From her album Parts of Speech. As talked about in last week's FMD, the hip-hop songs are great while the ballads are meh. This is a great song and one of my faves from the album.
Dessa's vocals aren't the easiest to hear in this version but I thought it was a pretty good representation of her live show. After the break I included a version with easier-to-follow the vocals.
Hey, I was going to use that tiny desk concert as the second video in my post! Thief! I do love that tiny desk concert, though.
I actually like some of the ballads. That being said, the combination of the ballads and the hip-hop songs don't make for an especially coherent album.
I'm going to confess that I have virtually no opinion on Dessa. In fact, I feel that way about most of the Doomtree collective. Brother Ali is probably my favorite, with a handful of Atmosphere songs working for me, but... for the most part, it all just sounds the same, and at this point fails to stand out. I know I'm supposed to love them and be loyal to the MN artists and what not, but... meh. I feel just "meh" about Dessa.
But.... She's hot. And raps. And is from Minnesota! Did I say she's hot? :o)
Not that it really matters, and in fact, you basically said as much by including them with the "...it all just sounds the same, and at this point fails to stand out." but Brother Ali and Atmosphere are not part of Doomtree and don't record with Doomtree Records.
As for Dessa, I like her (and Doomtree) just fine.
Well, shows what I know. But seriously, they all sound very similar to me.
I saw her last March at the U of M in Morris. It was a weird being a 29 year old watching college kids walking around, but Dessa was worth it. She puts on a very good show.
