  1. Time to revive the Wild Playoff Watch?

Two weeks to go in the season. The Wild are currently in the 7th spot in the conference, 4 points above 9th place Dallas. They have 8 games to play.

    1. St. Louis - clinched playoff spot
    2. San Jose - clinched playoff spot
    3. Anaheim - clinched playoff spot
    4. Chicago - 99 points (clinches playoff spot with a Dallas loss today)
    5. Colorado - 98 points (clinches playoff spot with either 1) a win, 2) a point + Dallas loss, 3) Dallas regulation loss today)
    6. Los Angeles - 92 points
    7. Minnesota - 85 points
    8. Phoenix - 84 points
    --------------------------
    9. Dallas - 81 points
    10. Vancouver - 79 points
    11. Winnipeg - 75 points
    12. Nashville - 75 points
    13. Calgary - 69 points (eliminated from playoffs today if Phoenix wins in OT/SO over Minnesota)

    Relevant games today:
Minnesota @ Phoenix -- It would be nice to get some cushion between the Wild and the 8 spot.
Dallas @ St. Louis -- The Blues have been the best team in the NHL this season. Hopefully they keep it up tonight.
    San Jose @ Colorado
    Anaheim @ Vancouver
    Winnipeg @ Los Angeles

    1. The Stars are on the local Fox Sports down here, so I've heard quite a bit about them and the Wild vying for one of the last spots. The announcers have been pulling for the Wild to trip up, of course.

    2. From one who hasn't caught much hockey in the last several years:

With those additions last year, why aren't they better than this? What's missing?

      1. The Wild have scored 183 goals, same as Vancouver. They are last in the Western Conference in goals scored. Dont know how to fix it, but that seems to be a problem.

  2. I went to the Wolves game last night. Wolves up by 40 in the third quarter and no Shabazz sighting until the last five minutes. Isn't that the precise game in this type of season where you see if he can play? Instead, we see Moute out there. We already know he can't play.

    1. The Lakers looked as interested in play that game as a kid going to school in the middle of summer.

    1. Someday but not that soon.
In the attic, I've got an old adjustable-size Kielty that did two treks at Philmont (and the training leading to it). I'll let HPR use it. (Or CER if she wants something.)
THR (my dad) bought a surplus Army pack for Philmont, as it was what he was familiar with from Vietnam.

      1. I know it's hard to buy new stuff when you have a perfectly good backpack somewhere in the attic but you will be shocked how much lighter the new gear these days. Also frames that fit the contour and shape of your body. If the kids get into hiking and backpacking I wouldn't doubt if they get the new gear and you go old school pack just like your dad did.

P.S. I was disappointed the boy never made it to Philmont as I definitely would have gone on that trip. They went to Seabase instead.

        1. You've told me that and I have since told HPR that he can do whatever high adventure he wants so long as it's Philmont.
Why else did I have a son?

  3. If anyone's checked in with the bracket, you can see my regular pattern.
Leading after the first day and first round, now in the bottom 20% with 7 games to come, and at most one win left.

  5. Not only did Chelsea lose today, it was to Crystal Place. By a score of 1-0. On a WPoHRJT* own-goal.

    1. And Palace should have had at least one (if not two, they never showed a very good replay of the first tackle by Cahill) penalty plus sent a couple just wide. Palace didn't fluke into the win.

  6. I'm back on the grid ( for a few minutes). Kubel AND Bartlett! SI predicting 100 losses! Cruising is fun! Plane is delayed! Sunburn! Miss SBG snorkled! Diamond clears waivers! Worst spring training record in almost 20 years! Mickey and I talked like pirates! Argh!

      1. He gets a $5 million signing bonus, of which $2 million is due within 30 days of the contract's approval and $3 million by Oct. 15. Trout's salaries are $5.25 million in 2015, $15.25 million in 2016, $19.25 million in 2017 and $33.25 million in each of the final three seasons.

And becomes a free agent when he is 28 years old. Its a win-win-win situation

  7. Roy Smalley was the guest speaker at the local SABR chapter meeting in a church basement in Minneapolis.

He talked a lot about the comeback game when he was playing for USC against Dave Winfield and the Gophers in the 1973 World Series. Said it seemed like Winfield's arm was halfway between the mound and home plate when he delivered the ball, and that they were beaten until the U of M tried two bunt singles in the late innings and up 7-0. Apparently that fired Fred Lynn up, enough to start the rally.

Smalley also talked about the 1987 World Series - his conversation with the official scorer (Howard Sinker, who was one of three assigned to the game) who credited an error to the first baseman on a play Roy thought should have been a double ("I wasn't belligerent or anything until he got snippy with me, then I became belligerent. That's all I have to say about that.") and how TK had the foresight to get Smalley an at bat in garbage time against Worrell early in the series with an eye on higher leverage situations later in the series (Roy drew a walk against Worrell with the score tied in the bottom of the sixth in Game 7).

Some funny Billy Martin stories mixed in. Oh, and Hrbek made a recording of Gaetti breaking wind in his sleep that was quite popular in the clubhouse in 1987.

  8. Is there a way basketball can do their reviews quicker? does it have to be the refs on the floor? It really kills the momentum of the last part of a game (not that the last part of basketball games are free flowing)
