Meat, that was quite the monsoon yesterday. St. Charles by your place was underwater.
Hey Pirate congrats on that GWU NIT Championship. As a Goper's fan I know exactly how you must feel.
Thanks. It's such a bizarre combination of "that was really fun" combined with "but why didn't you play like that all season" leaving you mostly satisfied but a little bit frustrated. With that said, GW's RPI is still better than those cheating-ass bastards at Syracuse. If they could have just won another game or two during the regular season to sneak in, anything can happen.
Woah! You're in town?
In honor of the end of spring training, I'm linking to this classic Tom Hanson piece. It should help us get into mid-season form quickly.
Emma, the 11-year-old beagle, will be following big brother George (golden retriever we had to euthanize late last summer) into the forests and fields of the great hereafter. Some sort of degenerative nerve problem has rendered lame, first her right hind leg and recently the left as well. All courses of treatment have been exhausted or ruled out and her quality of life is for shit.
It's a tough one - we got her the spring after we married and she was a companion to my Wife through both of my deployments. We didn't live near family (East Coast) and were an hour from both base and her city of employ ... no easy access to Navy wives or coworkers.
I'm not looking forward to the rest of the day.
Sympathies, Corn. Best to you and yours.
Ugh. We're in the same boat soon. Blue kitty is shitting all over the house and drinking way too much. The vet says kidney failure is bound to happen soonish. I feel for you, bro.
Tough news, Corn. You've got my sympathy.
thinking of you, Corny. It's always tough losing the fur babies.
Sad news, indeed. May she know the comfort of your smells and voices to the end. Hang in there, Corn.
That's tough, I had to say goodbye to Dickens, my main bud of the 9 years, this past January.
Thanks for the commiserations folks, it's appreciated. My wife handled it with grace. We said our goodbyes and I took the kiddos to look at birds, fish, hamsters and the rescue area (cats only) while she sat with Emma for the injection.
Brought her home and put her in a grave next to George's, then had a few drinks. Went about as well as could be expected.
I have had to sit with pets twice for the finale. It is heart-wrenching.
Oh Watford, you battled so valiantly the first half of the season but while Regulation looks safe, I guess you a lower middle table team after all.
At least they get to live another season in the EPL, unlike Newcastle. wooof.
Smart thinking by Nolasco. Get rid of all the gopher balls now so there won't be any left when the games count.
Typical of Mauer. Waste a three-run homer in an exhibition game.
MAUERPAUER
Wow, Ricky's not going to give up a single HR this year at this rate.
If only there were some young guy who pitched pretty well last year that could start instead....
I was asked to judge a bbq contest this weekend. They're taking this thing totes serious.
At my age, an invitation like that would warrant a letter to Penthouse Forum.
So, yeah. I had a hand in picking the boston butt / ribs champ who was also crowned the grand champ of the event. I had a hell of a round for the butt / ribs, but also endured some very under-cooked whole hog entries. Yeah, the Forum may receive a letter from me about the porking.
Having Founders Mango Magnifico with NBBW at lunch today. NBBW: top note and nose is Mango but definate secondary taste is Habanero.
Man today's weather was weird as hell. We ran into a blizzard as we were driving to Madison. The rest of the afternoon alternated between being sunny and heavy winds and snow. It's sunny and nice now as we head home.
it's alternated between blizzardy and bright and sunny literally 5 times so far here.
I think we got every possible type of snow in a four hour period today.
I feel bad for the younger Citizens who missed out on the good fun; for old time's sake
I remember reading the piece when it came out....
My roommate in Redondo Beach had an SI subscription, and we were both fascinated by Plimpton's writing. He was a national treasure.
I remember being stunned at the number of people who apparently were taken in at the time. It seemed like it was pretty obviously a joke to me.
In my defense, I was pretty young at the time!
I'm actually to young. I'd only ever heard of it after the fact as a hoax.
In a strange bit of history, the Sidd Finch story was the first story I ever read in Sports Illustrated.
major bummer, A.J. Pollock
oofta
Gah! That was a keeper in one of my leagues.

Might as well link his newest, too.
Sad news in the corn bin.
