2 thoughts on “Merle Haggard – Sing Me Back Home”
I've imagined this song as Hag'd written his own "Green, Green Grass of Home" so he doesn't have to send the songwriter checks.
Not that there's anything wrong with that, Merle sure got a lot out of writing his own versions of Johnny Cash songs, too. It's not his fault he was born later than the rest (and that they had good ideas before he'd had the chance to have them himself.)
Then ten months (and three albums!) later, on Mama Tried, he put covers of "Green, Green Grass of Home" and "Folsom Prison Blues" along with a lot of his Cash-inspired songs.
Which he recorded about the time that "Sing Me Back Home" was a #1 hit.
Wait, where'd that trumpet come from?
waz at a Patsy Cline tribute show (by this lady*) last night with the Mrs and my parents. The backing band did a nice rendition of "Working Man Blues."
