We use Pete's performance on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in the Vietnam course I co-teach. We supply the context – Pete's blacklisting in the McCarthy era; his subsequent ban from broadcast TV; how controversial this performance was, even for those who may have been changing their minds about the war – but I think it's still a stretch for them to appreciate how significant this performance was considering how different their media culture and landscape is from the 1960s.

Right. It's hard for me to remember the media landscape before Facebook and Twitter took control and everyone had their 15 minutes of fame. Mr. Seeger nearly went to jail for exercising his right to free speech. I find it incredibly hard to understand the complexity of that period of our history.
