March 16, 2014: Bad Luck of the Irish

Yesterday three people came in to my store decked out in their St. Patrick's day regalia, green from head to toe. I asked what made them start two days early, and horrible realization washed over their faces as it dawned on them that they'd confused the Ides of March with their favorite drinking holiday. Whoops.

  1. ND State Class A championship last night (two classes, A and B). Fargo Davies, which didn't exist four years ago, won the state title. Their star guard scored 108 points in the three games and was named Mr. Basketball. His brother, a sophomore, plays (and was the best player) for Fargo Oak Grove, which won the State B title.

  2. Happy Selection Sunday! Here's to hoping GW gets sent to either Milwaukee or St. Louis so I can try to make the drive.

    1. I remember when Selection Sunday was like a holiday. Watching basketball all day, then filling out brackets all night.

    2. GW seems likely to be an 8/9. That means they have a 25% chance of St. Louis (where Wichita St will be a 1), San Diego (Arizona is the 1), Orlando (Florida), or ??? (depends on the last 1 - Raleigh if they give it to Duke, Buffalo if Villanova, St. Louis again if Kansas).

Milwaukee would be an option if they somehow get bumped up to a 7 (or, more likely, get bumped down to a 10) because Wisconsin and Michigan will both likely be 2's.

      1. Wichita State won't be in St. Louis. The committee doesn't want them in the Final Four. I expect them to have Syracuse and Michigan State in their bracket.

    3. Phil Martelli is a scumbag and don't let the media tell you otherwise. He is much, much, MUCH worse than Kevin Slowey.

        1. St. Joe's won the A10 and then CBS spent a whole bunch of time fawning over how great a person he is. He's an absolute dirtbag. This is the tip of the iceberg.

          1. Schools should not be able to prohibit transferring. If they can pull scholarships, kids should be able to move to different schools freely.

              1. But seriously. The NCAA is just rife with hypocrisy. Coaches bolt all the time, buying out contracts. And yet a kid, who is prohibited from negotiating for his market value on the front end is also punished if he discovers the school/program is a bad fit (or the coach who recruited him bolts for greener pastures).

    4. Guess what George Washington is doing?

Now if I could only find a way to get to Raleigh for less than $550 + ticket + hotel.

        1. The upside for me is that I paid significantly less attention this year than I have in a long, long time. It was a good year to tune out. Besides, the Hoyas just would have choked in the tournament anyway.

      1. GW's getting Kevin Harlan, too. If they don't get the dream team of Raftery and Verne, Harlan's a great consolation prize compared to Jim Nantz.

          1. Nope, he's paired with Len Elmore for the game. I can't wait for him to tell Zeek Armwood, "Throw it down, Big Fella!"

      1. I read that tweet as sarcastic (and directed, albeit poorly, at the management of the Twins), but I don't follow him enough to know better.

  3. The Sully Buttes Chargers finished third in the state girls basketball tournament, defeating Hanson 48-41. This week, the Potter County Battlers (the other high school in my parish) plays in the state boys basketball tournament.

  4. My sister-in-law is scanning pictures for my mother. My brother just texted me this one:

That's me at 18 years old with some dude. It doesn't look like I was going to be able to play LB at Penn State. A little skinny for that.

        1. you are the sum of your experiences. If you talked to him, you'd cease to exist. #temporalparadoxes

    1. Plus, at 18 years of age, you were already far too old to catch the attention of their defensive coordinator.

  5. Had to listen to a Fighting Whioux fan babble on about how tough Weber St. is this morning (they beat UND by 21 last night to win the Big Sky). I told him that they were gonna be a 15 seed. Wrong. They are a 16 seed.

      1. High Point made it because the NIT automatically enters teams that win their regular-season conference title but do not win their conference tournament, and don't receive NCAA at-large bids.
