Daniel Ortiz leads Mayaguez to victory.

MAYAGUEZ 4, PONCE 1 IN PONCE

Twins:  Kennys Vargas (Mayaguez) was 1-for-4 with a double.  Eddie Rosario (Mayaguez) was 0-for-4.  Daniel Ortiz (Mayaguez) was 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs.

Mayaguez:  Hector Hernandez (St. Louis) pitched three shutout innings, giving up one hit and one walk with one strikeout.  Randy Ruiz was 1-for-3 with a home run, his second.  Rene Rivera (San Diego) was 1-for-3 with a walk and a double, driving in one.

Ponce:  Jon Garcia was 2-for-2 with a double.  Yuki Egarashi struck out six in five innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks.

The game:  Ortiz homered in the second to give Mayaguez a 1-0 lead.  Ponce tied it in the fifth, but in the sixth Ruiz and Jerry Sands each homered to make it 3-1.  Ortiz singled and scored on a Rivera double in the ninth for an insurance run.
