We hit about 85 degrees yesterday. Summer's going to be long and brutal.

Pat Neshek about the difference between last off season and this offseason, and what baseball card he wants most
httpv://youtu.be/HKNwwRW0JzY
Pat's friendliness to the card collecting community (and fan's in general) makes him a huge favorite. I'm glad to see him doing well.
Too bad the Twins and him had a bit of a falling out. He just seemed like he was destined to be a Twins lifer. Neshek could sign with the White Sox and I would still cheer for him.
yep.
Yes, but can he please stay with someone less abhorrent? He fit just fine with the Cardinals.
The Astros might win it all!!!!!
I suspect that he may be moving just so that he can have more variety in his baseball cards. (I meant less abhorrent than the ChiSux)
With every new team, it's a new set of Team HOFers he can get to sign things.
Since most of our favorite TV shows are on hiatus at the moment, Mrs. Twayn and I started watching The Wire. We're almost done with the first season, and all I keep thinking is what the hell took us so long.
What the hell took you so long?
I know, right?
I have never watched The Wire.
I lose all my internet cool points.
dido. Not to imply that I had internet cool points to begin with.
wattsy, i haven't seen it either.
I've watched the first season. It seemed pretty good. I should probably watch the rest at some point.
This is me too.
Is it on Netflix?
I've run through most of the nature documentaries that look good, and I'm starting to fix my internet cool points deficit by starting Luther, Firefly, and now Dr. Who. (I already had watched Sherlock.)
EAR is replacing Austen remakes with Gilmore Girls. If the characters walked more, I'd swear it was an Aaron Sorkin show.
It is not, unfortunately. I believe it is on Amazon Instant Video, though. If you haven't done a Prime trial yet, you can get a 30 day trial. Though that's a pretty tight timeline to watch it all.
OK. I'll grab the low-hanging internet cool points first.
I still need to finish the last few Foyle's War yet, too.
So, my daughter's compulsory skating team won first place in her competition last night.
They were the only team competing.
That sounds funny, of course, but when there is only one team in a particular event, the team is judged against the book. To get a first place, every element in the routine must be done to at least an 80% satisfactory level. The last competition, they weren't able to do that, but this time they got it done. Unfortunately, I couldn't be there, but my wife texted me right after they got done (but before they got the score) that they were fantastic. I took that with a grain of salt because she always says they did great, whereas I really watch and I think I can make a much more critical analysis of the performance. It's not always great. I know the difference. But, when I heard they got the first place mark, I was pretty happy.
Yep, I am plugged into ice skating. I've seen more ice skating on TV this year than NFL football and I'm okay with that.
Life is a funny thing.
Congrats to your daughter and her team! I, meanwhile, encounter much less figure skating than I did before having kids. Life is a funny thing.
For those who were unsure about watching the Fifty Shades of Grey trailer in its original form (coughAMRcough), this one might be of more interest/amusement, though it's still not exactly kid-friendly.

