March 22, 2015: He’s Back

A coworker has returned from Mexico after an ATV accident. He lost most of a finger and was denied help by his American coverage so he had to drive back, with the finger hanging by a thread, to Mexico to get it fixed. Poor dope.

  1. Let the cribbage tournament begin.

Yickit fought valiantly in his first ever game of cribbage, including nailing a double pair royal while pegging to take the lead half-way through. Going around the skunk line, I dropped a 21 hand but he followed with a 12 hand and 12 crib to take the lead at about 100 points. But I got the good hands after that and eked out a victory. The second game was close for the first third, but a few huge hands led to an easy skunk and 3-0 match victory. Brian, your revenge is still possible.

    1. What app/program/forum did you guys use?

brianS, I don't think I have your contact info. I can be reached at cdykhoff at google.

      1. We used Pogo.com. It was not that great, but it only took about 2 minutes to set up and it worked.

    2. I've played a few more games now, and still have yet to win. I'm going to play until I win 1!

    Pinto has concussion

As I noted yesterday, he was not taken out of the game after being hit in the head by a bat on a backswing for THE SECOND TIME IN THE GAME.

    1. He was taken out after a handful of pitches when the inning ended. It sounded like he was hit much harder the second time. He was checked out on the field by the trainer and allowed to stay in, so it would be difficult to blame the manager. Pinto got hit both times by the same batter, Adam Jones, so he didn't learn his lesson the first time and sit farther back when Jones came up again. Of course, that has nothing to do with when he came out, just that he shouldn't have been hit at all the second time.

    2. UPDATE: GM Terry Ryan is not ready to call it a concussion. The Twins will wait a fe days to see how he responds first. Ryan did say that Pinto has concussion-like symptoms. A CT Scan was negative. Ryan did admit that if this was the regular season, Pinto would be placed on the 7-day concussion DL because they would not have the time to play with like they do now.

      1. "Concussion-like symptoms." Who cares if it is a concussion or not; put him on the "DL".

  3. I'm quite on record as strongly disliking college basketball (and for the purposes of this comment, I'm just talking in terms of the quality of play.) I haven't watched much of the tournament, but Michigan St.-Virginia is not helping.

    1. I've watched the whole thing (well, I was also watching the Chelsea match until 15 minutes ago). There are a couple of pretty nice players in this game, but there have been a lot of ill-advised shots.

      1. The only other game I've seen anything from so far was Georgetown-Utah. I am not choosing my spots well.

  4. There are a lot of smart food people that visit this weblog, so I am going to poise this question: do you have a special way in cooking ribeye pork chops? I have discovered that they are really cheap at the local grocery (like a buck and a quarter for two chops) so I think I am going to buy those more often.

    1. I usually just put some Cajun seasoning on them, sear them on the stove, then throw them in the oven at like 400 degrees until cooked through. Simple and effective.

      1. Pretty similar for me: Johnny's Pork & Chicken Seasoning or Tony Chachere's on them, grill them off. Pork chops are one of my favorite things to eat.

        1. also excellent in stir fry. Cut into strips, marinate in a little oil, soy, ginger, garlic, salt and pepper, and corn starch. Fry in batches in a very hot pan, set aside, then do your veggies. Combine everything, pour over your sauce (if any), then serve over rice.

    2. I don't usually use the ribeye ones, but I've modified a Jose Andres recipe for regular weeknight usage.

Heat some oil in a skillet with some garlic.
Add sliced onion and 1 peeled, cored, sliced golden delicious apple. Cook until the onion begins to carmelize.
Salt and pepper the pork chops, then sear. Add some springs of thyme or oregano, and then finish in the oven. Finish with a tiny bit of sherry if you're so inclined.

    1. Yes it does. I have a lot of hopes for him. Obviously, he's young enough to come back, but it's certainly not a good thing.
