November 25, 2015: Occupy Thanksgiving

As of last night, nobody had lined up at my store yet (usually this begins a week in advance). I'm hearing that this is happening all over. I'm hoping this signals an end to the Thanksgiving night experiment.

    1. You're just upset that Colin and I are out of Big Brother so quickly. It's okay, you can admit it.

          1. Albeit not necessarily an intentional one, just someone who has no clue how to relate to human beings in general.

I mean, I get that he's driven, but if the people he's been brought in to "mentor" aren't capable of processing things in the same way, he could hurt more than he helps. The article seems to imply that's not the case on the Wolves, but man...

            1. Exactly. If I were in the situation with a KG-like mentor I'm 100% sure the words "Calm the fuck down! I'm doing things my way! " would come out of my mouth eventually. Like O'Brien said in the article

"He was yelling and screaming, trying to get me to scream back, but that's not who I am. I don't need to yell at someone all the way down the court after I dunk. Just because I didn't have a mean look on my face didn't mean I wasn't listening."

    1. during the game last night from the PBP announcer: Steph's worst shooting game of the season has been 38 pct. Kobe has shot BETTER than 38 pct twice all year.

      1. To be fair: Steph's is the best shooter in the world and he's in his absolute prime. Kobe is not. Comparing Kobe to Steph is unfair. I mean, I'm probably a better baseball player than Willie Mays at this point.

The better comparison is to Jordan when he was with the Wizards vs. Kobe from 35-37. He was older (38-39) than Kobe is now, but less overall miles (but he sat out a couple of years and got fat), so fairly close to apples v. apples.

That's per 100 team possessions. Both had huge usage, but Jordan much better overall in a lower offensive environment, I believe. And Jordan with the Wiz was a cover your eyes period. Look at all the threes that Kobe is jacking up. Oy vey. Also, compare the assist totals. Jeebus.

Edit: before I got the columns straightened out, I was seeing Kobe's assists at 1.9, which is actually his steals numbers. So, nevermind on that.

        1. Even better is Kobe's 3P% being significantly worse so far this year yet 3PA significantly higher.

          1. Those numbers are Kobe's last three years. He's under .200 this year, but attempts are "only" at 6.0 per 100 possessions. His performance to date this year is almost uniformly worse across the board than his average over the last three years. At the end of the year, assuming he stays healthy (big IF), these numbers are going to be *even worse*. He's totally done.

  1. Jay Jaffe has started his Hall of Fame ballot player profiles with the (likely) one-and-done candidates on this year's ballot. Part 1 features a former Twin, while Part 2 includes the player the Devil Rays traded to Seattle in order to obtain the services of Lou Pinella.

    1. How in tarnation is Mike Sweeney a one-and-done HOF candidate? He should be elected unanimously.

            1. It was temporarily back among the living internet, but it seems to have re-disappeared again.
I should ask jon on twitter if he can get it back up to build steam for the HOF case.

  2. Ever feel like you live in the wrong house?

Exhibit A: Show kid a post about creamed opossum for Thanksgiving. He makes comment about running that past Alton Brown. I have no idea who Alton Brown is. (Then I recollect skimming across the turkey skin conversation from Monday.)
Exhibit B: Wife was the one who had no clue about Anakin Skywalker's destiny, but can identify immediately when her sister gives their cat a wierd name from an Ewok movie.

"I don't know, man. I just live here."

    1. 'Possum's s'posed to be Good Eats, so it fits that he'd want to consult AB.

I found one down by the River over the weekend. I think it was the same one that I found two weeks prior that didn't retreat from my advance. Looks like it had made it another 50 yards before being called to the great hanging branch in the sky.
It looks like the skull was crushed post mortem, so I can't even get a cool-looking bone out of the poor creature's demise.

            1. If I hadn't left for deer hunting that very afternoon, I may have been tempted.
As it was, my wife was already giving me grief about too many mushrooms in the fridge. A dying opossum in the fridge probably pushes her to call a lawyer.

        1. Generally, yes. However, Opossums are not susceptible to Rabies. They actually serve to slow the spread of rabies by getting in fights with rabid animals and killing or mortally injuring them before they can spread the disease to others.
I just tapped it with my boot to see if it was alive. It was.

          1. I have no basis for knowing if this statement is true or false, but you've earned yourself enough credit re: the natural world that I'm sure someday I'll be repeating this fact without verifying it. The possum/rabies statement, not the boot tapping one. I'll probably repeat that too, but not as widely.

