We've been continuing the thread from the Women in Rock week as well as Zack's wonderful contributions (because Women's History Month), so let's keep pressing further on. An Inak throat singer, Tagaq is certainly worthy of watching, if only because you've never seen anything like it before.

  1. Oooh good one! She was the vocalist at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet for a performance about residential schools, which I really wish I could have gone to but only found out after the fact because of the really terrible run-in she had with someone downtown. Anyway, I'd always been interested in checking her out since I know a few folks who are way into her, so thanks for making sure I did!

  4. She was credited as "Tagaq" on Björk's Medúlla (her last good album).
    I was expecting someone that looked like the throat-singing Eskimo woman in The Simpsons Movie, not someone... younger than me and wearing modern fashions.

      Tagaq . . . was in the city for a performance at Joe’s Pub: a jaw-dropping forty-five minutes of guttural heaves, juddering howls, and murderous shrieks—Inuit folk meets Karen Finley. The show was as remarkable for its fearless lack of inhibition as for Tagaq’s technical skill and her mastery of tradition.
