July 17, 2014: The New Place Across the Street

A month or two ago my wife and I finally decided to try the place across the street and we loved it. We walked over with the kids last night to find out it closed on the 13th. Fantastic.

  1. Topps' 2014 Allen & Ginter set was just released; what had been a robust collection of Twins in the past is now only three in the base set: Arcia, Mauer, and Nolasco. Meanwhile, among the non-baseball people included (a feature of Allen & Ginter every year, along with "breaking the code") is this card:
    Chuck Klosterman
with an autographed card (pictured) and "jersey" card inserts

    1. I'm definitely picking one of those up. Kinda odd that you have to call to order it.

    1. just came here to say pretty much the same thing. Boo.

Last month, in an interview with JournalStar.com, Winter, who released more than 25 albums in his career but never won a Grammy, was asked what he'd like his legacy to be.

He replied: "I just hope I'm remembered as a good blues musician."

  2. I have a movie idea I would like to see. Satire/dark comedy showing human resource employees just messing with prospective employees. Maybe a little bit Heathers, a little bit In the Company of Men.

    1. The "old" 9:30 Club was located right around the corner from the FBI building. Once in 1987 around 2:00a after seeing a show (alas can't remember which one), I went up and peed on the FBI Building. Obviously security isn't what it is now so one could literally go right up to the building. Unfortunatly for me, there was some security and I was hassled by a couple of Federal Agents. I basically pled young, drunk, and stupid and they let me go with basically nothing more than giving me the stink eye.

      1. So lots of interns spend their summers staying in the dorms on GW's campus. When I was still working there about 10 years ago, campus security told me the story of a drunken intern who had to be fished out of the fountain in front of the World Bank in the middle of the night. That's not the place where I would want to be drawing the ire of security.

        1. I was in D.C. from 1986-1988. There is a vast gulf in the security since the 1995 OKC bombing and 9/11 attacks compared to that time. It's amazing where the 1986 me could go and how close one could get to the powers that be without going so much as a metal detector or pat down.

            1. I do not recall seeing you

That's what we called in the business "plausible deniability."

    2. A few of them look like the lazy siblings of the Multi Foods Tower.
My favorite part is the exposed wires on HHS white blocks.

  3. Another Malaysia Airlines jet has gone down, this time over Ukraine. The 777 was last reported at a cruising altitude of 10,000 meters and was carrying 280 passengers and 15 crew from Amsterdam en route to Kuala Lumpur. The Ukrainian interior minister has claimed the jet was shot down by a ground-to-air missle, but that's very unconfirmed and should be treated as dubious.

    1. Obviously there are a lot of facts to be sorted out here, but at the very least, this certainly won't aid in any hasty resolution to the situation on the ground. That, and I'm not flying Malaysian in the near future.

    1. Good stuff. It's hard for Perk to be more likeable than he already is, but being nervous to meet Joe Pos does the trick.

      1. Perkins would make a good VP/ambassador between the clubhouse & the Twins' stats dept (assuming it ever amounts to much) when he retires.

  4. Okay, I'm pumped about finally picking up a card with this autograph...

ID the AU -- which Twins player (current or former or future) calls this his signature?

    1. I'm not at peace with it, but I've accepted it as nearly inevitable at this point. Managing to get Wiggins would be good, getting Waiters would be nice, accepting Bennett as part of the deal is so-so.

Question- can the Cavs trade Brendan Haywood, like this article says? They just traded for him a couple days ago.

      1. If they can get that deal, I am ok with it. That Boston trip makes it hard to like Love. Although Glen Taylor makes it hard to like the Wolves.

I want to see Ricky with the four best athletes they can find and just run constantly. They might not win enough but they would be fun.

        1. I want to see Ricky with the four best athletes they can find and just run constantly.

Yep, me too. That would be fun to watch.

    2. I'm loving Cavs fans losing their minds over the idea of trading Wiggins, who might some day maybe be as good as Love is today, for Love. "THE WOLVES NEED TO THROW IN DIENG! OR SOME DRAFT PICKS!" Come on. Wolves fans have suffered enough. You lose your superstar, get 3 of the next 4 top picks in the draft, and get him back. The Wolves are going to lose their superstar and... go into their 3rd rebuild. Come on guys.

    1. Yea, that is pretty ridiculous. Almost asc ridiculous as LA and Orange Counties' having increased water usage in june over last year. And people wonder why there are north-south conflicts in this state.

  5. So, I have been home sick most of the week. Saw the doc today, who immediately suggested I might have pertussis. And of course, no record of any recent booster immunizations. Oops.

We are in the midst of a pretty major pertussis outbreak locally. Thankfully, it is treatable with antibiotics. But check your immunization records. You don't want this. And you don't want to be responsible for spreading it to some baby.