Wow, they must have used every single female Lego hairpiece.
A one hour rear shock replacement turned into a five hour rear shock, brake pads, and brake caliper replacement. I still need to work on the stripped set screw in the rotor, because it needs to be replaced. But I'm done for the day and have myself a bottle of Hairy Eyeball from Lagunitas as a gift.
mmm, Hairy Eyeball....
It was fantastic and the 9% was just what the doctor ordered after that ordeal.
Sockland, UAE, and Afghanistan are in this year. First match next Friday, Feb 13th. Hold on to your seats, folks.
Car said 70° while we were out today. After working out this morning, Mrs. Runner and I took the "granddog" out for a walk a to understand one of the local "lakes" -- beautiful day for it. Also saw that Target had the new Fitbit Charge HR, so we used our 5% off coupon and got Mrs. Runner her belated Christmas present.
I know it's not movie day, but How to Train Your Dragon is the first DreamWorks movie I've liked.
I'm so frustrated that Netflix doesn't have this (but does have part 2).
I find those Madagascarene Penguins pretty entertaining in the small doses in which I've experienced them.
I don't think it even has part 2 anymore. I couldn't find it anyway.
I'm so new to this. We're at one month and one week. And it's technically EAR's subscription, so I never had any introductory read when setting it up or anything.
OK, much thanks. Bookmarked.
I thought I made that "Madagascan", but I like the original word I guessed with better.
Then I take it you've not seen either Kung Fu Panda
This. Both are fantastic.
I have not, bug I'll look for it.
I'm firmly on record (1,2, 3, 4) as staunchly pro-Kung Fu Panda. Anyone who hasn't seen Po in action needs to rectify that post haste. Even the Nickelodeon show isn't half bad.
Linds refused to watch this, because dragons. Then I agreed to watch The Fault in Our Stars so that I could get her to watch it. Meh.
THEN, her friend raved about how awesome it is, and now she's....excited to watch it? Bah.
🙂
I haven't seen the movie, but I read the book. Knowing full well what would happen to one of the main characters eventually (because c'mon, of course), I still got all weepy.
All that's on Netflix is "Awesome Secrets Collection" and "Kung Fu Panda Holiday"
🙁
I may have a physical digital video disk of KFP1 or 2 at the home here. I shall check.
I could always order it from the Library as well.
I may just be lazy.
Re: Lazy. The chance I'll dig for it in the right place is pretty slim.
speaking of Not Movie Day, the Mrs and I just got back from Selma.
We are wondering how the eff that film did not get a boatload of Oscar nominations. The lead is great, the actress playing Coretta Scott King is great, the dude playing George Wallace (Tim Roth?) is great, the story is tremendous and heart-rending and sickening and uplifting, the visuals are powerful and real. It was a whole lot of "wow," and should go down as a required-viewing film.
If Selma doesn't win Best Picture, there is something seriously wrong with the world. It's an important film that's also really, really good.
Counterpoint: Grand Budapest Hotel. (I haven't seen anything else, but I'm always rooting for comedies).
Oh, I agree that GBH was awesome. Was it Oscar-worthy?
I've seen 4 of the nominees (Selma, Theory of Everything, GBH, and The Imitation Game). All were excellent. In terms of enjoyability, GBH wins in a landslide. In terms of compelling stories, Selma and Imitation are ahead of the game. In terms of "importance," Selma and Imitation Game again, but I think Selma has a pretty big lead.
In terms of "art," well, I dunno. Not my territory. The cinematography, costuming, etc. in GBH were pretty spectacular. It seemed really well edited, but then so did the others to my untrained eyes.
I probably won't go see American Sniper. My parents liked it, but I know enough about Chris Kyle (and I'm lefty enough) to be very hesitant. Even though I've really, really liked a number of Clint's films (Unforgiven and White Hunter, Black Heart stand out for me; I've not seen Million Dollar Baby or Flags of Our Fathers). The Boy has raved about Birdman, so I might try to see that. Given how it was made, Boyhood deserves some sort of Big Prize, but I'm not all that hot on seeing it. I'd never even heard of Whiplash.
Importance matters, but can't be a sole determining factor, and I think tends to matter less after importance has been recently rewarded, especially on a related topic. Being second to market is a disadvantage.
For me, GBH is one of the more enjoyable and novel movies I've seen in a long time. But I also don't see many movies anymore. And I root for comedies on principle, since they're so rarely rewarded.
FWIW I'm rooting hard for Boyhood because that movie was basically perfect and beautiful and gave me alllll sorts of feelings.
Zack, do you listen to Sam Seder's Majority Report? Because you should for a variety of reasons. On Friday he has a movie guest and he was raving about Boyhood.
I have not. I'll look into it, though.
majority.fm
Check out Friday's show as a pretty good representation of what the show is about.
Rob Neyer agrees with you. Bill James, not so much.
@canishoopus @steventurous Yeah, my point isn't that Rubio hasn't been great. It's that without the other two also back they aren't winning
I think this tweet is a great summary of why I no longer have any interest in reading the opinions of his like Gleeman or Zach Harper. It's contrarian for the sake of being contrarian couched in bs "whoa, hey guys, that's not what I'm saying, I'm just saying."
whose opinion are you talking about?
that didn't link very well, but the above tweet is from Gleeman defending a response he made to Steve McPherson saying it was really pek and martin's return, not so much Rick's, that is being then watchable.
The whole thread was a bit odd and, like i mentioned, basically everything I dislike about some of these guys. (fortunately there was no brunch/drunk talk.)
I had a Cheaptoy day (I brewed a batch of IPA while listening to Blind Guardian). I'm hoping for good things.
This is probably the most awesome thing I've heard all day.
I had a Cheaptoy [lite] day. (I brewed a batch of cream stout while listening to Led Zeppelin). I'm [also] hoping for good things.
<a href=""> Niblet with the assist
I could be mistaken, but the Niblet has a facial expression on that looks distinctly like a meme-baby's. Niblet may be commenting on your brew, your choice of music, or both. Not sure.
...that's either bemused or flatulent. Neither would surprise me.
The next kit, a Christmas gift from my brother, has me truly excited.
I think this video is very relevant to this conversation.

Pretty much.
