November 9, 2014: There It Is

After successfully avoiding sickness for two and a half weeks as it keeps worming its way through my wife and kids, I woke up with something today and can't swallow. Argh.

  1. Snowmaggedon, here we come. I'm trying to buy a used snowblower today, my old one's leaking gear oil pretty badly now and I don't have time to replace an impeller shaft seal before the snow flies.

    1. Linds' brother found us a nice used one for $200. It's usually a $700 unit, but the gear box is stuck in third. I started it and it absolutely purrs. I think I can deal with getting the gears unstuck (and running it I third until then), rather than using the horrible single stage, non self-propelled blower we had last year.

        1. Just mowed the lawn for the last time this year - lawnmower put away, and snowblower now in it's strategic place (next to the car, but don't need to move the car to get at it).
Now need to get snowblower gas container topped off and get bags of salt (because Father's Almanac).

Am having a hard time finding anyone with any stock of firewood. Might have to go down the street and pull wood off of a fence (picture NBB in Dr. Zhivago coat).

          1. One advantage to being a pastor: someone from the trustees comes over with a tractor and a scoop and takes all the snow away. I might have to shovel a tiny bit right next to the garage, but that's it.

          2. I raked some leaves today, decided lawn could wait a few more days for a mow. Wearing shorts and a tee-shirt....

      1. Well, it took some time but I scored. There was a 9hp Craftsman for $200 that I was chasing but it got sold out from under me. Instead, I picked up a ten year old Murray 2-stage with a 5hp Tecumseh, 22" path, 6 forward speeds and 2 reverse for just 50 bucks (priced to move, the guy just got a brand new lawn tractor with snow blower and wanted it out of the garage). All the leaves are up and hauled away, the driveway markers are up, the deck is cleared of furniture, all lawn gear is stowed, and the minivan has 4 new tires. The Camry needs new rubber too, but that'll have to wait for the next storm.

  2. some of you may find this Sac Bee article on nursing homes of interest.

One nursing home chain operating in California racked up abuse complaints last year at a pace seven times the statewide rate.

A large competitor placed one in every 15 of its long-term residents in restraints.

Still another corporate giant whose nursing homes dominate the Sacramento region experienced high nursing staff turnover at 90 percent of its facilities.

If you’re a consumer anguishing over the placement of a loved one needing full-time nursing, how would you know this?

    The short answer: You wouldn’t.

    1. This information is all public. Finding them might be tough if you don't where to look, but these stats (and reports) are available for every nursing home at Medicare's website.

  3. I just ordered a replacement OEM passenger door mirror assembly for my car. I'll be replacing it next weekend once it arrives. Hopefully I don't need to call Twayn in a panic when my door is in a million pieces.

    1. Door mirrors usually aren't too hard, you can usually do it all from outside the vehicle, but I did replace a power mirror once where the connector plug was buried way under the dashboard instead of being right at the mirror unit. That one was a real PITA for sure, but most are a can of corn.

    1. I think the no pinstripes needed something else, but that the gold wasn't it. Surprised I like no pinstripes as much as I do.

    2. Uffda, those are even worse than I'd imagined. That neck & sleeve trim is so thin, and the red border around the blue letters looks worse than the reverse.

  4. Back from deer hunting. I took a yearling (it's been a few years since I'd shot, so I was ok with a small one. Only bucks or large does for the next few years.). Our party of 8got 4 deer, including a 14 point buck that's neck was nearly as wide as I am. My 90 year old grandfather, who has been hunting for ages, said it was the largest deer he's ever seen. Quite the sight. We also saw a lot more deer that we didn't get/shoot at. Our best year in a long, long time. And populations are supposed to be down.
