  1. They kept stopping the frame-by-frame replay - shown during the game feed - before the puck stopped moving over the line, but that sure looked like a goal from the still shots I've seen since.

I also don't know how you can play 20 minutes of a hockey game and expect a win.

  2. Yellow rumped warbler on the deck this morning was a nice treat. No need to strain to see what I was seeing, close and bright and clear.

    1. I saw a Northern Harrier on Saturday. Are those pretty common? I'm not a big bird watcher.

        1. Right. I see them out here quite a bit but don't know that I ever had before moving this way.

      1. At least just the rain. Both would be preferable, but I'd just like to get to the ballpark.

        1. Did your rugby game go on as planned yesterday? That had to be more than a little muddy.

          1. It was Saturday, actually, so we lucked out immensely given yesterday and Friday's weather.

  3. I'm finally (mostly) mobile again, and just in time to brew a batch of beer. I'm making a citra ipa which is fairly straight forward, but with a huge dry hop at the end.

    1. cheaps, or any of the other homebrewers, have you ever made Graff?

Materials needed for a 5 Gallon Batch

Clean fermenting yeast I have used Nottinham and Safale-05, both are good
.5 lbs of Crystal 60L If you use cheap store brand juice, I reccomend 120L. Cheap juice tends to turn out a tad tart and this will balance it.
1 oz of torrified wheat ( head retention, I've never used more than 2oz)
      4 Gallons of apple juice.
      1 gallon of water
2 lbs of DME ( I use 1 lb. amber and 1 lb. light DME)
0.5 oz of you favorite hops ( right around 6% AA, I have used 18.5% AA summit hops before and it took a month after kegging for strong bitterness to blend nicely)
WARNING! IF YOU ARE GOING TO CHANGE THE AMOUNT OF HOPS USED, MAKE IT LESS NOT MORE, it's really just too bitter with any more.

      Directions for brewing

Steep the 60L and torrified wheat in .75 gallons of water @ 155 degrees for 30 mins.
Sparge with .25 gallons 170 degree water and throw away grains.
Add DME and bring to a boil.
Add hops when boiling starts and boil for 30 mins.

Cool down the wort (if you choose not to cool the wort and just let the AJ do the cooling then your cider won't be as clear). I don't care about clarity so I just let the AJ do the cooling, but if you stick your pot in the freezer and let this get down to 70 degrees or so your cider will clear fairly easy. Pour the wort and apple juice into your carboy and pitch yeast.

Ferment 2 weeks at 64-68 degrees then keg or bottle.

I keg, and this stuff is VERY drinkable as soon as it is carbonated.
SUPERB taste and drinkability after 2-3 weeks of aging.

People bottling, it will have SUPERB taste and drinkability after the standard 3 week bottling period for carbonating.

      1. I'm intrigued. Are there any contamination concerns with not boiling the apple juice?

How noticeable is the hop or are they in there basically to balance out the sweetness?tartness?

I may give this a go next time I have a free keg. Seems like it'd be an interesting into to the world of ciders.

        1. I made something similar with no hops this afternoon. I boiled .5 lbs of light malt extract and added it to a gallon of whole foods organic apple juice. Boiling the juice is ill advised, but being that it's pasteurized and in sterile containers the fear of contamination should be pretty low. I've made several ciders, but never hoped them. There are 300+ pages of posts associated with that recipe, and not a one with an admonishment. The original poster stresses over and over again not to increase the amount of hops, that the hops are there just to knock down the tart flavor left over from the juice. The tart aftertaste would be my main complaint about making hard cider from store bought juice.

I'll let you know how this one turns out, and then I'll likely make the above recipe to compare.

          1. I kind of figured about the hops. Not much use in experimenting there, then.

I'm 100% I'll is store bought juice, though, because money.

  4. Does anyone have experience buying a car from impound auction? I'm thinking about purchasing a vehicle, but with no keys / no idea of running condition it could just be a money trap.

    1. Seriously, though, unless they demonstrate the condition of the vehicle (running/running & driving) at the auction – or verify it does so in some other fashion – I'd be pretty reckful about laying down coin for a (non-collector) impounded car.

