hey, Rhu_Ru! Is there any market value to SD Padres' cards labeled as "Washington, Nat'l League"?? I have at least one of those from 1974.
YES
Not sure they're huge, but they're worth something. You can get the Winfield rookie for $20 and McCovey for $10 on eBay, and the rest for $3-$5 or so I suppose
So we're talking a couple of bombers or sixers, or at least a pint pour, depending on how many and which cards Doc has? Nice.
Today's lesson (repeated ad infinitum): Collect baseball cards for fun, not profit.
I'm pretty sure I have a Vicente Romo. I want to say that I have a McCovey as well, but that could be wishful thinking. No chance that I'm selling them any time soon, however.
I am not sure if I told this story or not.
Was working at a drug store in college. They had cards for sale at their crazy days sale. I bought the whole box of 1992 Topps (with gum). I still have them unopened. I told my son that he can have them for his tenth birthday.
He won't know many of the players but he's already looking forward to opening all those packs.
1992 bubble gum! Reminds me of this TNG episode. Roger Maris card with bubble gum scent.
Flip quotes as reported by Souhan. If more of Jim's pieces were constructed like this one, I wouldn't actively avoid his reporting nearly as much. Most telling (and encouraging to my way of thinking) about Flip's expectations for the season:
"We made a decision on J.J., and there are some people, even on our staff, saying, `Hey, J.J. is going to help us win two or three more games,’" Saunders said. "I had to say, `Listen, when we made the decision to trade Love, that was the direction we chose. If we’re going to try to shortchange that, we’re going to hurt ourselves in the long run. This season is about going through the process. It’s about developing and blending the players together. It’s about finding out what we have in our young guys, what they have to work on in the next year to be where we need to be.'"
They have other sources of supply shipments. My heart goes out to the students whose experiments onboard didn't yield the results they were hoping for.
I figured as much - was being glib. Hadn't heard about the student experiments.
Well, it was a play on Ender, but I enjoy that songduo both.
Dido.
joe maddon to become cubs manager. story up soon at @CBSSports— Jon Heyman (@JonHeymanCBS) October 29, 2014
If the Twins weren't going to get him either way, this is probably the best PR for them that Maddon be hired by someone else before they announce their hire. It gives the appearance that Maddon was already going elsewhere.
maybe the Twins should hire Rick Renteria.
It gives the appearance that Maddon was already going elsewhere.
Which he most likely was.
Twins did talk to the "Maddon camp." I'm guessing to his agent and not directly to Maddon. They were probably already talking with Cubs and were just working out the details.
I'm gonna miss the first 3-4 innings because I don't get off work until 8. Booooo
And now I'm off unexpectedly*, so sports bar here I come.
*Manager changed the schedule without telling anyone and I was actually off all day. Which I didn't find out til I was there, of course.
Random thing I learned while surfing around b-r this morning: Rickey Henderson stole 66 bases in 1998. He was 39 years old.
Yeah, he was a reckless base stealer in 1982. He got smarter.
He was 25 for 32 when he was 42
I think that recklessness on the basepaths comes from Billy Martin being the manager of those Oakland A's teams
Alex Gordon and his amazing, mutilated rookie card
great stuff.

Good read. Thanks for the link.

Antares Orbital Sciences (rocket) explosion...ISS won't be getting supplies in a timely manner.

the explosion was detected by Doppler radar
One of our best college friends is an engineer for Orbital. I'm sure the mood in the office today isn't so good.
Today in MPLS real estate: Andrew Wiggins.
so he's a west Ender?
Watch out for those West End Girls, Rookie.
Well, it was a play on Ender, but I enjoy that

How Beer Saved the World.
Every way. Duh.
Twins transaction: Virgil Vasquez has retired and will become pitching coach of the GCL Twins.
