I've kind of gained a bit of a belly - it's as simple as beer and late-night cravings - so I've been successfully avoiding both things for about a week. If anyone here has worked off a belly in the past, I'm all for words of encouragement and advice. I'm not out of control by any means; I'm 5'11" and about 185 or so, so I know others have struggled from a much higher point than I, but I just don't feel like myself some days.

how old are you, spoons? That metabolism shift hits all of us at some point, usually in the early 30s. It's a sign of impending death. 🙂
I believe he's 39 (or soon to be).

wait until you hit ~43 and you have problems reading the serial numbers off the back of your PC
or text on your phone....
5'11" 185.... you can just keep quiet right there.
You got 3 inches on me, and I have... a lot of pounds on you.
It really comes down to diet a lot more than one might think. And that's where I struggle. I've been trying to avoid sugar for a while, which I've seen a slight improvement, but still not where I'd like to be. Probably because I'm still eating more meats and carbs and not as many veggies. I usually find that the better it tastes, the worse it is for me.
6 inches on me, and also many pounds.
Aye on diet. All of it.
Freshly 39, so some of that is at play, surely.
I watched a big chunk of the Kings' home opener last night, against the Spurs.
No Duncan, but same ol' Spurs. Deep bench, team basketball. I fell asleep before the end, but the conclusion was foregone. Kings couldn't hang with the Spurs in the 3rd quarter. Oh, and Kawhi Leonard is the best basketball player on the planet not named Lebron James.
AMR, apologies for attempting to filch your current reading material.
it's cool. When your hand came out of your pocket, I thought you had something for me.
When your hand came out of your pocket,
I thought you had something
for me.
But it was empty—
reaching, grasping.
You did not know that what I had
was not yours
to take.
I held tight,
you let go.
We walked on,
neither of us looking back,
you your safe house,
I to mine.
put it all in lower case, shuffle words around a bit, and add a goat-footed balloonman and you've got yourself a hit!
that's some quality material.
I smell a wgom poetry contest coming up!
Ha, I'm pretty sure this is what happens to me when it's been too long since the last PwtP.

You can read it if you want to.
I'm disappointed there's no color pictures.
this must have looked really weird.
I doubt it. I rounded the corner, and AMR was walking the opposite direction with a few papers in his left hand. I took my left hand out of my jacket pocket, my fingers grazed the papers, and when he didn’t immediately relinquish them, I returned my hand to my pocket. I don’t think either of us slowed down any more than one would ordinarily slow upon rounding a corner and finding another person coming in the opposite direction.
ahh, man. if you had tried harder to grab, it would have been weird to see.
"gimme."
"no."

I'm more skilled at clandestine operations than you might expect.
Rainy day. Discovered a leak in our garage. Due to a clogged gutter. Awesome! Wet drywall!!!111one111!!!
At the mold will be happy.
You are all obligated to watch this show and tell all your friends to watch it. My kid will be fetchin' coffee for the folks associated, starting monday.
mmmm, doughnuts
Got a lot of snow yesterday, but most of it melted when it hit the ground. Good thing, as its pretty windy today and a lot of the leaves haven't fallen yet - if there would have been snow on the leaves, we would have had a repeat of the massive power outages three years ago.
Took the day off today - good day to sit by the fire, read books, and relax. Got a kit from Northern Brewer to make hard cider, so that's on the list for the weekend.
Boy do I know that feeling. I'm starting to use the belt loop calendar system. I think mine started at about 33. The worst part is that it sneaks up on you which makes it harder to make lifestyle changes.
I did upgrade my weight training system which actually allows me to do leg exercises, but I'm woefully incompetent at doing cardio. I think I'm going to try to replace my treadmill (because running suuuuuucks) with a bike trainer soon, though. Maybe that'll help.
Running's the best. Running on a treadmill sounds like it sucks.
Agreed. Going to have to wait awhile though, because new hip.
Running is the worst. It doesn't help that the last time I ran outside, the impact effed my knee up.
Now that my main exercise - rugby - is taking a back burner, I'm going to have to be more careful about getting my self moving (though living on the homestead should help
PS - 6'1", 165 haterz
Hey, I was 6'1", 165 once. In 9th grade.
Recently got a bike trainer, buy haven't put the bike on it yet because all biking outside occasionally. Looking forward to using it this winter.
Exercise that isn't golf sucks.
I guess I could live with an eliptical (the motion is smoother, and I feel like my joints actually feel better when I'm on one a few times a week) but there's no room for one in the house, and I hate sweating buckets in front of others.
I cannot run on ellipticals. My gait does not match where the machine wants my feet to go. I've jammed a knee hard both times I've tried.
ditto. I've tried ellipticals and they absolutely kill my calves. It's like trying to do a distance run with a sprinter's stride -- does not work for me.
Exercise that isn't golf sucks.
Long hikes birding or mushrooming are pretty good.
You cover a lot of territory getting frustrated while chasing after little things and occasionally having moments where it all comes together in glory.
So basically golf without the greens fees.
Honestly though, I've picked up birding and now mushrooming over the last five-ish years as a way to keep myself active.
I used to get so lethargic, particularly in winter. I pushed myself a bit to get obsessed finding things as a way to give me incentive to be outside and moving. I think it's helped a lot, though I haven't lost weight much through my late 30s, I haven't gained either. It's also reminded me of how much I love exploring wild spaces, looking for something interesting on a map and then going to see what's actually there.
I also think it's helped my moods. I've heard that a lot of Seasonal Affective Disorder is pop-science poppycock, but getting out and in the sun for a half hour even when its below zero sure seems to have kept the winter blues away. Or maybe it's the endorphins from thinking "can't stop moving, might freeze to death."
I have a Concept2 rowing machine that I love. Virtually no joint impact so I never hurt afterwards, and it's easy to watch TV while doing (though the volume has to be up because rowing machines are loud).
rowing is a great whole-body workout. Evil, but great.
It is hard on my back and (surgically repaired) shoulder, however.
I love rowing and would gladly get a nice machine. I need to take better care of myself. Maybe now that we've cleaned out some of the basement...
I would have expected Corny to be a rower. Not a Marine.
Exactly. You'd be riding, not rowing.
