Cool article in 1843 on the theories of how language developed in humans.
So far I like 1843, - I dropped my The Economist subscription as I was constantly falling behind - it's bi-monthly, the articles are by the same staff, but are richer and deeper and carry more of the material that I actually read in T.E.
And, I learned three ASL signs this morning: thank you, hello, and goodbye.
I don't get nearly as much value from 1843. I'm not that interested in fashion, and it does a lot of fashion stuff. But I do read the occasional article. I will look for this one.
Like Bo, I'm constantly falling behind on my Economist reading. But I'll never drop it. I love the Science and Tech quarterly, and usually manage to get through the key sections (the opening essay after the leaders, the US section, business, international, science, books, and the obit).
I've had a stack of Astronomy mags I'm trying to catch up on, not sure how I fell behind. I hate it when that happens
It better hit the Sun before Mars.
Wish I could find the article: it's actually less work to launch something out of the solar system than it is to launch it into the Sun.
Nice video; I think I was thinking of one of Bob Berman's monthly articles in Astronomy.
The Mrs., upon hearing a quote from Rand Paul this morning: "I wish we had RuPaul instead."
Can't believe nobody has shown love for this yet. I laffed
So, I'm trying to get caught up on the trade deadline deals in the NBA. I was reading this piece on SB Nation and have decided that the author really does not know shit.
Nance and Clarkson are solid pickups, too, though their ultimate success will depend on how well the Cavaliers coaching staff can integrate them into the system. Clarkson still can’t really shoot and his shot selection is poor, but he’s a better backup than Jose Calderon when LeBron James is off the floor. It’s worth trying, and Clarkson doesn’t have to crack the playoff rotation if that experiment isn’t effective.
Dude, (a) are you aware that Clarkson's career eFG is .491, that he's been right at 50 pct eFG this season and last, and that his True Shooting Pct (52.4 pct career, 53.8 pct season) are both pretty average for guards; and (b) have you ever actually WATCHED him play?
Clarkson is a dynamic offensive player who has been stuck on bad Lakers teams. He's got a lot of the good parts of Isaiah Thomas in him, but he lists at 6'5".
I just hope that Isaiah Thomas didn't spend a bunch of money thinking that a max contract was coming his way. He'll be on a one year deal next year in Sacto or something.
yea, he definitely had an outlier, career year last season. This year has easily been the worst of his career to date.
He's hurt, he's 29 and he's 5'7. Not a lot of dudes like that go on to be really successful in the NBA.
cc to Beau,
I updated the MLB history file to include the additional columns.
Ooh, I didn’t know that was there...
If you wanted runs scored/allowed per game plus BaseRuns runs scored/allowed per game for every team back to 1908, then you are in luck! Federal League included to make up for not having pre-1908.
Happy Birthday to me....
what's the world coming to, when a Citizen has to come to teh Cuppa to celebrate, instead of the wgom coming at you, bro? Happy birfday, Beau!
I now have two birthdays. October 1 and February 9, when Sean gave me the most glorious spreadsheet ever.
Are you saying sean is woefully late, or surprisingly early with your gift?
I think he is saying that he is Born Again, and that Sean is his savior.
In the beginning was the data, and it was without form. And Sean created a data structure and a model. And it was good.
You had me temporarily until you started mixing your Testaments.
The third (through 595th, they can't fit many seasons each) tablet with MLB season data were tragically lost over time.
Regarding strikes, three shall be the number of the counting, and the number of the counting shall be three.
Five is right out!

Re: Olympic Curling, mixed doubles.
It's surprisingly hard to find results.
Eight teams. Round-robin format (so each team plays 7 matches).
Top 4 teams from the Round-robin go to the semifinals.
Each team has played 4 matches
Four teams are 3-1:
Norway (Lost to "Russia"; beat Canada, Korea, Switzerland) Still to play China, USA, Finland
"Russia" (Lost to USA; beat Norway, China, Finland) Still to play Switzerland, Canada, Korea
Canada (Lost to Norway; beat China, USA, Finland) Still to play Russia, Switzerland, Korea
Switzerland (Lost to Norway; beat China, USA, Finland) Still to play Russia, Canada, Korea
Korea is 2-2 (Lost to China & Norway, beat USA & Finland) Still to play Russia, Canada, Switzerland
Two teams are 1-3:
China (Beat Korea; Lost to Canada, "Russia", Switzerland) Still to play USA, Finland, Norway
USA (Beat "Russia"; Lost to Canada, Switzerland, Korea) Still to play China, Finland, Norway
Finland is 0-4: (Lost to Canada, "Russia", Switzerland, and Korea) Still to play USA, China, Norway
First place: So Norway has beaten teams whose records not playing Norway are 8-1, and lost to a team that is 2-1 in other matches. They appear to be the best so far, and have the bottom 3 teams yet to play.
Second Place (3-way tie) Canada and Switzerland have played the same four teams: they've only beaten the bottom 3 teams, and have lost to Norway. Russia has beaten 2 of the bottom 3 teams but lost to the other, but also beat Norway. These three teams each play Korea and each other going forward.
Korea has beaten 2 of the bottom 3 teams but lost to the other. They also lost to Norway. They have the three "second-place" 3-1 teams yet to play.
I’m freakin over this US China match. I think US is going to lose. 2 throws left. 4-4.
US loses 4-5.
I had thought going in they were the US's best chance for curling gold. But yeah, that ain't happening.
US beat Norway?
Canada, "Russia" advance.
US, Finland, Korea eliminated.
Two spots left for three teams:
China plays Norway and Switzerland plays Russia.
I don't know tiebreakers. It's possible that if China beats Norway and Switzerland wins, China advances (face-to-face tiebreaker between the two teams finishing 4-3).
But if China wins and Switzerland loses, there will be 3 teams tied at 4-3 and Switzerland beat China who beat Norway who beat Switzerland.
If China loses, Norway and Switzerland advance.
The Revenge Game is living up to the hype.
I don't know why I watched all of that garbage.
I stopped by just to see your response... I am Jack’s underwhelmed limbic center.

There's a minutephysics video about it. I was thinking more because of its orbit being perturbed by Jupiter.
