Mexican Matchups: Games of November 5

An eight-run inning is all Culican needs in game one.  Figueroa figures out a way for Obregon to win game two.  Shutouts for Jalisco and Mexicali.

CULIACAN 8, OBREGON 4 IN CULIACAN (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Obregon:  Sergio Contreras was 2-for-3 with a run.  Jake Smolinski (Texas) was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Sergio Mora pitched 3.1 scoreless innings, giving up a walk with one strikeout.

Culiacan:  Rico Noel (San Diego) was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Joey Meneses (Atlanta) was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.  Rodrigo Lopez pitched five innings, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

The game:  Culiacan scored eight runs in the first inning and it was more than enough.  Three of the runs scored on a two-out error.

OBREGON 5, CULICAN 3 IN CULIACAN (GAME 2--9 INNINGS--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Obregon:  Agustin Murillo was 3-for-4 with a walk and three runs.  Donald Lutz (Cincinnati) was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer, his fifth.  Rolando Valdez struck out five in 5.2 innings, giving up two runs on six hits and two walks.

Culiacan:  Oscar Robles was 3-for-3 with a home run (his second) and a walk.  Arturo Rodriguez was 1-for-4 with a home run, his fourth.  Arnold Leon (Oakland) struck out eight in five innings, allowing one run on eight hits and a walk with one strikeout.

The game:  Lutz hit a two-run homer in the seventh to put Obregon up 3-2, but an error allowed Culiacan to tie it in the bottom of the seventh and send the game to extra innings.  Jose Augusto Figueroa hit a two-out two-run double in the ninth for what turned out to be the winning runs for Obregon.

HERMOSILLO 7, LOS MOCHIS 3 IN HERMOSILLO

Los Mochis:  Sandy Madera was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Ernesto Molinet was 1-for-2 with two walks and a run.  Oswaldo Pacheco struck out three in 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and two walks.

Hermosillo:  Yunesky Sanchez was 1-for-3 with a triple and a walk, scoring once and driving in three.  Luis Alfonso Garcia was 1-for-2 with a double and two walks, scoring once and driving in one.  Roy Corcoran (Dodgers) pitched five innings, allowing one run on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  A five-run third broke a 1-1 tie and put Hermosillo in control of the game.  Sanchez had a three-run triple in the inning.

JALISCO 5, MAZATLAN 0 IN JALISCO

Mazatlan:  Jesus Castillo was 2-for-4 with a double.  Francisco Villa (Dodgers) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits.

Jalisco:  Jesus Lopez was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Edson Garcia was 2-for-4 with a run.  Graham Godfrey (Arizona) pitched seven shutout innings, allowing six hits and one walk with five strikeouts.

The game:  Jalisco got one in the first, two in the third, and two in the fourth.  Mazatlan put men on first and third with none out in the seventh, but their last nine men were retired.

MEXICALI 9, NAVAJOA 0 IN NAVOJOA

Mexicali:  Walter Ibarra (Dodgers) was 4-for-4 with a double and three runs.  Dave Sappelt was 3-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Edgar Osuna pitched six shutout innings, giving up three hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

Navojoa:  Genaro Andrade was 1-for-2 with a walk.  Irving Jimenez struck out three in 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two walks.

The game:  A six-run eighth took the lead from 3-0 to 9-0.  The first two men went out in the inning, but a double, five singles, a walk, and two errors plated the runs.
