Venezuelan View: Games of 1/8

Day seven of the playoffs.  Lots of free baseball.  Daring baserunning wins it for Magallanes.  A walkoff homer takes care of things in La Guaira.

MAGALLANES 6, ANZOATEGUI 5 IN ANZOATEGUI (13 INNINGS)

Twins:  Eduardo Escobar (Anzoategui) was 1-for-5 with an RBI.  Deolis Guerra (Magallanes) retired both batters he faced.

Magallanes:  Ramon Hernandez (Kansas City) was 1-for-6 with a grand slam, his second homer.  Frank Diaz was 1-for-5 with a home run.  Amalio Diaz pitched three shutout innings, giving up two hits and no walks with two strikeouts.

Anzoategui:  Cory Aldridge was 2-for-6 with a home run, his third.  Gorkys Hernandez (Kansas City) was 3-for-6 with two runs.  Pedro Rodriguez pitched 2.2 perfect innings with one strikeout.

The game:  Escobar singled in a run in the second and a run scored on a double play in the third to put Anzoategui ahead 2-0 after three.  Jose Castillo drove in two with a single in the fifth to make it 4-0.  Magallanes came back in the sixth, with Hernandez hitting a two-out grand slam to tie it up and Diaz making it back-to-back homers to put Magallanes ahead 5-4.  It looked like that might hold up, but Aldridge homered in the eighth to tie it.  It stayed tied until the thirteenth, when Adonis Garcia (Yankees) somehow scored from second on a force out to put Magallanes ahead 6-5.  Anzoategui went down in order in the thirteenth and did not get a hit after the tenth.

LA GUAIRA 8, ZULIA 7 IN LA GUAIRA (12 INNINGS)

Twins:  Oswaldo Arcia (Zulia) was 1-for-6 with a run and an RBI.  Miguel Sulbaran (Zulia) retired the only man he faced.

Zulia:  Freddy Galvis (Philadelphia) was 3-for-6 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.  Ender Inciarte (Arizona) was 2-for-5 with a walk and two RBIs.  Silvino Bracho (Arizona) struck out three in 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and no walks.

La Guaira:  Alex Cabrera was 1-for-2 with a home run and a walk, scoring twice.  C. J. Retherford was 2-for-3 with a walk and three RBIs.  Marlon Arias pitched three shutout innings, allowing one hit and no walks with one strikeout.

The game:  Ernesto Mejia (Atlanta) doubled in two runs in the first to put Zulia ahead 2-0.  La Guaira tied it with two in the second and took the lead in the third on back-to-back homers by Joe Thurston and Cabrera at 4-2.  Inciarte singled in two in the fifth to tie the score at four.  RBI singles by Jose Pirela (Yankees) and Arcia put Zulia ahead 6-4 in the seventh, but a passed ball and Retherford's two-run single in the bottom of the seventh gave La Guaira the lead back at 7-6.  Galvis singled in a run in the eighth to tie the score at seven.  It stayed tied until the twelfth, when Rene Reyes led off with a walkoff homer for La Guaira.
