A sad story (with possibly some Forbidden Zoney aspects) about 1978 World Series hero Brian Doyle.
basically, if you want a favorable SS disability determination, don't live in the South (data is here for the interested reader; it provides rates of favorable determinations for adults, children, and overall).
Interesting (to me, anyway), national rates of favorable awards for workers (adults) have declined sharply since the start of the 2000s (see here), from mid-40 pcts to low 30-pcts of applicants. Applications also roughly doubled over that period, which complicates inference. Are the declining rates because less-"deserving" applicants have been applying at higher rates, because the system is under-staffed, because other reasons, or all of the above?
should I spoiler this commentary?
If you have to ask, you can't afford it.
just trying to handicap....
I would hope we wouldn't need to spoiler facts.
for those interested, but not so interested as to download and sort the data, here's how the 25 lowest "favorable determinations" of the last 15 years are distributed:
Tennessee has 10, including 3 of the 4 lowest rates
Mississippi has 8, including 6 of the lowest 11
Georgia has 4
the other three are SC (twice) and NC (25th).
The lowest 25 rates range from 22.98 (Tennessee, 2006) to 25.87 (NC, 2011). The first non-Southern state on the list is Ohio (2007, 26.12 pct, 27th).
In 2014, the top 5 highest favorable determination rates were in Wyoming (58.03 pct), New Hampshire (48.53), Alaska (46.50), North Dakota (43.22) and Vermont (42.48).
Interesting. We had applied for Disability for my wife and got it the first time. However we had heard to horror stories about being denied so a friend/lawyer who had worked with Social Security Disability applications coached us (pro-bono) on how to construct the application. Was it her work that got the application approved? I guess we'll never know
Its a free Yahoo! bracket. Hopefully we can have someone throw darts and make a perfect bracket!
There's already one set up. Spooky sent it out a couple weeks ago?
I missed it. doh!
I went with Spooky's. Is that the right thing?
I made some horrible picks, I'm sure.
I can always add them to DW's pool, too.
OK, now I joined this one, too. With the same bracket.
Yeah, my brackef's up. I'll give a link again when I have time (off to work in a bit).
Movie Day will be on Wednesday.
Here's that link.
Pass was the first six digits 1-6 leaving out the five.
Bleg: I searched for the podcast discussion that I thought took place here a while back and couldn't find it. So if anyone can throw some stuff out there to check out, I like narratives, science and tech. Flying in a few hours and I've already run through my queue.
Yes and yes thanks hj. Neither of those posts were in my search, must have been some silly user errors. Philly is fun but man I'm ready to listen to some podcasts on the flight home.
About 2010 or so (maybe late 2009? I just remember my sister was still at Mankato, and she attended there 2009-10 and 2010-11 school years) we had a mini-caucus at a place off of Minnehaha or Hiawatha. I remember taking the light rail in from the park-n-ride on 28th near the Mall of America and then Algonad kindly dropping me off at my car afterwards. Stick and Bootsy were there, I remember for sure, as well as a few others.
Anyway, I was trying to remember the name of the bar. Anyone know?
I was there, unless you're thinking about another time
The logo has a cat in it IIRC.
That's amazing about the cat. I've been there 10 times easily and didn't recall the cat logo.
Had it been a bird, I could have remembered the sex and species.
I had my first (legal) beers there for my power hour (which was before it became power hours, and then abandoned completely). I really went crazy there: 2 beers with only the then girlfriend.
The actual night of the 21st was more, erm, intense.
How improbable was NDSU's run to the tourney? Very improbable. Lifting weights in an abandoned supermarket; practicing in an old warehouse; losing 70% of their scoring from last year and their coach. Playing in a hockey arena just about as far from campus as you can get and still be in Fargo. And yet, they win. http://www.seattletimes.com/sports/gonzaga-bulldogs/big-hedlyne/
Half-bakef reviewing gets its day.
It's early in the year but difficult to imagine any paper overtaking this one for lack of imagination, logic or data—it is beyond redemption
Last week I had my best series of bowling of the season. Today I topped it by one pin. I had a 181, 169, 173 for a 523 series.
I hope this doesn't come off as bragging. There are plenty of people, even just in my little town, who are better bowlers than I am. It's just that, for all my love of sports, this is the first time I've ever actually been fairly good at one. Because of that, I'm probably a little prouder of it than I should be.
Brag away, padre. Being good at something feels pretty awesome.
Just last night, I worked myself out of an early 4-0 hole in my curling match (largely of my own making). It included a fun triple takeout (firm weight, through a tight-ish port. Ran one red into a second, then rolled my yellow over to the third red, for those who know what I'm talking about) that made a bad situation ok. Tied things up in the second to last end by scoring three, then set up the steal in the final end to win. It was a lot of fun and I'm growing more and more confident in my shot making and game calling skills each week.
That triple takeout sounds like it was a really good shot.
I've had four 500 series in my life. Always feels good.
I've always considered being able to get a 500 series the mark of a good amateur bowler. This was my fifth of the season, and yes, it really does feel good.
