Puerto Rican Publication: Games of 1/11

Day seven of the playoffs.  A huge day for Eddie Rosario.  Errors make the difference in Carolina.

MAYAGUEZ 10, PONCE 5 IN MAYAGUEZ

Twins:  Eddie Rosario (Mayaguez) was 5-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs.  Kennys Vargas (Mayaguez) was 1-for-5 with an RBI.  Daniel Ortiz (Mayaguez) was 0-for-4.

Ponce:  Benji Gonzalez (Pittsburgh) was 3-for-5 with a double and two runs.  Henry Ramos (Boston) was 1-for-4 with a walk and a home run,  Logan Williamson pitched 5.1 innings, giving up two runs on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

Mayaguez:  Dee Gordon (Dodgers) was 3-for-3 with two walks and three runs.  Luis Figueroa was 2-for-3 with a walk and two doubles, scoring once and driving in three.  Irving Falu (Milwaukee) was 2-for-4 with two runs.

The game:  It was close most of the way.  Jeff Dominguez singled in a run for Ponce in the first.  Mayaguez tied it in the second on a Luis Montanez RBI single.  Each team scored once in the third.  Ramos homered in the fourth to make it 3-2 Ponce and an error brought home two in the fifth to make it 5-2.  Mayaguez came back in the seventh, getting RBI singles by Rosario and Randy Ruiz and a two-run double by Figueroa to take a 6-5 lead.  Mayaguez got four more in the eighth to put the game out of reach.  The last Ponce hit was a leadoff single by Gonzalez in the fifth.

CAGUAS 2, CAROLINA 1 IN CAROLINA

Caguas:  Neftali Soto (Cincinnati) was 2-for-3 with a walk and a double, scoring once.  Edgardo Baez was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Fernando Hernandez struck out six in 5.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits and six walks.

Carolina:  Carlos Corporan (Houston) was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Eliecer Navarro (Pittsburgh) pitched 6.1 innings, allowing two unearned runs on two hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

The game:  Carolina scored in the fourth without a hit, getting two walks, a ground out, and a sacrifice fly.  It stayed 1-0 until the seventh when an error, a double, and an intentional walk filled the bases with one out.  Another error tied the score, and with two out Baez singled in the go-ahead run for Caguas.  Carolina got a man on in each of the last three innings but could not advance anyone past second.

  1. At least Rosario doesn't have to worry about limited rest until the minor league season begins.
