On Friday's show, the contestants whiffed on 4 of 5 on World Capitals, which I think is a more egregious mistake. I can understand not liking sports and getting on Jeopardy, but World Capitals seems like should be a must to get on the show.
I mentioned it yesterday, but RIP David Brislance, MN Arrowhead Bird Photographer. At the MOU website that I and NBB love to look at, he took nearly a fifth of all of the photos that have been put up on the front page.
I ran some stats on the submitted photos there:
He was the top photographer for the front page. He took 19% of the 6500 photos added to the front page (which goes back to 2007), and 95% of the photos for Cook County. Cook has also been the most-represented county because of his photos. 35 of his 1241 photos were outside of Cook County, but only 5 outside of the three Arrowhead counties. Pine Grosbeaks (41) were his most-frequently posted species. Chestnut-sided Warblers came in second with 37 and the Waxwings tied for third with 32 each. He posted 51 species at least ten times, and 36 species just once.
Hey AMR:
Bailey Tract, Sanibel Island
- Common Gallinule
- Anhinga
- White Ibis
- Sandhill Crane?
- Gulf Fritillary
- Brown Anole
Pretty sure the bird flying near us yesterday at the nature conservancy was a bald eagle, not an osprey like we were told later - the only white was on head and tail, none underneath. It was ~15 yards away taking off, and the sound of the wings was impressive
Also:
- Royal Tern
- Brown Pelican
- crow
- Mourning Dove
- gull
- some other fork-tailed gray bird
Fish Crow or American?
There are a good number of Gull species.
I agree with your Eagle over Osprey ID based on what you've said.
Scissor-tailed Flycatchers overwinter in the southern half of FL, otherwise probably Forster's Tern.
Loud Chatty Crow
I'm going to say Great Black-backed Gull.
Not a flycatcher or Forster's; no black on head. Closest coloration I can find are non-breeding common black-headed gull, but they weren't as large as a typical gull is
Did the loud chatty crow sound like the ones in MN and MO or did it sound different? (Different = Fish Crow, they might rarely show up in MO, but you wouldn't be used to the sound).
GBBG is a cool gull.
Black-headed gull isn't fork-tailed (but it is a very small gull).
Were not "caw caw" crows.
I may have been mistaking the black wingtips for tail.
Weird but the crows here in the city seem to congregate in large groups in mornings/evenings. You'd think they'd be more disperse so as to have more chances at food, but they must need the social engagement.
Particularly in winter., when they reverse-commute, congregating in huge mega-murders near downtowns in the evenings and spreading out in the mornings to find food, usually in related family groups. City crows in summer are more likely 1-2 year olds that aren't yet breeding... They move to the burbs or country to raise families.
Societal structure among Crows is really fascinating... Some sub-adults stay with their parents and help raise their younger siblings. Which doesn't actually help their parents' breeding success, but does help their own breeding success when they later "move out".
Fish Crows sound a lot more different than American Crows than they look.
Consider Bonaparte's Gull or Gull-billed Tern. Black-headed Gulls in North America generally show up only from NYC to Newfoundland.
On the right track now. They images seem to have more of a prominent black spot behind the eyes, whereas my picture only shows gray above/behind. I'll send you my pic, but not sure what the resolution will be when it gets to you
Heading up to St. Cloud for the hockey game. The Huskies hold 2nd place in the NCHC (despite the highest winning percentage in the conference) just 3 points behind Denver and are ranked 6th in the nation. They have a good shot at winning the conference, but they have to finish strong, especially in their 2 games at home against Denver at the end of the month.
And... another win for the Huskies! We should take in a game together sometime Twayn!
My daughters team just played Breck today. #2 in state versus #3. Lost 3-1, but boy was it a tight, well played game by both teams. Hopefully, we get a rematch at Excel Energy Center later this month.
Jimmy butler is just the best.
Haven’t paid any attention to tonight’s game to know what made you say that, but I agree. Not sure I’ve ever seen a player play with more of an ‘f you’ mentality all the time than him.
He's been phenomenal tonight. He also had a great sequence just before the end of the first half that involved a steal and some Buckets and he was 0.1 seconds away from hitting the first half buzzer beater.
Randy Moss is in the Hall of Fame on the first ballot. One the field, he was definitely deserving. I had wondered if his antics and off-the-field stuff might make some reluctant to vote him in this year, especially with Terrell Owens not getting in the previous 2 years.

This Black-throated Blue Warbler from 5-19-2008 was the first photo he submitted, and this Ruffed Grouse, from the day before he died was his last.

KAT is pretty close to the best too.
