They didn't? If not, they were close. "Swim" got played at a few middle school dances. (So boys could mosh.)
Internal band turmoil (three members left following that album) followed by label turmoil* derailed any momentum.
*dropped by Columbia, picked up by Dallas Austin's new "Rowdy" imprint. Austin produced the album, right after CrazySexyCool and Madonna's Bedtime Stories. It's their album I'm most fond of, definitely geared to their live show. Big props to Austin for not pop-ifying them.
Their live show! People used to call James Brown "The Hardest Working Man in Show Business". Angelo Moore seemed to want to take that throne for himself. That he didn't end up with a career-ending uppers and painkillers addiction is pretty amazing. When I last saw them, there was a new, more hip-hop vocalist that traded duties with Angelo a lot. But Angelo still surfed the crowd as far as we'd take him. He also has the Mohawk tattooed on his scalp. Wow... Angelo's only 51! The band's first single came out when he was still 19. So I guess there's plenty of time for a fourth-wave Ska revival to bring the band back to prominence.
I've owned two Fishbone t-shirts.
1. Red. Front: "RACISM [Fishbone] SUCKS", Back: "FIGHT THE YOUTH WITH POISONED MINDS".
A few teachers made me tuck in the T-shirt, so it just read "Racism". Usually, I'd button the bottom button of my flannel shirt to obscure it.
2. Black. Red/Green/Yellow Logo on front, "FISHBONE" in white on back. Purchased as an Adult, after I saw them at some mostly-hardcore venue in downtown St. Paul.
I listened but didn't vote. Ex-boyfriends ruined my ability to be objective about ska.
Memories like that are the worst part about exes for me.
Ska ruined my ability to be objective about ska.
Steel yourself, every generation has to learn to hate Ska anew.
it should be coming around again in, say, 2020 or so.
I'm actually kinda bummed Reel Big Fish aren't coming to the Twin Cities on their 25th anniversary tour

Heh. I went through a ska phase. I'm not proud, but I admit it.
If you went to a liberal arts college in the early 80s, you went through a ska phase.
That debut Specials album stills gets heavy rotation on my iPod.
