Venezuelan View: Games of 1/11

Day ten of the playoffs.  Small ball was big for Magallanes.  Petit was big for Caracas.

MAGALLANES 2, ZULIA 1 IN MAGALLANES

Twins:  Oswaldo Arcia (Zulia) was 0-for-3.  Miguel Sulbaran (Zulia) gave up a hit to the only man he faced, but was not charged with a run.

Zulia:  Jose PIrela (Yankees) was 1-for-3 with a walk and a double.  Luis Ugueto hit a pinch-hit home run.  Jason Lane (San Diego) pitched 5.2 innings, giving up an unearned run on six hits and one walk with two strikeouts.

Magallanes:  Mario Lisson (San Francisco) was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run.  Endy Chavez (Seattle) was 2-for-4 with a double.  Dustin Richardson pitched 6.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk with three strikeouts.

The game:  It was scoreless until the sixth, when Lisson doubled, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a passed ball.  A squeeze bunt in the seventh put Magallanes ahead 2-0.  Ugueto hit his home run with two out in the ninth.  It was followed by a double by Pirela, who took third on a wild pitch, but a strikeout ended the game.

CARACAS 2, ANZOATEGUI 1 IN ANZOATEGUI

Twins:  Eduardo Escobar (Anzoategui) was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

Caracas:  Gregorio Petit was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.  Bobby Abreu was 2-for-3 with a walk and two doubles.  Tim Corcoran pitched 3.2 innings, giving up one run on five hits and one walk.

Anzoategui:  Oscar Salazar was 2-for-4.  Gorkys Hernandez (Kansas City) was 1-for-3 with a walk and a double.  Alejandro Martinez pitched seven innings, allowing one run on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

The game:  Anzoategui opened the scoring in the fourth on an Escobar RBI single.  Caracas tied it in the fifth on a Petit homer.  It was tied until the ninth, when Petit delivered a two-out RBI single.  Anzoategui went down in order in the ninth and did not get a hit after the sixth.