Are there any government fleet auctions nearby?

    1. They had 31 in the first 18 innings of those two games. Seven came in the 10th-16th yesterday. I wonder where 31K over two games ranks? Probably still pretty high, but I'm sure playing ~2.75 games helped set that record.

        1. I guess my question then, which may be harder to research, is "what's the most k's in an 18 inning period?"

    1. Buxton and Kepler are going to AAA, that's a heck of a talent infusion for Rochester.

Danny Santana is back and I'm guessing he's going to get quite a bit of playing time in CF.

Is Meyer going to start or go to the bullpen?

      1. My guess is the bullpen since they seem to be struggling more than the starters at this point.

        1. That was my first guess too, but maybe they need another spot start if Santana is still hurting and Duffey's shoulder will sideline himfor a bit? Sounds like he's put together a couple good starts for Rochester (massive small sample size alert of course).

Seems weird to move him back to starting in AAA and then have him be the first relief call-up, but it wouldn't be the first thing the front office has done this year that I don't understand.

            1. "We're gonna try to kickstart things by moving Dozier to centerfield. We think that with his combination of willingness and athleticism, there's no reason he can't excel."

              1. Cuddyer had a 1.000 fielding percentage and 34.4 UZR/150 in center field. How hard could it be?

          1. Today would be Meyer's turn in the rotation (if Rochester wasn't off today), so he's available today in long relief and he has experience as a reliever and he's on the 40-man roster. This is a short-term call-up due to wearing out the bullpen yesterday, so it makes sense.

      2. So, confidence infusion for Buxton? I have to imagine they really don't know what to do here.

There's obviously not much space in the outfield for Kepler just yet, so getting him playing time is a good thing.

        1. I wonder. If he can crush AAA pitching but has trouble against MLB pitching, I'm not sure how much being in AAA helps him. But I don't know the psyche of major league players.

          1. Buxton's only had thirteen games of AAA, so some time in Rochester may be all right. On the other hand, if they truly believed in him at the start of the season, I don't know that three bad weeks should be enough to change their minds. Sometimes you have to let a young player work through his struggles at the major league level. I'm sure no expert, but I've gotten to where I really don't give management the benefit of the doubt any more.

            1. I agree with everything you wrote. Hopefully Buxton gets hot at AAA and clicks right away when he's back.

Wish I had more confidence that the Santana/Rosario combination can be an improvement over Buxton. There could be some ugly defense out there with Sano and Arcia flanking one of them.

            2. I don't think there's any real proven formula to develop players. Some you let fight through their struggles at the majors (such as Aaron Hicks), some you send down when they struggle and bring up when they improve. Plouffe bounced up and down several years before settling in as the everyday third baseman. Dozier got demoted his first year. I think if Buxton wasn't striking out so much, he would have been allowed to stay. Or if the rest of the team wasn't struggling so much, they could have lived with his bat at the end of the lineup to go with elite defense. What I really question is if Buxton needs to be sent down, why not Murphy? He's been awful on offense and defense. He hasn't been striking out, but he's been popping everything up. He's provided zero value and I just hope that the team isn't avoiding demoting him to avoid looking bad in the trade. Of course, it also makes waiving John Hicks look really bad right now. Twins still haven't filled his 40-man spot. There was no reason to do that at that time.

              1. Yeah, I don't understand that, either. I don't think John Hicks is anything in particular, but why let him go for nothing if you don't need the spot?

I also agree that there's no one formula for when you send a guy down and when you let him work through his struggles. But the Twins' answer seems always to be to send the guy down. Even Aaron Hicks, who's always cited as the exception, never got much more than a half-season at a time. Again, I can see an argument for sending Buxton down, and I hope it works. We'll see. I just don't give Twins management the benefit of the doubt on it.

              2. And it sounds like David Murphy has called it quits. I don't know why they opened up the spot on the 40 man.

  5. Is there a good collection to buy all of Prince's 12" singles? I found this album on Amazon, but I really wish I could buy just Disc 2 since Disc 1 is mostly stuff I already have.
