The family and I went to Surly yesterday. I haven't been in a sea of humanity like that in a long while. There were more people there at any given time than my store gets total in a day. I really need a change.

RIP Rudy Van Gelder
Please disregard all my love for Watford posts last week. Yikes, they have stunk up the month of August.
also, there was a flyby of note this morning.
Mags, I'm making a hefeweizen today that I plan to infuse with pomegranate (most likely juice. Not sure I want to go through the trouble of juicing a fresh one.)
That sounds pretty good. I do love a good hefeweizen.
It's been fraught with challenges today, though. First a light rain started up as soon as I got it boiling. Then I realized I hadn't checked my hops when I bought them, so the alpha acid percentage is about half what I was anticipating. Then I found a bee in the pot and haven't been able to get it out yet, so now it's a bittering bee.
that's a buzzkill.
what kind of profile are you going with the hefe? I love banana esters in some hefes, but I wouldn't say I'm wedded to only that approach.
It wasn't that bad. The rain was light and only happened while boiling, so shouldn't have any effect. The hops could be an issue, but I think the tartness of the pomegranate should mask that.
I'm definitely going for a strongly ester-y hefe. I got a Bavarian wheat yeast, which is pretty strong. I did use some honey malt to make it a hair darker and to lend a slightly sweeter balance to the banana and pomegranate.
buzzkill.
thank you, thank you. I'll be here all week. Try the veal.
Oh man did that go right over my head.
An interesting article on the infamous Brock for Broglio trade. If this is right, there were a lot of people who thought at the time that the Cubs were getting the better end of the deal.
back from dinner after seeing Sausage Party. It was raunchy, funny, and did not meet the high expectations set by The Boy. Nothing subtle about this movie.
We saw it as well. I feel similarly, but I think it's better than most movies I've seen this summer. At least this flick has thought through what message it wants to send. Dr. Chop's words, 'too bad sex is the answer to the question posed'. I can't disagree, but it was a fun romp nonetheless.
Finished Ragnar Trails: 4.9 miles (Yellow), 3.0 (Green), and 7.3 (Red) around noon today, in Northfield MA. Wow.
Man it was hot in MA. After every loop tried to wipe off with Burt's Bees Cucumber wipes (no showers at Ragnar), but still ended up with some serious chafing.
Good route, serious inclines and a lot of single-track that required extreme focus. But done.
Night running with headlamps was real cool.
Way cool. I've not had the time to try a Ragnar, but would love to some day. Did last year's Surly trail Loppet. Felt like death, but very proud to finish. Don't have plans to do it this year though.
