Day two of the playoffs. Kennys Vargas basically wins the game by himself.
MAYAGUEZ 4, PONCE 3 IN MAYAGUEZ
Mayaguez: Eddie Rosario (Mayaguez) was 1-for-4 with a run. Kennys Vargas (Mayaguez) was 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs. Daniel Ortiz (Mayaguez) was 0-for-3.
Ponce: Rene Rivera (San Diego) was 2-for-4 with a double and a run. Jose Leon was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Joel Piniero pitched six innings, giving up one run on two hits and one walk.
The game: Vargas led off the second with a home run to put Mayaguez ahead 1-0. The lead held until the fifth, when Ponce scored two on an RBI single by Reymond Fuentes and a sacrifice fly. Another sacrifice fly in the sixth put Ponce up 3-1. In the eighth, Vargas delivered a two-out three-run homer to give Mayaguez a 4-3 lead. Ponce got a leadoff single in the ninth but did not advance the runner past first base.
CAGUAS 9, CAROLINA 5 IN CAROLINA
Caguas: Roberto Pena (Houston) was 2-for-5 with a grand slam and two runs. Juan Silva (Cincinnati) was 2-for-5 with three runs. Fernando Hernandez pitched five innings, giving up one run on one hit and four walks with three strikeouts.
Carolina: Osvaldo Martinez (Dodgers) was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run, driving in two. Ruben Gotay (Cincinnati) was 1-for-3 with a walk and a double, scoring once and driving in one. David Kopp pitched 2.2 innings, allowing an unearned run on no hits and no walks with one strikeout.
The game: A balk scored the first run of the game, putting Caguas ahead 1-0 in the first. In the second, RBI singles by Luis Mateo and Miguel Abreu made it 3-0 Caguas. Each team scored once in the fifth and Caguas added another run in the sixth to make it 5-1. Pena's grand slam came in the eighth and put the game out of reach. Carolina did not quit, scoring twice in the eighth and twice in the ninth, but they did not get the tying run up to bat.
