Day two of the semi-finals. Lots of home runs.
NAVOJOA 9, MEXICALI 6 IN MEXICALI
Navojoa: Carlos Orrantia was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and three runs. Jon Weber was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Luis Fonseca was 2-for-5 with a home run, his third.
Mexicali: Xorge Carrillo (Mets) was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Russell Branyan was 1-for-2 with three walks and a two-run homer, his second. Ben Guez (Detroit) was 1-for-1 with four walks and three runs.
The game: Fonesca homered in the first to give Navojoa a 1-0 lead. Branyan hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to make it 2-1 Mexicali, but Navojoa got the lead right back in the second on a Wes Bankston homer, a run-scoring error, and Orrantia's two-run homer. Mexicali scored in the third to cut the lead to 5-3, but Weber's two-run single in the fourth made it 7-3. John Lindsey homered in the fifth to increase the lead to 8-3, but Mexicali got back-to-back homers from Carrillo and Brad Snyder (Texas) in the bottom of the fifth to make it 8-5 and cut the lead to 8-6 when Carrillo hit an RBI single in the sixth. That was as close as they would come. Weber singled in another run in the eighth to make it 9-6. Mexicali loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the eighth, but did not get a ball out of the infield the rest of the game.
LOS MOCHIS 10, HERMOSILLO 3 IN HERMOSILLO
Los Mochis: Brian Burgamy was 4-for-4 with a walk, a double, and a home run, scoring twice and driving in three. Sebastian Valle (Philadelphia) was 3-for-5 with a double and a home run, scoring twice. Jesus Arredondo (Dodgers) was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.
Hermosillo: Zelous Wheeler was 3-for-3 with a walk. Heber Gomez was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer. Jerry Owens was 2-for-4.
The game: In the second, Hermosillo got a two-run homer from Yancarlo Angulo, a solo shot by Valle, and an RBI single by Jason Bourgeois to go ahead 4-0. Hermosillo came back with two in the bottom of the second on a Gomez two-run homer. Hermosillo got the two runs back in the fourth when Valle doubled, Arredondo doubled him in, and Juan Carlos Gamboa singled in Arredondo. Each team scored once in the sixth, and Hermosillo closed the book with a three-run eighth.
