April 16, 2015: I’ve Missed This

I've read two books in two days, which is probably half of what I took in during the previous six months. I'm not sure why I always forget how much I love to do it.

  1. FYI, the Twins' game today is the Free Game of the Day on MLB.tv and you have the added bonus of only having the Royals TV crew or the Twins radio crew to listen to since FSN isn't televising this game.

    1. I'm not entirely sure I'm going to be able to get the game because of the TV situation at my in-laws. But I'm optimistic I'll find a way.

    2. I will try to pop in. Despite the stupid 8:30 start, my son is going to try to watch the game with me. No school tomorrow is an added bonus.

  2. One of my colleagues' sons just committed to play basketball at NDSU starting this fall. I don't know anything about the program, but it's pretty exciting for him & his family.

    1. The subcontinental man walking behind you noticed the exchange and gave me a funny look.
I was less rough on slipping the disc into my pocket, but I need practice. Your part went off well.
I think the concrete truck may have shielded us from any photographers.

      1. I assume you gave the man an entirely inscrutable look in return.
I'm afraid I can't offer you any more practice unless I start giving you some of my CDs.
The concrete truck could not have been more perfectly placed.

        1. Or maybe I could just start handing over items of unpredictable size and dimension. A banana one day, a small stone the next.
But I can't see it continuing once it's too warm for outerwear. What do spies do in the summer?

          Coincidence? Nyet. Keep practicing.

  3. How freaking crazy was the Western Conference this year? SAS started the night as the two seed, lost the last game of the year and fell to the sixth spot. These playoffs are going to be an EPIC throw down.

Even though they are the sixth seed, I think SAS is the favorite. But, it's not like they are playing Mount St. Mary's in the first round.

    1. I've had the cord cut for years, but I'll admit I'm considering Sling TV for a couple months to catch some of these games.

      1. You can try it free for a week. I did and it kept freezing up on my Roku. I canceled after a week. If I do go that way, I'm going to upgrade to the Roku 3 and hope that works better.

        1. They sent a coupon code to me since my last Roku purchase was from 2011 so I got 20% off a Roku 3. I had been thinking about upgrading anyway as my Roku XD was showing some age in the HGO Go app.

    2. I have a hard time seeing SAS winning three series on the road to make the finals. GSW is the favorite, and they should be.

  5. I need a Banjo call sign. Or maybe a Free one.

If anyone has any bike advice I'm planning on going to the police auction tonight. Not looking for anything in particular, but is there a size I should be looking for (I'm 6ft tall)? Or anything I should pay particular attention to? I know someone at a bike shop that'll tune up the bike after I get it, I just haven't bought a bike for something like 15 years.

      1. Lots of interest on this. Note: this was an SBG/WGOM-family item, so I wouldn't ask for any money for it. Drop me an email in the next few hours if you're interested. It will probably come down to a coin flip as to who will get the bag.

        Thanks!

        1. I got a Banjo Bros messenger bag (medium) for Christmas and love it. Only quibble is that if I'm wearing my cowboy hat, I can't get the strap over my head.

          1. Yes, it is great. No doubt! I'm not a commuter, bike or otherwise. For the rare times I need a bag (work travel), I've been leaning to something with a little more general style.

    1. To be real honest I'm not sure if a police bike auction is the best way to go for you. If you went to a bike shop, the guy or gal would ask you what you want to do with the bike (tour, local streets and trails, mountain, etc,) They will also match a bike with what you want use it for, how much you want to spend and size it correctly for you. You may get a cheaper bike at the auction but it might not fit exactly or do what you want to. Bike parts and labor could push you close to the cost of a new bike but obviously a new bike will cost more

As for size I'm 5'7" and looking for a 51-52cm bike tonight. Basically if you stand over the cross bar, you want it to be barely touching your crotch or an inch below. Here's a good sizing tool.

      1. I did that last night. Just wanted some more info for people who don't have a financial interest in the process. I have a couple that will work at the auction w/ some price points. Plus I'm a bit bored.

Looked like there are a couple good fixies for you.

        1. Depending on how quickly you wanna be able to ride it, I'll provide nearly free* labor and teach you how to do the work yourself once I get up there in June.

*Few Grain Belts while we work is more than enough

          1. I kid of course. My parents brought me down a grill over easter so this should happen either way, bike or no bike. Beer, Grill, MN.

      2. I'm the type that doesn't want to pay a lot for something that just collects dust.

When I started doing triathlon, tho, I decided to splurge and got a real nice carbon road bike. It's been a great investment for me, as I've logged many thousands of miles over the last 4 years, have done dozens of time trials/triathlons, and two centuries (signing up for my 3rd on May 1st - TFCE at North Dartmouth).

I like to ride with other people, but I also enjoy the solitude of a long ride by myself.

I agree with the comment above about bike shops - check out several - some will jive with you and some will turn you off. A good shop also has planned activities (group rides, sponsors races) where you can hang out with people at your own speed/pace.

  6. Update on the SBG College of Law fun...

The school’s answer alleges that ___’s performance assessments have caused him to feel insecure about his employment, and that ______has a history of “disrespectful, personal attacks, and needlessly disruptive communication” with others at Mitchell.
Colleagues and co-workers have complained to the school about ______’s behavior, the school said in its court filing, and ______ has been warned that it could be grounds for dismissal.

    I laughed.

    1. His claims are legally flawed?! That's either a self-indictment by the school, or an ingenious way of teeing the guy up for dismissal: "Look! He couldn't even sue us correctly! He's clearly unfit for the job!"
