Nisennenmondai – B-1′

Live on NTS (London, UK), 2015

I learned of Nisennenmondai this year for their Adrian Sherwood-produced new album #N/A, but it appears they haven't toured or promoted it with live sessions. This song, "B-1'" is from their 2015 album N', which is different versions of the songs from their 2013 album N.* However, a live 2015 recording of "B-1'" was included as a bonus track on #N/A, so I don't feel too bad about fudging the year category... I've frequently listened to all three albums this year. (Late realization: #N/A was released in Japan in late 2015 -- without the live bonus tracks found on the 2016 UK release on Sherwood's label.)

I really don't know what's grabbed me about them... the pulse with simple adornments? It's like what if a three-piece rock band took their influences from Plastikman or something. This song in particular seems is a bit of an audio illusion, keeping at the same pace while sounding like it's speeding up. This and Horse Lords, that's been my year in music.

*I can recite the tracklist of each of these albums from memory:
N: A, B-1, B-2
N': A', B-1', B-2', B-4, [Bonus tracks: A' (Shackleton Remix), B-1' (Shackleton Remix)]
#N/A: #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, [Bonus tracks: A' (Live), B' (Live)]

  1. I assumed, given the title, that this was Nibs' post, given whatever the heck is going on with him and his (random?) capital letters.

    1. Yeah, that was weird. My phone's keyboard decided every word was the end of its own sentence. I went back and cleaned up the punctuation, but the capital letter thing was more than I cared to correct at the time.

  2. So, the drummer is the MVP of this group, then?

I almost had a heart attack when she sneaked that snare hit in there

Not something i would listen to particularly often, but that was a weirdly engrossing nine minutes.

    1. Yeah, in the sense of hardest to replace for performance/recording. I don't know if one of the other two is the main creative force.
Fun fact: "Gurl Drummer" was the only tag I had to create.

I also found this clip to be the most visually interesting (at least of their recent material).
      Like an old psych clip.

  3. I first realized last night while running some errands listening to all 3 albums that #N/A is probably titled that way to append "A" (Adrian) to N/N'.
#1 is maybe another re-working of A/A', and #5 the same to B-1/B-2/B-1'/B-2' (B-1 and B-2 being about as different as B-1 and B-1').
So, whatever your reaction to the above clip, you'll feel the same way about all three albums*.
If you'd almost like to listen to that clip on repeat, but not hear it exactly the same way, you'll probably want all three albums.
If you find nothing interesting there, you'll find nothing to like on any of the three albums.

*Except the Shackleton remixes are very inessential.

They do have albums before those three that I haven't heard anything from, they've been a band since 1999. (Apparently the band's name is the Japanese word for "Y2K".)
Those albums have actual titles with actual song titles in them, too. That's all I really know about them.

One more way in which this group's refinement and exploration of small differences reminds me of Plastikman (who did similar things with "Spaz"/"Spastik"/"Psyk"/"Sickness"/"Panikattack" IIRC).