              1. Not sure I trust Big Possum.
I did stumble across the fact that skunk pet owners are now pushing for a proper vaccine for whatever skunk-spefic strain they carry, so that pet skunks who bite needn't be killed to check for rabidity. Now there is a niche advocacy group.

  3. Has anyone else been seeing news reports about the "kissing bug" and Chagas disease? The local station joined into the mass hysteria, and of course besides showing the stock footage of a triatomine bug (correct), they showed pics of a wheel bug (wrong!) as well. I know the "bite"* of a wheel bug can cause problems -- I had a carpoolie who had physical therapy on an elbow after he was "bit" on the elbow. Still, unless you're sleeping outside in the fall, in the south, and are bit (by a triatomine but, and smash the bug, and get a bad roll of the dice, and then are also really unlucky, the nasty medical condition that's scaring everyone. And now everyone will be scared of boxelder bugs and other benign insects.

*they don't have mouth parts to bite, they have a proboscis which they plunge into flesh. I have a pretty good photo of one here

    1. We had an assassin bug in the house a few weeks ago. Freaked Lindsey right out, and she isn't even aware of how painful their bite can be.

    2. It is a bite as it's their mouth, or similar feeding apparatus. Like a mosquito. It's not a sting: it's a bite.

boxelder bugs and other benign insects
But they show up everywhere and smell bad!

I got bit on the thumb by an assassin bug years ago (when living in the old house, so at least 5 years ago). It was crawling on our bedroom comforter, and I suavely picked it up so as not to alarm EAR, and as I took it to the wastecan, it bit.
"FUDGE!" I yelled. Only I didn't say "Fudge." EAR was very concerned.
Such a surprisingly painful thing. Definitely worse than any wasp sting or fly bite that I've suffered in my life. And it lingers, man. Days? I definitely still felt it the morning after.
I still can feel and see the spot on my thumb where it bit. The skin is different there, almost like a small palmar wart.

Ever since then, I've enjoyed the questionnaire before blood donations, trying to remember/guess when Chagas' Disease was going to be asked, because I know what it is (based on the internet research after the bite).
Is it right after or right before Babesiosis? I can never recall.

      1. I'm unaware that boxelder bugs smell bad, but I know they can stain when squished.

Most of the True Bugs are harmless (stink bugs, leaf footed bugs, milkweed bugs, etc) but you picked one that is not. I was not surprised when I found the wheel bug in the photo/link above; the neighbor's birch had a tent caterpillar infestation not far from the ash where she was sitting -- mmm, buffet. Meanwhile, I didn't like the way she turned to follow me as I walked around to get a good shot.

        1. I believe I have been thinking of the smell of Ladybird beetles.
The dead body parts are often together.
Boxelder bugs are just annoying in their relentless domiciliary omnipresence.

  4. We're off for Thanksgiving. I hope everyone has a great holiday weekend. See you Monday.

Can someone post a FMD for me? I meant to write one today but I just don't have the time.

  5. Some litter was in the yard today: windblown coupon flyers.
One piece had a picture of a pump-lotion bottle and the words

    24-Hour
    Moisturization

Those words scan differently in the first light of day.

    1. I am living with "ongoing travesty." But seriously considering going to my local micro to get a growler of their saison.

  6. Since its only going to be me for Thanksgiving, I decided to forego turkey and make myself a roast (arm roast) and twice baked potatos. Kind of scare about the roast because its something I've never really cooked before.

    1. Good luck with the cooking!

I am waiting for a pumpkin pie to finish baking right now. I made pie crust (this recipe) last night and this morning made Smitten Kitchen's pecan-pie-with-golden-syrup recipe. The finished pecan pie and my second batch of (unbaked) pie dough then traveled to Iowa by car today. The pumpkin pie recipe is from The Pie and Pastry Bible by Rose Levy Beranbaum.

I mention all these details not only because "did someone say pie?" but also to help my future self when I'm trying to remember which recipes I made this year.

      1. We got to it pretty early on, so he got some steroids at the emergency room last night and slept seemingly uninterrupted, so hopefully it goes away quickly.

    1. Don't know about croup in general, but Trey had a sinus and cough problem for about two weeks. Someone suggested Vick's Vapo Rub on his chest and the bottom of his feet at night underneath socks before he goes to bed. We noticed immediate improvement in his sleep the first night and he was pretty much over it after two nights.

      1. M wife got something Vicks-like and put it on his feet. That's a strategy I've never heard of before last night. I'm not sure it'll be all that effective on the croup, but I suppose it can't hurt.
