I'm not going to be reviewing an old game today. Heck, this isn't the fourth Tuesday either, so I'm not in a rule-following mood. But if you're looking for talk about old games, Death By Troggles has relaunched a new site design and is starting the year looking at old RPGs. Today's game is Final Fantasy II.
Today I want to discuss Skyrim, since my dad forgot I have a baby and decided to get it for me for Christmas. It's the "Legendary Edition" that apparently has all of the add-ons. I know very little about the game, other than it is huge and awesome. I have never played an Elder Scrolls game.
So here are my questions for those who have played it:
1. Does it matter that I've never played an Elder Scrolls game?
2. Has anyone else played this game with a baby in the house?
3. What kind of time commitment is necessary to enjoy it, both in total number of hours, and time per session. I have thirty minutes here and there to play video games, and maybe a couple of times per month I have two to three hours. Would that be enough time to enjoy the game?
For those who haven't played Skyrim, what else are you playing?
I hope Peasant's Quest gets due consideration someday, too.
Ha. I played that game once but I never finished it.
On Skyrim:
1. No, it is completely stand alone.
2. I have.
3. I think so. You'll certainly be playing it for a long, long time. I think I'm over 100 hours in now, though I'm getting close to the end of the main storyline. Of course, I don't have any of the add-ons, so who knows. There aren't really any cutscenes other than the opening, so its not like you'll be sitting around near the end of your session waiting for a spot to save. Just be careful those 30 minutes don't accidentally turn into 2 hours, which is possible because it is awesome.
That reminds me that I really need to get back to playing it. I always put in a crap load of work on a game only to get distracted right at the end. Since I'm looking at picking up Arkham Asylum (finally), I will probably continue that trend with Far Cry 3.
I finished The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds on Christmas Eve. It was completely awesome and one of the best games of the year. After finishing that, I settled on finishing Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon as my next game to finish from my backlog. I'm thinking I should be able to finish that one by the time Bravely Default comes out and keep the 3DS playtime rolling along.
J & I started a co-op playthrough of Super Mario 3D World over the holidays, too. We finished the first 4 worlds together. I've beaten the game myself but it's great enough to be up for playing through it myself. I have not yet finished the post-game content on my own, but that's my plan for the next few nights while I'm still on school break.

I've never had more time for games than when my girls were babies. They're happy to be in the same room, and they don't run around.
I'm playing Borderlands 2 right now, among many, many other games. I got my PS4 and so far have just played the cross-buy games I had gotten on other systems and those given to me for free on PlayStation Plus. On the PS3 I still have a lot of unfinished business, including a fun multiplayer game called ibb and obb where the players have to work together for the other person to advance. Skim is surprisingly good at that one (and Sour Cream isn't terrible). I got the new Ratchet and Clank game and, despite the fact that it's my favorite series, I haven't opened it yet in the hopes of getting somewhere on the others. Then again, I hear this one is short, soooo...
I've never had more time for
gamestelevised sports than when mygirlsfirst two were babies. They're happy to be in the same room, and they don't run around.I had plenty of time during the first six months, but my little one now injures himself nearly daily and needs near constant supervision to keep his head from being black and blue.
Holy smacks, that old? Time flies.
I recently became the owner of a Wii U. I'm really pumped about it. So far the only games I have are Super Mario 3D World and Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (which is a regular Wii game but I never had the chance to play it until now). My interest in video games had really dwindled, to the point where finishing a game often just felt like a chore. I've got a whole bunch of PS3 games that I haven't completed and probably never will. But the Wii U has me excited to play again, in a way that nothing else has in years.
Too bad it's the Wii U.
:-/
You can add me to your NNID if you want! It's zmoney.
I'm stickandballguy. Who'd a thunk it? Santa brought a Wii U to our house: the first gaming console I've ever had (actually, it's my daughter's).
I'm inneapolis. I haven't figured out the whole nintendo online thing yet, but I'll give it a shot once I do.
Yeah, I don't know that I can pick up another Nintendo system until they start securing some more interesting exclusives. They keep nailing it with Mario and Zelda, but I can't buy a system for five or six games.
I would much rather buy a system for five or six games that I really love than buy one for 10-20 games that I only sort-of enjoy.
So would anyone, but I love literally at least a hundred games on the non-Wii system I have from last generation. I play more video games than most anyone you know, so that does color my view of which system to lean toward. If I could only ever play five or six games, I would strongly consider a Nintendo system, but I play that many different games over a couple of days, most of the time.
The Wii U has had a pretty great year, I think. The future is pretty murky but 3D World is an absolute blast and there's a handful of other great games this year (Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, Wind Waker HD, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate). Next year we get Donkey Kong, Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8, Yarn Yoshi, and Smash not counting the stuff that'll be announced Q1 through E3, so there should be a solid amount of stuff to play in the short term future. I more or less bought it with the knowledge that it'll be a box for Nintendo games, and I'm completely fine with that since I appreciate on what their focus is in games which is very different from the bulk of the rest of the industry.
The thing that jumps out at me there is the large number of sequels. I play a decent number of sequels, but they don't sell systems for me.
Wonderful 101 certainly caught my eye, though (and I'd forgotten all about it). Is that an exclusive?
I'm not a huge fan of sequels, but I think Nintendo generally does a pretty good job of making their games mechanically unique enough to be worth playing even if they're in the same series. Wonderful 101 was funded & published by Nintendo, so that one will be an exclusive. Unfortunately pretty much everyone forgot/didn't even know about it since it sold terribly. I'm very curious to see what Platinum does next, and what console it's on. They're a great developer.
Nintendo's fanbase can be their own worst enemy. They seem to be very...comfortable.
How is Skyward Sword? Anyone else here play it? I'm considering trying to pick it up for the Wii... it's been a while, and I meant to get it once before, but it never happened. I've been itching for a good game lately, but am still with just a Wii, and won't be upgrading anytime soon...
I'm not very far into it, but I like it. It's pretty much the first real Wii game that I've played, so the controls are taking some getting used to. But it's Zelda, and that's what's important.
I really enjoyed it. Still haven't finished it. Maybe when the little one decides that midnight is much too late of a bedtime I will finish it.
I've played through it and really liked it. It has fun new elements and the story is enjoyable.
I got an xbox 360 for Christmas, so I've been playing a bit of Halo 4 and Tomb Raider. The wife enjoys watching games, so it's turned into a good activity when the girls go to bed. We also got Tangled for GRZ for the Wii, so I've been playing that with her.
The PS3 has mostly been a Netflix box this month, but I've been finishing up on the main quest in GTA V. This will be the first GTA game I will have ever bothered finishing (I sadly didn't buy GTA IV right away, so my experience in that game was mostly "play it a little bit in the weeks leading up to V so that I'm sufficiently amped up").
Then it's on to The Last of Us.
I may, however, just say screw it and do a Descent run tonight.
Oh, The Last of Us. That game is occasionally terrifying. It's tons of fun.
Beau, I would suggest that you don't install the add-ons, at least Dawnguard, until you're ready to play them. Nothing more annoying than early parts of the game where vampires come in and ransack a town before you're prepared to defend it.
Also, I'm sure that this all got put up a while back, but I either didn't see it or didn't have a PS3 at the time. What's everybody's screen names? I only have Spooky on right now, but just in case anyone's up for some The Show someday and wants to add me, I'm 'nibbish' on both XBL and PSN.
ZackMoney on PSN! Zack Money on XBL. Original, I know.
I think I have you on XBL, I'll add you on PSN tonight.
