swelling; the tooth was dead already in my case.

  28. I don't think that was Bedard's fault (as much as Bert is blaming him) because (as Smalley noted) he had to slow down waiting for the feed.

  36. I like how Roy Smalley actually gets Bert to say something about pitching strategy

    like right there, talking about Plouffe sitting on breaking ball, then Bert says that Bedard should throw a hard breaker, and that's exactly what happens.

    • To lighten the mood, I suggested to Radcliff that having a top-5 draft pick again next June can be a good thing. His comeback: outside of having the No. 1 pick -- North Carolina state pitcher Carlos Rodon -- this is a weaker draft compared to most. "It's not a great draft," he said. "It's not real deep."

  55. Like a cat with a mouse, the Twins once again toyed with the Astros, giving them the illusion that they might escape with a victory before finally moving in for the kill. We're still on track for 102-60!
