I love the emptiness of postseason baseball columns. "8 role players who could become postseason heroes," one headline says. Throw some darts and call it a day.

Rooting Interest Update
HOU - THE FIGHTIN' ALTUVES!
PIT - CutchKC - If they were playing either of the other two AL teams, I'd be rooting for them
LAD - Vin Scully, Puig
TOR - Really, don't care between them and TEX
TEX - Beltre/Andrus is about the funniest running gag in MLB
CHC - Man the Central was stacked
STL - Tired of them, want new blood
NYM - Don't like NY media coverage
NYY - Needs no explaination. Also, FW and FFiL's team.Vin had surgery, won't announce playoffs π
Oh man, I hadn't heard that. What a bummer. That will probably drop them to below Texas, but still my pick for NL pennant. I do love me some Puig. Hopefully he's back strong for the playoffs.
I've decided to go for the Cubs strictly for the BttF tie-in. I also want them to tear Wrigleyville apart.
Yeah, the potential for premonition is a strong pull.
But on the other hand, Matt Trueblood's tears are so very, very sweet.
Funny thing, Bob Gale, who wrote BTTF, is a die-hard Cardinals fan.
I wonder if he's torn in the slightest.
It is the Back to the Future prophesy. It has to come true, just like flying cars and hoverboards.
Hungry Joe: It's Friday again.
I did it again. Clicked on a Souhan article. Can I just hide him on strib.com?
FTFY?
I almost did the same thing, but decided not to burn one of my 10 or whatever free articles on his dreck. Evidently I made the right decision?
You can get around the limit if you open the article in an incognito window (or inPrivate in IE, I assume). That doesn't solve the Souhan problem though.
I opened it without knowing who wrote it. Then I read it because stupid.
Apparently I was rocking out to some classic rock on the way home yesterday because Tom Barnard was on my radio leading an echo chamber about that column when I got in the car to go to work this morning. Trust me, there's no way a Souhan column is as bad as hearing Tom Barnard praising a Souhan column.
I will sum it up:
Mauer didn't play well offensively or defensively at 1b. The solution is to play him at positions that require more athleticism that he has never played before.
Let me put that in the proper form:
1. Mauer didn't play well offensively or defensively at 1b.
2. Play him at positions that require more athleticism that he has never played before.
3. ????????????????????
4. Profit!
According to Tommy B, Mauer is a disgrace to Minnesotans because he got lazy as soon as he got paid.
That's strange to me because I distinctly remember Tommy B telling me a few years ago (before he "got paid" and apparently became a disgrace) that Mauer was a pu$$y.
Number 3 is re-sign Torii.
Mauer is blocking that, so if they don't re-sign him.... blame Mauer.
You know, if you read it while playing Dark Side of the Moon...
That's a pretty good Onion article
I saw a "BBAL REF" license plate in the garage at work today.
I really really hope that's Sean Forman, but iirc he lives in Philadelphia (though he's from Iowa)
I met him a few years back at one of Mr. NaCl's college reunions. Nice guy.
Definitely is. I've had sushi with him the two times I went to a SABR convention.
This just got me to check on next year's SABR Convention as I've always wanted to go. But Miami the last weekend in July?! No thank you.
Now the SABR Negro Leagues Convention in LaCrosse? Much more reasonable.
Is anyone watching the Jays game? A few questions:
1. How did Colabello have an unassisted double-play at first base while getting a runner out at third?
2. How did Odor go from first to third on a grounder to the pitcher?
3. How does a player double on a pop up to first base?
Re: #2 - From Deadspin
I saw the replay of #1 on Gameday right now. Grounder to first, Fielder (at third) goes halfway home as Colabello is looking him back. Colabello touches first. Meanwhile the trailing runner goes from second to third, leaving Fielder out to dry halfway down the third base line. Colabello was running at Fielder and just ends up running all the way to tag him.
Thank you, thank you. Now what about 3?
Number 3 is re-sign Torii.
It's not funny, but I laughed.
While up here in Nort'land, got to visit with Rod Oistad and his wife. Rod was a pitcher on the Gophers' championship team back in the day. He regaled me with some interesting tales, including that he was recruited by UCLA but when they never got back to him before he had already committed to U of M; if he'd gone there, he probably would have had a good shot at the majors, because he wouldn't have had the oppressive workload.
When Rod blew up his arm pitching in 50 degree Michigan weather, the White Sox were playing the Tigers, and the coach knew Detroit's trainer, so they stopped there to have him check it out. When the arm was unwrapped, the trainer told him to hang it up! Did not make him happy one bit.
Hey AMR, saw a bald eagle in a tree on the side of the highway up here. On other that I saw but can't remember seeing here before looked like a mockingbird coloration but was black, not the light gray I'm used to seeing in StL. Also, saw three of them and mockingbird are solitary that I've seen so I'm thinking it probably wasn't one of those...?
Catbird?
No, it was a jet black color. The white stripes were near the body, like a bobolink , but it wasn't that or a magpie. Like a red wing blackbird but with a wide white stripe instead of the red.
Lark bunting?
I don't know what that is, but I'm guessing it's Dick Bremer's favorite bird.
I think you may have got it. Thanks
Maya Moore with a buzzer beater. Lynx lead Finals 2-1 and take back homecourt advantage.
