Day three of the playoffs. A sacrifice fly makes the difference in Mayaguez. Only two of the six Ponce runs scored on hits.
MAYAGUEZ 3, CAROLINA 2 IN CAROLINA
Twins: Kennys Vargas (Mayaguez) was 0-for-3 with two walks and a run. Eddie Rosario (Mayaguez) was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Daniel Ortiz (Mayaguez) was used as a reserve and was 0-for-1 with a walk.
Mayaguez: Luis Figueroa was 3-for-4 with a walk and a home run. Irving Falu (Milwaukee) was 3-for-5. Randy Fontanez (Mets) retired all seven batters he faced, striking out two.
Carolina: Enrique Hernandez (Houston) was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Osvaldo Martinez (Dodgers) was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run. Eliecer Navarro (Pittsburgh) pitched five shutout innings, allowing four hits and one walk with four strikeouts.
The game: Carolina scored a run on a double play in the first to go ahead 1-0. That lead held up until the sixth, when Figueroa homered to tie it. Later in the inning, Rosario singled in Vargas to put Mayaguez ahead 2-1. Carolina tied it at two in the eighth on Hernandez' RBI double. In the ninth, Mayaguez scored on a sacrifice fly to go ahead 3-2. Carolina could only get a man on first with two out in the bottom of the ninth.
PONCE 6, CAGUAS 1 IN CAGUAS
Ponce: Jonathan Mota (Cubs) was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two. Reymond Fuentes (San Diego) was 3-for-5 with two runs. Logan Williamson pitched six shutout innings, giving up two hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
Caguas: Rey Navarro was 2-for-4 with a run. Aaron Bates was 1-for-3 with a walk and a double, driving in one. Derek Blacksher struck out two in 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and no walks.
The game: Ponce got two runs on an error in the first to go ahead 2-0. In the third, Ponce got one on a bases-loaded walk and another on a force out to go up 4-0. They added two more in the fourth on an RBI double by Mota and a run-scoring triple by Jeff Dominguez. The lone Caguas run came in the eighth on Bates' RBI double.
