I really don’t have a problem with well-done swing revival, especially the stuff that skews toward the hot Count Basie Cab Calloway/Louis Prima end of the spectrum instead of safe, mainstream stuff on the Tommy Dorsey/Glenn Miller end. It’s a revival form that simultaneously re-synthesizes many strands of American music that emerged precisely because Swing culture fed into Bebop/Hard Bop, Jump Blues, R&B, Doo-Wop, early Rock & Roll, even Country & Western.
I was a big fan of swing, even got a good bit into the dancing (there was also a girl involved...). Is it regular listening music? No, not so much. Is it still a ton of fun? Absolutely. I love the horns, and wish they were utilized more widely.
Completely agree about the dancing--it was so much fun with a good partner.
You ever visit the Wabasha Street Caves in the late '90's?
Little known fact: That was second choice behind "Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight" for Jack Nicholsons line in Batman.
Not for swing dancing, though I did go to a wedding reception there.
I enjoyed my share of swing dancing in the late 90s.
I got one of my college Phys Ed requirements taken care of by learning "ballroom dancing" at Macalaster, with EAR (then "EAP").
The one that stuck was swing. (I already sortof knew waltzing, and the foxtrot? Nope.)
We did some swing dancing after our wedding in August 2000. EAR had the Swingers OST, Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Brian Setzer.
(After reading Malcolm X's Autobiography, I decided I wanted a Zoot Suit for prom, but didn't know how to find one... it was not possible from the clothing rental companies in NU. Within a few years of graduation, it was possible and almost overdone, but I doubt anyone was doing it to be like Malcolm X.)
I cant wait for Bruno Mars to reach and ape this era of pop music.
and i'm sure they'll give him a grammy for that retread as well because god forgive they give it to something compelling and culturally relevant...
Here is a video of SNZ on Sesame Street
