How about those Timberwolves, eh?
The first quarter was going exactly as I expected the game to go, really cool to wake up and see the Wolves somehow pulled it off.
Shabazz scored 35 points on 12 shots, that's crazy and not something you can expect. But looking at the box score, it is stuffed with stats that show how bright the future can be for this core if they put the right pieces around it.
Wiggins put an efficient 32 on the board, Towns went for 20 and 12, LaVine shot 4-7 from 3, and it looks like Tyus had a positive impact on the game (+19 in 19 minutes). Rubio's got an ugly line, but the team still won.
I watched the final minutes of the 4th and OT and it was almost exclusively Rubio and LaVine in the backcourt with Bazzy, Wiggins and KAT. Rubio's biggest contribution was defending Curry. He was all over him. Plus, KAT would switch on pick-and-rolls to Curry and was frustrating Curry. On offense, the Wolves looked better than the Warriors mainly because Rubio was constantly getting the the ball to the right person at the right time. He took only two shots that I recall, making 1 (a layup). At times he would give up the ball to Wiggins or LaVine for them to pick and roll with KAT. Rubio may not have had a pretty line for the game, but from my eyes, he pretty much spearheaded the offense and the defense during crunch time.
Thanks for that recap, no surprise that Rubio's influence on the game didn't show up in the box score. I mentioned it before, he's one of my favorites in the league to watch because of his unique abilities and intensity.
Rubio and KAT can be a hell of a duo defending pick-and-rolls. On the first David Brauer & Britt Robson podcast, Britt talked about KG's ability (at his peak) to defend both players during a pick-and-roll. Hopefully KAT can absorb some of that ability from KG.
The game I went to where the Jazz blew them out, Rubio was the only one who had a great line. But he was the only one making shots that day. If you're having to rely on Rubio to put up points, there's probably something going wrong with the offense that day.
I watched the entire game last night. I was at the Jazz game a couple weeks ago as well.
Jazz game- Rubio looked great and I felt at one point in the early second half, we had some momentum and it almost felt like we subbed in a squad who could lose the game for lottery reasons. It wasn't until the game got out of hand that the "A" squad came back in. It just all felt a little weird.
Last night- First half, Rubio seemed out of it and made some questionable decisions. I thought Tyus played the best game that I have seen. Very aggressive with the ball on offense and played passable defense. In the game-changing 4th quarter stretch, the Rubio/Lavine/KAT/Wiggins group just looked so solid on both ends of the floor. Muhammad was huge all night. The reversed call on the Curry blocking foul that turned into a KAT charge felt like a dagger we could not overcome. However, the young guys played with poise and the Warriors looked frustrated and out of sync. Big franchise win to build on next year. Our length and athleticism is tough to game plan when we are on.
That all being said, Rubio is the right guy for this team right now. His unselfishness, rock solid defense, and ability to control the flow of most games are super valuable and under-appreciated by the KFAN rubes. KAT is already a top 15 player in the league. Wiggins created something of nothing in key spots last night and can be a "take over the game" type of player. Lavine is a wild card who I think can be a second level star in this league. We just need to build some more depth around this core group. Sub out anything for Prince. Find another big who can stay healthy to pair with Dieng and KAT in the front court. Most importantly, we need this coaching staff either to find away to draw up more effective defensive schemes, or we need a coach (or coaches) who can. I really like Mitchell in many ways. Just not sure he is the guy to take this team to another level.
I really, really, really do not understand the "The Wolves need to move on from Rubio!" garbage that's pedaled. Great, I get it, he's not an elite shooter, but he's so good at everything else that he makes up for it. And I don't think someone like Irving or Why Not (as much as I love him) would be great for a team with so many people who should already be shooting the ball. I can think of 5 or 6 PGs that I'd consider an upgrade, and there's no way the Wolves are getting any of them, so the idea of moving on is foolish.
Plus, he seems to be healthy now and is consequently putting up the best TS% of his career while being the best defensive pg in the league. He's also just entering his prime. This is absolutely a guy that can lead a team (pending a reasonable bench construction) to a championship.
Beats the hell out of Madsen jacking up 3s at the end of the season to improve lottery position.
Also, they're not the Knicks! (who are seriously contemplating removing the interim title from Rambis!)
Also, someone noted that the Warriors had won something like 114 straight games when taking a 15-point lead at any point in a game until the Wolves rallied from a 15-point first-quarter deficit.
Someone asked about the game log schedule. I went back to collect everything and this is what I have:

In other news, the WGOM Achievements page hasn't seen any attention in 11 months so I added columns for last year and this year. Here's your chance to claim your achievements because I can't remember them.
I won the last Frozen Four prediction contest, whatever year Union won the whole thing.
1865?
Nice
I won the World Cup prediction contest in 2014.
I won one of the fantasy football leagues.
R. I. P. Merle Haggard, from complications from pneumonia, at the age of seventy-nine.
I was in the office with a 25 year-old employee when I read this and I told her.
"Who's that?"
Sing him back home. RIP, Merle.
Get rid of Joe the grinder you better be there alone
Cause the old man from the mountain's coming home
I've probably listened to Merle more than any other artist since I discovered him a few years ago.
At least five songs today just on shuffle.
So glad I and free got to see him that once.
Guy was awesome.
I heard early and almost TMd you the news. Definitely glad I got to see him recently.
I'm glad I got into his music while he was still alive so he could take some of my money and hear my applause. Here's my praise for Mama Tried, still my favorite.
